Music today sucks. I'm sorry, but it does. In fact, most music isn't even music. It's made on a computer. I dont think 50 cent, Christina Aguilera etc is music, it's trash. It's using a gimmick to sell.
I find it ironic that most pop/r&b artists do something controversial just when there latest album is about to be released:
Example 1: Janet Jackson. Unless I am mistaken she has recently released her new single, and a new album? Just two months ago she controversially exposed her breast at the Superbowl, causing all the media to pay attention to her, thus advertising her new stuff. Coincidence that her new record was set to come out?
Example 2: Britney Spears. Just about a month before releasing her new record, she shared a kiss with Madonna which was the talk of the town, and the media. Coincidence that her new record was set to come out?
Example 3: Christina Aguilera. Went through a controversial image change claiming "she wasn't being herself" in her previous album. Funny how then being a innocent popstar was the trend back then and now its dirty skank. In my opinion it's not being herself, she's just conforming to the latest trends.
Just think of a little preppy kid: "Oh my god! I've heard about what happened with him/her. I wonder what the cd is like!"
Bands like the Foo Fighters and Muse aren't conforming to what's popular because they truly love there music, and want to sell the music and not themselves.
How can people like Justin Timberlake and Avril Lavigne call themselves musicians when they don't even write their own songs (Avril only contributes slightly to her songs, she sits down with a guitarist), which leads to my next opinion.
Why in the world do we call these people talented. They dont write their own music. They only sing! Okay, you might say "Yeh man the voice is an instrument". Yeh, you could be right but if they have such good voices why on all their records do they need to be computerised with voice enhancers? Listen to Britney's Toxic. What the hell is that? These people sound ridiculous live when they actually do sing (a lot of them just lip sync and just do their dancing moves).
And when popstars write there own lyrics, I laugh my head off. Seriously, Jamelia's Superstar: "People always talk about eh oh eh oh eh oh". That eh oh bit is a cheap excuse for not finding a lyric to fit there. Man, that lyric is so deep!!!
I'm sick of people selling their sexuality and stuff and not their music!!!
Mock me all you want if you don't agree.
Your views?

Yeah, you're off base on the song writing part, although there are a lot of them who don't.
Anyway, you aren't the first to rant like this, and you certainly won't be the last. My advice: turn off your radio, browse indie label websites, download Soulseek (http://www.slsknet.org) and then support your favorite bands. :y:

I'm willing to bet that just about nothing justin timberlake has supposedly "written" is his own. I'm willing to bet it's more likely the label paying off a songwriter to come up with this shit, while justin sits in his room turning the vice on his balls tighter and tighter.
If he actually had any talent, I'd like to believe he'd have skipped the whole shitty boyband route first.

Yeah, and every song on Prince's albums is attributed to him.
Even his "Every Day Is A Winding Road" cover.
Vanilla Ice tried to say he wrote songs like "Ice Ice Baby" that included music and hooks such as "Under Pressure," "Play that Funky Music," and so on.
Look at Inner Circle's "Imagine," Which I think the Lennon Estate might attribute to John, but which they take credit for.
Just because you take credit on the liner notes doesn't mean you're not a plagarist, a thief, a liar, or have a ghost writer.

I see what Hawk means about artist conforming to the current trends. I thought it was bad when Christina Aguilera done it because I didn't think her earlier stuff was half bad compared to her current stuff. The worst example I've seen of artist changing their image is Jewel. Man I use to love to listen to that chick sing. She wrote her own songs and many of them came from poems that she has written. But now she's trying to be all Beyonce-like and popish. I thought she looked just fine before she changed herself to blend with the pop scene or to get more publicity or whatever. Jewel was a beautiful singer with an awesome voice but now she's pretty bad, especially that damn song "Intuition". Ugh. Blah!

Can you really blame people for wanting some exposure, or some more money from their work?
Watson
04-14-2004, 06:59 PM
No, I don't blame anybody at all for wanting more money or exposure. BUt I don't think someone should go against everything they previously believed in in order to get more money or publicity. I think a person should be themselves because that sells more records than anything else. Alot of people can tell when an artist is being fake and not being who they really are. Jewel is a good example of this. Just watch the "Intuition" video and look how out of place she looks. She's always had plenty of exposure. Hell she had just released "Am I Standing Still" a month or 2 before completely changing her image. I remember after the Christina Aguilera metamorphosis I thought to myself; no matter who changes there image for more "popstar" publicity, I knew Jewel would always keep it real. Boy was I wrong. What made Jewel entertaining was the fact that her music was entertaining to all age group. Now her music ("Intuition" for example) caters mainly to the same audience as Spears, Aguilera, Timberlake, Carter, etc. etc. All I'm saying is I never thought Jewel would be one to try to change who she is just to be more "pop-like". Regardless of publicity and money, Jewel was too good of an artist to completely change everything about her as an artist. Songs like "You Were Meant For Me" and "Foolish Games" were beautiful songs and now her single is played most in a women's shaver commerical. That just plain sucks. But it just goes to show that some people will do anything for publicity whether it be positive or negative. As long as they get it.
