So I put in my HBK DVD (the older one) tonight and decided to finally check out some of the matches on it. I've had it for like 9 months now and thought tonight was a great night to check out the matches. I watched one of my favs in Bulldog vs HBK on Saturday Night Main Event for the IC Belt. Love the turnbuckle spot.
Anyway, then I selected the Hart Foundaiton vs Rockers on SNME in 1990. 2/3 Falls for the Belts. I totally forgot this match was the one where the top rope broke and Vince scrapped the whole thing. I was wondering why the match had no commentary. DUH.
So I am watching the match and I never even realized that the top rope broke until I saw the officials fixing the rope after they get back from commercial after the 2nd fall. So the point of this thread is that Vince should of never scrapped this and the Rockers should have a place as Tag Team Champions in the history books.
As Bret Hart would say

So was it a work or did someone just complain about it?
Had to have been a work, otherwise they would have kept the belts on them. Or did it again.

no, it actually was not a work. The rope literally broke. Now I've heard Bret and Shawn say Vince was the one that edited the match out of he broadcast because he thought it sucked and didn't want to air a match where the rope broke.
But I've also heard they had to cut the match because NBC put some heat on them to cut the show from 90 minutes to an hour.

It's funny though, Bret always says he secretly thinks Niedhart broke the rope because the Harts were suppossed to be broken up soon after that. Jim would of been demoted to jobberville or out of a job, so he thinks Neidhart broke it so they wouldn't have to drop the titles and break up

Source? Truly do not recall hearing about this theory.

it's just a running joke Bret and Jim and some of the boys had. He's said it in a couple shoot interviews and when I attended NWA Fanfest in Charlotte in '05, he did a Q&A and joked about it there as well

But then why didn't they put the titles on the Rockers at another time?
There has to be another thing here, because if they were booked to win it makes no sense for them not to gain the titles later.

My mind is very shady here, but it has something to do with Jim being fired, which is why the dropping of the belts to The Rockers came about. After the top rope incident, while Vince was trying to figure if he should of should not let the match air, Jim and WWE reconciled, and Vince decided just to leave belts on the Hart Foundation.
Note: HBK says The Hart Foundation politic to get the belts back.

What year did HBK say that, though?

In his book, if you haven't read, I highly recommend it. Not just for HBK fans, but for wrestling fans as well, he was so involved in the '90s that everyone would enjoy it.

Yes, I answered his question in a very serious manner, as you can see by the CLEAR & CUT QUOTE below this.

Yeah, since there was no commentary on the match, me and a friend of mine did our own commentary. We would call every move, counter, and tags.

If that promo had be done today it would have oppened up with "I'd like to take this opportunity...". Anywho in all seriousness though even though I watched wrestling back in those days looking back I can't fathom how THe Rockers were never tag team champs. The were so damned over and the only ones to stay and faces throughout there whole run until of course they split and Janetty reformed the New Rockers ugh.
