K this isn't a ufc vs. wwe argument, it's just something from the UFC that would work in the WWE.
Everyone percieves Big Jon as a badass, but they obv know he can't whoop the fighters asses or anything, but they also know he's hard as nails and would never fuck with him.
Wrestling needs a ref who is like "a new sheriff in town" and I don't mean a guy who stands up to the wrestlers in a story line sense. Just... if he's reffing a match, he holds down the fort. He'd know how to protect wrestlers if there were run ins/beat downs, he doesn't take soft bumps and doesn't get bullied by any of the wrestlers.
IMO a former wrestler would be great in that roll. I think it'd add to the psycology of a lot of matches... just knowing that with that guy in the ring there'll be no bullshit. And use him in lots of different situations so it doesn't seem too gimmicky.
I dunno maybe it wouldn't work given the traditions of wrestling, but it'd be pretty badass IMO.

lullllz, he's no Mario Yamasaki.
I made a thread a while ago about "personalities" for refs. Like, one would have specific ways to count and some would be more prone to allow certain things than others.
This would definitely fit into that premise.

Bump that thread.

It doesn't make sesne that all the refs are such vaginas who can't take anything. You'd think over the years they'd hire tough guys as refs kayfabe wise.

Yeah, I've wanted to see different referee personalities for a while, too. Not necessarily angles or anything, but just guys who are more strict about the rules, and will call for a DQ more often than others. A guy like Mike Chiota who has been around the block, for example, might be more willing to let the guys fight -- whereas John Cone, a newer referee who seems to have a more "sportsman" approach, might throw out a guy for punching too much in the corner.
Some new refs might be out to prove themselves, and some others might be more reluctant -- especially in there with the bigger stars. I think it would be a nice touch if Chad Patton was not used for Chris Jericho's matches, considering that Jericho at one stage beat him down and had a "match" with him under orders from Eric Bischoff. I know an announcer like Matt Striker would be more than up to the challenge of knowing each referee's personality and being able to bring that up when relevant in a match. And that's the sort of detail that made Jim Ross such a respected announcer.
As for the premise of the thread: A referee like that would be awesome. Not really a tough guy, but just a referee who would stand his ground and make sure nothing funny went down. I recall Earl Hebner almost being like that. I recall a few instances where Triple H disputed his decision, and Hebner would push him and lay down the law and Trips would be all "Shit! Whatever, man!"
I'd actually really love to see a former wrestler step in as a referee. Scott Armstrong was with the WWE for a while, but his in-ring stuff never really came up, and wasn't really relevant to the WWE audience. Someone like Finlay, Dean Malenko or even a guy like Ricky Steamboat, if they were up to it, could make brilliant referees. Even Jamie Noble could do it.

I'd be for this. Especially in the UFC, even though it's legit, you don't fuck with the refs. The ref says back off, you back the fuck off.

Noid I think the ref would have to be a tough guy. Earl Hebner was still a pussy regardless. Everyone knows BJM isn't a hardcore MMA fighter, but they also know he's a tough guy who can handle himself. So if say a retired wrestler like Jamie Knoble became a ref, or even a guy like Mike Rotundo who's a pretty big dude it would work. Wrestler's would know he's not the world champion, but if they got funny and there was a 3 on 1 beat down, Rotundo could actually protect the guy getting beaten down.

Like how cool would it be if you have a big mean ref who could actually take ref bumps... like someone would crash into them, and it's like "uh oh" but instead of being a big flaming pussy, he sells for a few secs, then shakes it off cuz he's a tough guy.

That would be awesome. Jamie Noble as a referee is now something I really want to see. He's not the biggest guy, and was never a main eventer; but much the way Matt Striker found his niche as an announcer, Noble could find his niche a referee who won't take crap because he's wearing a striped shirt and was one of the boys.
Dean Malenko, too. Just because Malenko is awesome, and I think he has the referee look. As a wrestler, while he never took off in the WWE, he had quite the successful career, and most of his gimmicks were about him being a cold, precise wrestler who knew what he was doing. Perfect for a referee.

and he'd be able to get up from bumps... well at least kayfabe wise he should be able to. Like if there was a ref bump with him and something shifty went down it'd have to be done super quick cuz he'd actually be able to recover. And he'd also be able to protect dudes from beat downs.

I would mark out if a wrestler was disputed one of Noble's calls, and he just screamed out "I'M JAMIE NOBLE, BOY!"

I'd mark out if refs actually protected the wrestlers when they were getting beaten down as opposed to getting thrown around like ragdoll bitches.
