View Full Version : Is the PG era starting to loosen up a bit?

On Raw, Edge stated that he was the Rated R Superstar and he was going to do whatever he wanted, even though everything is supposed to be PG now. Now, it's not like anything was actually done in his segment that wasn't PG, but this is the first time I remember them actually mentioning their limitations on air. Couple that with WWE commenting that maybe they could do more to draw in non-prime demographic fans (or something thereabouts) at the shareholder's meeting, and I think they may start pushing the envelope just a bit more.
Both Smackdown and Raw were great after the draft, and I see some potential for some more greatness in the near future. Do you think Edge's comment was ushering in a new 'edge', so to speak? Or do you think he was just saying that because his nickname is rating related?

i had high hopes when edge was talking about that on raw, and they were talking about 'the era of controversy" how controversial can they be in PG? and then jericho said 'jackass'

@Anybody Thrilla: Frisky Dingo is the greatest show ever... but you probably already know that.
Until Linda loses or her campaign managers feel she has done enough to distance herself from WWE, I don't think we'll see it. They may let seasoned vets like Edge and Jericho tiptoe the line, but most superstars will probably be kept in check. If she wins, she's seated for six years so they may loosen the reigns then, but Vince has no real incentive to change the format. As much as we bitch we still watch and discuss the product and TNA is not a legit threat and won't be for awhile.

It has been mentioned on tv once before by Striker. At least concerning blood, he did say that a new rule was matches had to be stopped if there is blood loss. But PG ending would be great.

Edge is rebelling in the safe way most of the angsty white kids on MTV do. Or Youtube, if MTV is too dated. he said he was going to do what he wanted, which evidently means trying to have a second emotion and failing. Otherwise, though, expect him to talk big and change nothing. No way is WWE giving up the kiddie market who makes up most of their merch sales.

I love how it's always Linda's fault and her ambitions that are to blame, though this has been going on for years.

Years... Riiiight.
2006: Edge & Lita "live sex" on raw, Trish and Mickey have their hot storyline, Cryme Tyme auctions Lita's stuff off under a "ho" sale... Not a pg year.
2007: Sill have bra and panties matches on Raw; Vince blows himself up; WWE has a bastard child storyline that goes into 2008.
2008: Maria is the last diva to pose for Playboy before WWE discontinues the promotional deal; Snoop Dogg hosts the Playboy Bunny Lumberjack match at Wrestlemania
2009: January 28, 2009 Linda is nominated to the Board of Education...
Yep they've been PG for years. Funny how on WWE.com's list of specialty matches they don't display or recognize bra and panties matches yet give us such gems as blindfold and inferno matches. The WWE divas not dressing like whores anymore also has nothing to do with Linda trying to establish herself in the Republican party.

We had Otron punting a 60 year old man in the head during this "PG" era. They will always have 1 or 2 crazy angles a year, that is just how it is.

I like how Edge was talking about being Rated-R and doing what he wants and all that...
Then Wayne Brady comes out and he acts all amazed and chummy. Was expecting him to spear Brady while the announcers go "NO!!! EDGE CANNOT BE CONTROLLED! HE IS RATED-R!!"
But instead Edge just acted all goofy with Brady and Orton was the one who was "outside the boundaries"

Yes, the only thing that's changed in the last five years is that Edge isn't doing "live sex" anymore and there are no Playboy shoots.

Once Linda McMahon wins her election in November, then it'll change.
The Rock has been hinting at taking over the show in the late summer so it'll be interesting to see how it all works out.

It's a matter of semantics and characterizations. Look at the diva photo shoots in 07-08 compared to today. You don't have divas wrestling half naked in vats of jello and gravy anymore. No more blood on t.v. etc... Never mind the fact that the actual parental guidelines rating system didn't give Raw an actual pg rating until 2008.
Anyone who looks at the product in 2006- 2007 and says that is the same as what's on tv today is just being a pretentious prick.

And yet the 2006 product is still notably tamer than even a few years before, which is my point.
So...ummm...Yeah. You guys done bitching about me, or are you going to pretend 2006 was as Raw as, say, 2000? This didn't happen overnight and started WELL before Linda had Senate ambitions. but it's an easy target for people to blame, so it's what people focus on.

It would be nice if they push the buttons of the "PG" limit, but Vince is all about the money and like the people above said, PG makes more money. Hopefully they'll change it, but I doubt it.

Yeah, tbh I don't see it changing much until today's target WWE audience (12 and under) grow up. So we're looking at potentially 6 or so more years (possibly even longer) of this "PG Era" in WWE. And ya know what, as long as they're not trying to "push the PG envelope" too often (once in a while would be nice, but only used sparingly), I'm OK with that.

Just to set things straight, I'm not saying that I hate the PG era or anything like that. I quite enjoy the product as it is at this point in time. The biggest thing that got me thinking about this was how it was loosely addressed in the shareholders meeting, coupled with Edge commenting on it on air. This is the most attention that the PG rating has gotten from anyone outside of the IWC ever.
I don't even think they've done anything too differently YET, but I think there's a chance that they just may. It's certainly too early to tell either way. However, I do feel that steps are indeed being made AWAY from the 'PG audience', so to speak.
Kids are the primary target audience. I will not dispute that. However, I think that they are realizing now that there is a different section of the audience that isn't comprised of kids, and I really do feel that they are doing some things to appease that portion of the audience as well....which I see as a potentially good thing.

The biggest tragedy of the PG era is how stifled the talent is with the direction of their characters. Imagine Punk's straight edge heel character in the attitude era. Dude would be amazing. He's got grandma's slapping him now and all he's doing is cutting midcarders hair. He could have pulled some amazing promos during that time. Orton would have been golden too. Hell even Miz.
