View Full Version : When will John Cena turn heel?
The Franchise

We are a few days away from WrestleMania 26 which will mark five years since Cena won the WWE Title and became the "top guy" at WrestleMania 21. He has been a face for this entire time period and I'm pretty sure he was a face for well over a year before that, dating back to 2003. I remember people thinking he would turn in 2006 when the Cena hate was at its peak, but he didn't. He hasn't even teased a heel turn or anything since then either.
When do you think John Cena will turn heel? How big would this be? Biggest heel turn since Hogan in 96?
I think it's tough to pin point when because there has been no signs or rumors of them even considering this, but I don't think it will happen this year. Maybe not even next year. I wonder how Cena turning heel in 2012 and challenging Taker's streak at WrestleMania 28 would go -- Heel John Cena, the companies top man for almost a decade challenges Taker who tries to go 20-0 at WrestleMania. That would be a HUGE match and other than Austin/Hogan (not happening), Cena/Rock (probably not happening) and Michaels/Rock (again, probably not happening) that is the biggest match I can think of. I do think that if the WWE does it right this would be the biggest turn since Hogan especially since kids are the majority of Cena's fanbase. Austin's heel turn in 2001 was a shocker but he was still cheered and Rock's heel turn wasn't as big of a deal and short lived.
What do you think TPWW?

I think turning him heel is something they will do. I just think they haven't done it because there's not a viable top face. Once there's another huge babyface cash cow that they can count on to fill his spot while he does the heel thing, they will do it.
It's like turning Austin heel in 2001. They did it because they had The Rock.
Unfortunately, I don't see anyone on the horizon who is going to be a huge face and top guy in the company. If and when that person comes along, I'd expect Cena to finally turn heel.
Having Cena turn heel before, or during a Wrestlemania match with The Undertaker for the streak would be massive. Having Cena break Taker's streak would almost be worth it for that alone. In any event, they'd better be prepared to turn Cena (or anyone) heel upon snapping Taker's streak.

After he faces Undertaker at Wrestlemania 27 next year. Most likely Cena will lose and turn on the fans because of "lack of support" Guarantee.

I don't think it would be anywhere near as big as when Hogan turned heel. Hogan had been the biggest baby face for the span of almost 2 decades.
But I agree, Cena needs a change. A change to heel, a change of character. His current character is burnt the fuck out.

Cena will not turn heel until he is no longer drawing as a face. Just business-wise. WWF wasn't gonna turn Hogan heel. He was making too much money as a face. WCW brought him in and had established faces to draw on. And they knew the NWO in that era was gonna draw as heels with Hogan as the leader especially.
Unless WWE comes up with an amazing plan for Cena to still draw as much as he's drawing now as a heel, he will stay a face for a very, very, very long time.

I gotta agree with this. The WWE won't pull the trigger on a Cena heel turn until he dries up financially as a face -- or until there is some outside pressure from a company (which TNA is not yet providing) for them to do something drastic creatively.

With CENA filming in many movies and being the lead role, I don't see them turning him heel. Just look at the WWE turning DiBiase Face so he can have more of a chance in WWE Films.
I think CENA isn't much of a long term character until he gets a good heel push. I'm tired of CENA running down and saving the day... It's almost like a movie now.. so predictable.. He should screw over Christian or another fresh face n put them over and to give him a swift heel shift.

If you're looking for a time frame, I think The Franchise has a pretty good idea of how a Cena heel turn could be done. Cena wins either his second or third Royal Rumble in 2012, and chooses to challenge The Undertaker for either the WWE or World Heavyweight Championship. At this point in time, Taker will be 19-0 at WrestleMania. Cena talks about how much he respects The Undertaker and this his ultimate challenge.
Cue Cena alinging with Vince McMahon at WrestleMania XXVIII and screwing The Undertaker out of the big XX WrestleMania wins. Ultimate moment right there. All it would need is JR there screaming "BAH GAWD! Cena has struck a deal with the devil!" and Paul Heyman maniacally laughing his ass off.

I also like The Franchise idea of how to get Cena heel, but I really can't see it working out. Heck the whole idea of Cena having a heel turn has one thing standing in the way. His fans. I'm sure there are some out there who understand the importance behind Taker's streak, but so far I have yet to encounter them. And to be honest a lot of younger fans don't care about it. I also think to have him go over as a heel with those fans, he would have to do something drastic, and that just can't be done in this PG era. No matter who the writers put him up agents, his back history makes him the lesser of the two evils. So basically until Cena's fans grow up and get tired of him and his over coming the odds, Cena will be face.

I think back to the way Jericho went heel. It was brilliant. He told the truth, he called HBK out and fans hated him based on delivery. I don't know if Cena has the chops to pull THAT off, but I'd like to see a neat double switch. Maybe against Orton, where They let Orton become the true asshole anti Hero who doesn't pander to the fans, but will still kick anyones ass. I'd also like to see Vince use his HEEL MAKING MAGIC with a McCena allaiance.

Cena won't turn heel until the WWE gets away from the PG rating. Though who knows. I remember washing Bash At The Beach back in the day when Hogan turned heel and it was one of the biggest things for wrestling at the time. Cena going heel could be like that, it's just how they play it.

As horrible as this sounds, the best way to turn Cena heel right now would be to align him with the most over heel in the WWE right now... Vickie Guerrero!!!
They could maybe go down the CM Punk "I'm better than all of you" angle but it would have to be done on a bigger scale!

Hell fucking yes! I'd love to see him turn on HHH. Give him a championship run too. I know he doesn't need it or probably want it, but as a fan it would be nice to see.

Cena will turn heel when TNA starts pulling in 3s, Russo is banned from wrestling, Knobbs gets lipo and wins a beauty pageant, and Kelly Kelly and Maryse dyke it out live on RAW
kelly kelly and maryse................ WOW that would def. get some ratings

It's not a thing like Austin in 2001 because EVERYBODY cheered Austin. Not everybody cheers Cena. They'll turn Cena when these pre teens turn into cynical teenagers, so probably not until at the earliest 2012.

Realistically they can't turn him heel yet since no other face on RAW has been built up to be near his equal (similar to heels with Triple H during early RAW brand split). Although a tweener period might be possible as a test run for a potential heel turn and gives the WWE some time to build up a new mega-face.
Would be pretty amazing if they gave Cena a fanatical character similar to HBK with the Undertaker. Have him lose to Batista on Wrestlemania and then become fanatical about Batista being better than him or him believing he lost his "superman"-style confidence.

Cena doesn't need to be a heel per se, let him be a tweener. Give him his old attitude back and let him fight everyone. The kids will probably still love him, and the people who hate him now will love him. Basically do a mix of old cena, current Cena, and Austin.

EXCELLENT point and it bears worth quoting. If the WWE were going to turn Cena heel due to a lack of positive crowd reaction, they would have done it already (i.e. mid/late 2007....or even earlier). The WWE are going to 'milk' Cena for all he's worth.
I still contend that WHEN Cena turns heel, he will go down as one of the greatest heels of all-time. The problem with turning someone face/heel too quickly, is that it kills the wrestler's crowd reactions after awhile. Although I would have disagreed with this a few years ago, I actually think the WWE has done a wise thing in keeping Cena face.
