But TNA is just getting ridiculous.

These are the "base" gimmicks I'm comparing them to, for the record.

Abyss = Eugene/David Sullivan
Orlando Jordan = Goldust
Jay Lethal = Savage
AJ Styles = Ric Flair
Tara = Jake Roberts
The Band = The nWo

Just seems ridiculous to me that I'm able to make direct comparisons to so many gimmicks.

So yeah, I dunno, discuss.

I would call Abyss a poor man's Kane more then Eugene or Sullivan but I think youre dead on with all the other comparisions. I really havent watched enough TNA to make any other ones because everytime I turn it on I feel like its something just like you said recycled that Ive seen before.

Jayman stole my line...

But all in all, wrestling has always repackaged stuff... It's putting a new and refreshing twist on the old gimmicks (i.e the wrestler's ability to sell his character to the audience) that keeps the machine going...

I mean shit if we're gonna compare apples to oranges... Cena is this generations Hogan... New and refreshing (to the kids, not me) twist on a huge, strong, good on the mic, 5 move wrestler... The next generation will have their Hogan/Cena type as well...

Early Abyss with James Mitchell as his daddy was definitely a rip off of Paul Bearer/ Kane/ Mankind.

The fact that the best they did for Lethal is him blatantly ripping off Savage is retarded. He's been doing it for 3 and a half years. At least have the real Macho Man appear once... damn... or at least a voice mail message they can play.

Hell they even have generic WCW music.

But what would you expect from the company that gave you Shark Boy and Curry Man?

you know all those guys on the right you can also compare gimmicks with others,
no-ones gimmick is unique and if they are unique then that means they are bland.

It's so blatant also. Like they know what they are doing and are damn proud of it. but thats just another turd on a pile of shit.

Hang on! You guys are suprised that the people responsible for killing WCW are rehashing the shit ideas from WCW and the ones what Russo claims credit for in the WWE?

I suppose Tara does do a bit reptilish behaviour but can you compare it straight to Jake?

Eugene/David Sullivan = George Steele
Goldust = Gorgeous George
Ric Flair = Buddy Rogers
The nWo = The Four Horsemen (without suits)

You're right wrestling does recycle a lot.

I'm not saying it isn't stupid to actually have the nWo but if you're going to say that you might as well say the following...

Brian Kendrick = The Brian Kendick
Pope D'Angelo Dinero = Elijah Burke
Desmond Wolfe = Nigel McGuinness
Dr. Stevie = Stevie Richards
Generation Me = The Young Bucks
Mr. Anderson = Mr. Kennedy
Sean Waltman = X-Pac
Team 3D = The Dudley Boyz

Yeah but this like the 3rd time TNA has bought back the NWO. One would think (especially TOVO) that it might be time to stop bringing the NWO back.

Big Show = Andre the Giant
Jack Swagger = Kurt Angle
Vladimir Kozlov = (Every "Russian" Wrestler in Wrestling history)
Drew McIntyre = Jeff Jarrett
Batista = The Ultimate Warrior
The Hart Dynasty = The Hart Foundation
Goldust = Gorgeous George
John Morrison = Shawn Michaels
Kane = The Undertaker

And I'm not even saying it's bad, I'm just saying that they all recycle stuff.

Yeah but those guys are continuing gimmicks they already had or developed as opposed to being assigned blatant rip off character traits/ personalities like a Jay Lethal or Abyss.

I know thats why I never disputed that Jay Lethal or Abyss. I was just saying the inclusion of The Band = nWo is silly since they are the exact same thing with the exact same people just called something different due to copyright. Even Xero agreed with me on that.

still think "The Band" is fucking retarded. It seriously just ruins everything all together. Why not Wolfpack or Wolfpak or Stink Finger. Anything other then "The Band"

Orlando Jordan = Goldust

Don't think comparing Jordan to Goldust is correct. The way TNA has been promoting Jordan makes him seem more like what Dustin Rhodes was in WCW with the whole "Seven" character that was too odd to explain.

Goldust is a character that might be weird or as a guy who's too crazy into Hollywood but the "Seven" was some weird pale-faced guy in a leather jacket talking about really odd stuff. Made it both odd and unconformable to watch similar to how odd and uncomfortable TNA is using Orlando Jordan on tv.

I could be wrong but didn't Seven only appear like once or twice before the shit canned that idea and he just cut a promo about how he was Dustin Rhodes and he doesn't need any stupid gimmicks?

It was the way WCW had promo and debut packages for him along with how Rhodes "acted" that made it both creepy and odd to watch on tv. He was smart to know when he had no chance at all with the character and ended it in the ring with the no gimmicks promo.

With Orlando Jordan, its not so much the issue of him being bi-curious but how weird TNA is showing him off on tv that makes it hard to take him serious as a wrestler and the scenes he's involved in.

Actually, John Morrison remids me more of a cross between Rick martel and Rick Rude. His workrate reminds me dearly of HBG, but only that way.

Hogan vs Flair wasn't good 10 years ago, defiantly not better now. Nasty Boys weren't good before, certainly not better now. (thankful gone). TNA seems to put on a good show occasionally, but the they suck it up for the next three weeks afterward. I am not saying that I don't watch and enjoy it, but it has a long way to go to be the better show on TV.

I dunno if I agree with this thread. I mean, fair points, I guess -- but yeah, wrestling has always recycled stuff. I'm not sure if I'd list some of those guys mentioned, either.

Abyss is very much like Eugene, I will grant you that. That makes me very sad. But AJ Styles' gimmick is that he is a sweet, ambitious kid who carried TNA on his back, but then suddenly gave ear to Ric Flair who is now manipulating him. Ric Flair is almost like the "Lady Macbeth" of AJ Styles' story right now -- tits and all. I personally LOVE that character for Styles -- because it's working both ways. AJ is young and naive enough to change himself for Flair; and Flair is self-centred and depressing enough to live vicariously through the younger Styles.

Jay Lethal ripping off Savage is kind of the whole point. It's a comedy gimmick. It needs to end, ASAP, but I think the tone of it kind of makes it very different to a "rip-off" beyond the point that it is obviously a rip-off, if that makes sense?

I'm yet to see Orlando Jordan's gimmick, but I've read about it. I guess the theatrics and sexual ambiguity of the character are Goldust-like, but there are still differences there. OJ is the guy who almost showcases his lifestyle to be different. It's a "bi-pride" gimmick. Goldust never really did that. You had no clue what the fuck was up with him. Was he messed up as a kid? Obviously. Was he gay, straight, bi, sane, insane? There was also the possibility that it was not who he really was, and it was all just a massive mind game. There are quite a few differences between the two.
