View Full Version : Legit Heat: Lawler and Striker

Providence Peep

There is said to be legit heat between Jerry Lawler and Matt Striker. Striker reportedly has a reputation for being an elitist, which is rubbing people the wrong way, as Michael Cole isn't a fan of Striker's either. There have been times that Striker wanted to prepare for a show with his broadcast partners but he irritates them so much that they go out of their way to avoid him until showtime. (LordsofPain)

So, what do you guys think of this?

I think Cole probably says "Vintage Striker" anytime he annoys him and King (2x the annoyance for Lawler)

Lawler used to be good a decade ago :(

But yeah honestly Striker > those two. Still rough around the edges, but he def knows how to call a wrasslin match.

The problem with Lawler and Cole and BOTH of them are corporate shills. There should only be one corporate shill and the other guy should be invested into what's going on, and too legit for corporate. See Rogan and Goldberg in the UFC. Matt Striker would do well with one of the two because he's invester in the product while the other two are simply kissasses. Though having a kissass is necesarry to shill products and promotions and so forth, but only one is enough.

Yeah Lawler and Cole come off as such morons. Like they just don't feed off of one another. If you gave Lawler, Striker to work with, I feel there could be that JR/Paul Heyman chemistry where you can tell they hate one another but it's magic.

But yeah, you can tell both Cole and Lawler are force fed lines and they just have no idea how to sound like they care at all, and I don't fully blame them. Whereas Striker is extremely eloquent/smart/apparently an elitist and clearly knows how to work around being fed bullshit.

Either way, he SOUNDS like he gives a shit, Lawler and Cole don't even sound like they watch the product.

It'd be kind of awesome if they had Jerry Lawler kayfabe unabashedly despise Bret Hart like he used to. Honestly there was nothing more awesome than listening to Lawler calling a Bret Hart match in the early-mid 90s.

Kurtis Stryker in the WWE = ratings.

But on topic, I love Matt Striker's commentary. The dude actually cares, and invests so much love and attention to everything he says. He did his absolute best to make people care about Shad Gaspard vs. JTG at Extreme Rules. The way he mentioned the symbolism of JTG and Shad being tethered together in a match after being partners for four years was brilliant. I love the way he can actually think on the spot to, and talk about the mortality of The Undertaker after someone makes him bleed a little.

Michael Cole is good as a heel on NXT, but besides that, I can do without him. Jerry Lawler is completely redundant. Jim Ross and Matt Striker would make an amazing commentary duo, for the record. JR with his traditonal, "BAH GAWD!" style and Striker with a calmer, more intelligent approach.

I actually noticed this at Extreme Rules during the Cena-Batista match. Striker said some funny smart ass comment to Cole, to which Cole responds "How about you just call the match?" which lead to an awkward silence. It felt legit, and now seems legit.

Maybe Striker is an elitist, and maybe he's not -- but I think the part that is really stinging Cole & King is just how much better Striker is than them.

Emperor Smeat

Seems like Lawler and Cole are really believing that RAW is the flagship/best brand and felt Striker being from a "lower" brand shouldn't be able to give out orders or improvise stuff because he doesn't have the top brand seniority as announcer.

J.R. didn't have this type of "superiority" thinking when he moved to Smackdown based on reports from him and others (even though he resisted at first since it meant new travel plans and work days).

Ol Dirty Dastard
04-30-2010, 12:43 AM
the reason JR probably didn't have that complex is cuz he enjoys calling wrestling matches so he most likely had fun doing so on Smackdown. Cole and Lawler are both capable of calling a match, but that's not what commentating RAW is about. It's about shilling crap, and talking about the main storylines.

Interesting. There has been a number of times recently where I have noticed some awkward moments between Cole/Striker where King usually stays silent. I think a few at Wrestlemania 26

Honestly Kurtis Stryker was going in this contest over his head I mean a god of lighting, A Hell spawn ninja and EVERYBODY BUT YOU THROWS A GODDAMN FIREBALL the guns and hand grenades were a mercy. God forbid he should run low on ammo.

On a serious note though Matt Striker can be a little obnoxious but that'll go in time I think, I'm glad theres someone on the team who tries as opposed to seeming dispassionate like king seems to be or is just a straightup corp toolbag like Cole,Plus anybody who annoys Cole as much as he annoys me is the goods as far as I'm concerned.

Personally, I liked JR and King the best, that was one of my favorite teams along with Gorilla and Ventura. Striker is alright in his knowledge of the business but he has been bothering me lately. Who boos when the Hart Dynasty finally wins the tag titles? Bret Hart was in no way involved with them actually winning the match. He took Miz's feet off the ropes but did nothing else. He is trying way too hard to be the heel announcer and he definitely does come off as elitist.

Educate me.

When Ventura guest hosted, they gave him pages with the wrestlers names and a picture of them, so he knew who was who.

On one of the "special" Raws that had people from all three brands, Lawyer was given pages with the names of the wrestlers and the pictures of them, because he was totally unfamiliar with the wrestlers on Smackdown and ECW.

That's what the news report claimed at least.

I actually felt it then for the first time, and in numerous spots. In fact, it was the very first time I've recognized what many might call "bad announcing". And it wasn't Striker's fault; Cole kept negating EVERYTHING he said. Any given bit of info Striker put out there, especially toward the latter half of the show, Cole would say "Not even that, but this!" It was like watching a guy purposefully bomb at improv comedy.
