I hope I don't offend anyone with this post and if you do respond please be respectful. I'm just curious about something.

Has there ever been a minority (black, asian, hispanic, african, Samoan, Canadian, etc...) in wrestling who in some way didn't play a race based character at least once in their careers in a major fed. like WWF/E or WCW? I've tried my damndest to think of one and all I could come up with was Coco B. Ware, then I noticed his name was Coco. What's funny is most of the guys that get over big (Faarooq in APA/ Rock/ even Viscera(Mable) got over big once they dropped the stereotype bs. Does WWE screw up in this regard by immediately typcasting minority wrestlers in terms of their character, ring attire, and storylines?

Exceptions:
Devon
Dancing Dave Batista
Shelton (although Shelton's mama made it iffy)
Boogeyman

Singles:
Rock was NOD as were Faarooq, D-Lo, Mark Henry (sexual chocolate), and Papa Shango.
Bad News Allen hated white people.
Kamala.
Tajiri. Funaki.
Kofi's shitty Jamaican accent despite not being Jamaican
R Truth
Eddie
Rey

Tag Teams:
"Harlem Heat."
New Jack & Mustafa
Cryme Tyme (enough said)

I thought about Atlas and Johnson but then found out it was Rocky "Soulman Johnson." and Tony Atlas was "Black Superman" in World Class (were they the predecessor to WCW?) and Simba in WWF. I'll give you Maven, although dude looked like the generic create a wrestler on the late 90's WWF video games where they all came out tan.

world class was a texas promotion run by the von erichs. wcw was georgia based and used to be the nwa, just a coincidence in the name

World Class and GWF (Global Wrestling Federation) were absorbed into the USWA (IIRC) before going out of business.

also, Ahmed was tied to the Nation of Domination's hip for the vast majority of his run, either as an adversary or for that cup of coffee as a member.

Tony Atlas, God damn was he ever in a stereotype gimmick Saba Simba.

is creepy gay weirdo a black stereotype?

Xero

It's a gay stereotype, and gays are minorities.

A guy sucking off three guys at the same time could not say truthfully that they're a bigger flamer than Jordan is.

Actually, it was World Class and the CWA (Continental Wrestling Association, based in Memphis, TN) that absored into the USWA in 1989. The GWF wouldn't be around until June 1991.

I think Maven is the only black guy who the announcers never went off and talked about "How he grew up on the streets and learned how to fight".

Well, it would have been hard to when they showed him visiting his white mom fighting cancer in the hospital, and him talking about how she inspired and motivated him to always work hard/etc.

yeah Maven was half black wasn't he? Same with the Rock, but Samoan is a minority too I suppose.

To be fair, a fat Japanese guy portraying a sumo wrestler is pretty stereotypical.

Fortunately he was Samoan, so he was portraying a stereotype for a different minority, which I don't think counts? :-\
