In the first case, I think it's to patently show how ridiculous the original song was. So yeah, I would probably be offended if I were Fergie and Friends. Then again, I think I'd be offended if I wrote that song in the first place, simply by default.

In the second case:

Reznor said that when Rubin first asked if Cash could cover his song, he was "flattered" but worried that "the idea sounded a bit gimmicky." He became a fan of Cash's version, however, once he saw the music video.

“I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure."

Hallelujiah by Leonard Cohen is one of the most covered songs going, so I highly doubt he takes offense to people thinking one of them is better than his. It's bound to happen, but it's all subjective anyways.
I personally think Leonard Cohen's is the shit, but I'm also a sucker for the real deal a lot of the time. Sometimes the fact that someone created a song is part of what I "get off" to

Bob Dylan's songs are always brought up as songs that are better when covered by ______. This is more than likely due to the fact that he's an incredible song writer but not a very good singer.
Before anyone freaks out at that, I love Bob Dylan. He's just not what you would traditionally considered a great performer.

I do like Cash's Hurt better then NIN, but I was never a NIN fan. I do love the Cash video as well. It's really good.

With Hallelujah, I didn't realize it was covered so much. Who did the original? I've always been of fan of the Rufus Wainwright version. That's a song I love to play on piano and he did it on piano.


My favorite that I can think of right now is Am I Wrong by Brand New. They covered the Love Spit Love song

There are always people who are like "I didn't even know that was a cover." You will find that a lot with Limp Bizkit's "Behind Blue Eyes," people don't know it was by The Who. That Mad World song was all over the Gears of War commercial and Donnie Darko so probably that one too. Through this thread I have learned that hitting the right arrow key during a youtube video will make it skip ahead.

Fucking hell. Listen, the beauty of humankind is we can all like different things (which doesn't happen these days with the youth eating up the similar sounding Auto-Tuned RnB crap out there). But oh my god I actually fucking am shocked someone would say this.

I guess there's someone out there who prefers DJ Sammy's version of Bryan Adams' "Heaven". All that "stripped" stuff is cos people just can't compete with the originals and tends to try to tug on the heart strings of the fools who fall in.

TFF > Gary Jules.

But I know you're not the only one, I just fucking hope I'm not the only one who thinks what I think, cos I do believe the world would be wrong. TFF are amazing and their production detail for the time is devastating spot on.

I had someone try to tell me Britney's version of "I love Rock and Roll" was better than Joan Jett's. Only time I ever wanted to punch a ten year old girl in the mouth. I didn't though.

Somebody else tried to tell me Alien Ant Farm's Smooth Criminal was better than Michael's. He lives in a group home. I can see why.

Meat Loaf always performs Jim Steinmans songs better then anyone else I think. There is actually a group that performed that song back in the late 80s called Pandoras Box (Celines was a cover in itself) and it's got a few other songs that Meat re-used for his later albums and his versions are for me far better then the originals.
