View Full Version : Greatest announcing in a match ever?

What do you feel are the greatest matches for announcing? As in, you look at that match (or matches), and it defines how a match should be called, at least in your opinion.

This isn't about the teams themselves but the actual matches and how the announcing meshes with them.

The first thing to spring to mind is Bobby Heenan at the 1992 Royal Rumble. It was great, but it isn't something that can happen all the time since The Brain had such a vested interest in Flair.

^Good one.

But for me, JR in the King of the Ring Hell in a Cell was amazing. He was very important to that entire match

Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura during the Hulk Hogan/Ultimate Warrior match at Mania 6.

Watched that again earlier today. Holy shit what a match, what a hot crowd, what an announcing job. Cannot believe how fucking hot the crowd was for that match. They were popping the roof off the building for a Greco-Roman Knucklelock/Test of Strength. A fucking test of strength.

Announcing was off the charts too.

Anytime JR yells for the match to be stopped or calls for some medical attention for one of the wrestlers is always excellent.

Benoit/HBK/HHH triple threat comes to mind.

I'm probably way too big of a mark for this match in general, but Matt Striker was amazing in the John Morrison/Evan Bourne match on Morrison's last night in ECW. It was probably an easy match to announce because all of the moves made so much sense, but he definitely added a lot to it.

I'm not sure if I have a concrete answer to this, but I can say with 100% certainty that it would involve J.R.

Just finished watching Royal Rumble 2004 on Jtv, and by god JR did a great number there!

Random insert I was watching the Royal Rumble 92 DVD and Monsoon said durring the Bushwackers entrance that they have been "licking and wacking there way to the top" :wtf:

You know, Heenan gets a lot of credit for the Heenan/Monsoon team, but Gorilla was defintiely pretty awesome himself.

Since WCW was the first promotion I started watching...I have to give props to Tony Schiavone. I know we all make fun of him, but he genuinely was really good for big moments and big matches.

I hate Joey Styles' voice. He was a good commentator in ECW but his voice is annoying as shit

Monsoon was great, with his calls of 'shots to the solar plexus' and that "x" wrestler could have tore his 'medial collateral ligament'. And of course, when Heenan would get on a roll, Monsoon was keep him line with a "WILL YOU STOP."

"WILL YOU STOP" is my absolute favorite.

Heenan/Monsoon for Royal Rumble 92 is maybe the best performance over a microphone of all time. Every other announcing is a distant second. Flair needed no help getting over, but between him winning the Rumble, winning the strap and having Heenan put him over for an hour all in one night, he was untouchable.

I actually watch wrestling more for the announcing than the product now.

granted I have a few wrestlers who I still like but I listen more than I watch.

I would say Austin's 1st title win at WrestleMania XIV against HBK since it ended with the memorable quote by Jim Ross.

Not a specific match but JR and Heyman's constant bickering from Wrestlemania X7 to Survivor Series was unbelievable. The Invasion may have been a disappointment but those two were phenomenal.

Another great JR moment was when New Age Outlaws pushed Cactus Jack/Terry Funk off the stage in a dumpster. JR's announcing when that happened was epic.

Royal Rumble '92 is undoubtedly the foremost example; first thing I thought of when I saw the thread.

To be honest though, pretty much any match announced by Monsoon/Heenan, Monsoon/Ventura, Vince/Ventura, Vince/Heenan, Vince/Lawler, JR/Heyman or JR/Lawler pre-1999.

The announcing can make a good match great or a bad match bearable. When you have a talented and entertaining announce team, the entire show benefits.

Gordon Solie and good ol' JR's commentary during the Ric Flair and Terry Funk match at Clash of the Champions: NY Knockout

that was really great plus Solie uttered the now famous line...two words, five letters...I Quit

Greatest announcing moment ever: Rey Mysterio vs Psicosis in ECW when Joey Styles yelled Oh my God in spanish.
