Regarding Henry

They might all suck now. I can't be sure of this...

Are we talking 'sad' or 'harrowing/depressing'?

Because like I dunno, Big Fish is a sad film, so is Eternal Sunshine. Something like Requiem for a Dream though, that is fucking utterly nightmarish, not 'sad'.

Hurt Locker has some sad stuff in it.
Dr. Strangelove is pretty sad if you think about it.

Paths of Glory (another kubrik film)
Most comedies would be really sad if there weren't so much humour in them.

i.e. Harold and Kumar, drive all the fuck around to get a ffucking burger. how fucking sad, they get almost fucking killed by rednecks and shit

Don't know about great, but The Fall is definitely pretty good at least. Pan's Labyrinth is great and sad.

Shotgun Stories, Lars and The Real Girl, Welcome to Sarajevo, In The Valley of Elah, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, The Counterfeiters, Junebug, Brokeback Mountain, Shooting Dogs, No Man's Land, The Fountain.

All very good to great and quite sad.

'Uplifting sad' as opposed to 'soul destroying sad' I suppose

Those are are just unremittingly grim. Proper Eastern Europe "life is completely shit" stuff. A few tears squeezed their way out of my face when Lilya started dreaming about her dead little friend near the end, it was just an unbearable climax to an emotional battering of a film.

Never watching it again.
