Stu Hart might be bigger among hardcore wrestling fans, but George and Uecker are far bigger mainstream personalities. They obviously pick the televison inductees based on what the majority wants to see.
The people who care enough about Stu are either there, will buy the DVD, or find it on the internet.

I feel like JVC Kaboom Box should go in before FourFifty.

Jeritron

FourFifty has put more money in Vince's wallet than JVC Kaboom Box could ever dream of. I think his next ticket purchase will be the Lugz Boot of the Week

Yea they sold 80,000 tickets to see Ted Dibiase thank his family and tell road stories

Don't get me wrong, I loved Uecker at WrestleMania 3 and 4; if WWE insists on a 'Celebrity Wing' for the Hall of Fame, I'm happy he's going in (although, ahead of Mr T? Mike Tyson? Cyndi Lauper? Laurence Taylor? Mayweather? Ray Combs? Trump?)

But let's not lose perspective. The Celebrity wing is a mere token spot. Should anybody be bumped from the telecast of the annual wrestling Hall of Fame inductions, it should be the celebrity inductee.

I think they are predicting a George/Uecker/DiBiase telecast because of the order of proceedings tonight at the venue, but with no live webcast, they could film the evening completely out of order (to spread out the 'big names' and keep the live audience involved) and sort it in the edit before the airing.

Stu Hart might be bigger among hardcore wrestling fans, but George and Uecker are far bigger mainstream personalities.

Does Gorgeous George really have a higher mainstream status in 2010 than Stu Hart? I'd say they are fairly level.

Neither means much to a casual TV viewer anymore. If Bret Hart, one of wrestlings biggest stars of the 90s, can barely garner a reaction in 2010, why would George fare any better in recognition terms? Yes, I am aware of his impact in the early years of televison but most of his fans/viewers are probably long dead. Gorgeous George won't mean much to the average wrestling fan nor the average TV viewer in 2010. Stu Hart will at least hold some interest to the former.

I don't think so. I don't really know for sure since I wasn't around to follow that, and don't really know how I'd go about doing so now.
I've just seen stuff on youtube. I've read Jericho's book, which probably talks more about that but I can't remember.

Nowadays, I'd find it hilarious because of the retro-ness. At the time, it was probably more average.
Still, the shit Jericho does is legitimately entertaining. Getting scared by the stuffed bear? Hitting on the chick on the wall?
That's stuffs good.

Watching them ride bumper cars and bunjee jump, yea, if it weren't them and retro I'd probably be like "wow this is ridiculous"

Destroyer's segment, from PWInsider:

Lawler then introduced 'the only man here who can say he wrestled George three times' - The Destroyer Dick Beyer - who came out wearing his mask.

Destroyer said he is extremely excited and pleased to honor Gorgeous George with the WWE Hall of Fame. He said in college he watched George when George was big, made money and brought entertainment to pro wrestling.

Destroyer talked about George's Bobby Pins and wishes he had 2,000 to sell on Ebay. He told the story of wrestling George for the first time and learned that George could indeed wrestle.

Going forward, a Los Angeles promoter wanted to put a mask on Destroyer and he thought he was crazy. 16 months later the promoter wanted to take it off and Destroyer said 'not tonight'. This led to Destroyer's next story.

George owned a bar in the area and invited Destroyer to visit. The bar would have been the equivalent of the best sports bar today and had tons of photos of celebrities, but the bar was empty. George said he needed a payday and pitched Destroyer's mask against George's hair. Destroyer didn't want to lose his mask. George said not to worry and wanted to do all the pomp and circumstance. The promoter, Jules Strongow, agreed to do it and George submitted to a figure four. As they cut George's hair, Destroyer felt bad that he helped ruin the first image that brought entertainment to pro wrestling.

Destroyer said George was 'the living orchid' and had a mask for George's widow Betty. He said he was proud to have inducted George into the Hall of Fame.

To be fair, Stu's induction was posthumous. There's really no need to see two posthumous inductions on one show. George did more for the sports-entertainment business than Stu and that's why his induction was broadcast. The rest of the inductions on the show needed to be living.

It's debatable whether or not that's why GG's was shown and Stu's was not, and certainly they both contributed in very different ways, but really there is no arguing that George certainly did more for the business than Stu did (with no disrespect to Stu's numerous achievements as well).

I just think that we're talking two distinct and contrasting eras. The wrestling that George popularised on television all those years ago was very different to the era of sports entertainment - essentially what we all watch now - that Stu Hart contributed so much to as a promoter and trainer.

Yes, George's influence lives on as far as flamboyance, charisma and showmanship is concerned. That isn't to say that the business wouldn't have naturally evolved that way nonetheless, but that shouldn't belittle the pioneer's influence. However, for all the popularity that George gave the wrestling industry, for the foundations that he laid, the business got knocked back down, rebuilt, knocked down, rebuilt so many times.

I don't believe that modern TV audiences who tune into wrestling can really be attributed to Gorgeous George Wagner's influence from all those decades ago. To some degree because of his role in its existence, but not as a primary protagonist anymore.

But would sports entertainment even exist today without him? I think yes, but he was still the first.

At the same time, Stu Hart managed to remain an influencial force in the industry for decades in a variety of different ways: as a trailblazing promoter; as a tough guy wrestler; as a famed sadistic stretch artist and trainer of so many men who went on to be major stars and/or brilliant workers; as patriarch of (arguably) the most prolific and famous wrestling family of all time; even as a TV performer in many WWF angles in the 90s.

I say when you take all things into a modern context, they are far closer than you give them credit for.
