View Full Version : The Keyboard/Mouse is awful for games.

I bought GTA III for the PC and the controls seem unnecessarily difficult and/or awkward. Everythings spread out instead of being bunched togethor for ease of use. What the hell is the JNUMLK key or whatever it was called?
I have to move the mouse to turn around on foot but it also makes the camera swing wildly upwards, giving me a close up of Claudes ankles. I'm dreading any mission that needs me to drive a car at speed while firing a gun out the window behind me. I know I can play with a gamepad but I don't have one and, knowing the way PC games work, I'm betting only a specific gamepad is actually compatible for GTA III.
Outside of RTS games, the PC is useless for gaming despite what elitest PC tech heads say. Console controllers have every button you could ever need for the game right in your hand. A keyboard & mouse turns a game into a chore for me.
Anyone here share my opinions or think Keyboard/Mouse > Console controller

Get the Xbox 360 adapter and a wireless controller. Make your gaming a whole lot easier. Granted it works on a good chunk of games, there's some out there you gotta use the keyboard/mouse.
Keyboard and mouse work much better for FPS (and RTS) mainly for the accuracy.
Otherwise, including a game like GTA 3 onward, I'd rather go with a controller for most games, which is easily done with an adapter as ClockShot said. But you're more saying Keyboard/Mouse is worse than Controllers, not computers are worse than consoles.
And considering my computer makes the game usually look better than the console counter part, if I had the choice and there weren't features missing I'd much rather go PC.

I got my old wired xbox 360 controller hooked up to my PC and it works just fine

What? PC gaming is retardedly easy. Almost every game that isn't a RTS or TBS has all the vital keys around W,A,S,D and are easy as hell to reach.

It all depends on the game you're playing really. Take RTS games for example. They are amazing on a PC, but absolute shit on a console.

I don't understand.
Keyboard/mouse is better for certain genres and for everything else, you can use a controller from any console... ever with the right adaptor.
I've got an N64, Gamecube, 360 and arcade stick all for use on my PC ready to go. For sheer flexibility, PC > Console. If I could keep up with GFX card trends, there's very little I'd use my 360 for.

Right on the money.
I never dared to play any other type of game with my PC. There has been some exceptions such as RPGS but besides for that, there is not much of a point to try.

Oh, and any game released after Windows 95 can support any gamepad. Hell, most modern games come with 0-configuration 360 joypad support out of the box.

I had seen 360 controllers used for PC gaming. I don't play games on PC enough to buy an adapter unless they are really cheap.

Yeah RTS games are better on the PC. I only hav 4 or 5 PC games. All but one are RTS games.
I admit the thread title was bad. I was going out the door when I typed it so I typed in whatever sounded like it fit the thread. I was out the door seconds after posting it. I've fixed it now.

You take that baaaaaaaaaack!

I thought they were easy to but GTA III has a bunch of keys on the far left and a bunch of keys on the right of the keyboard and I have to use the mouse to move the camera/turn Claude around.

Yeah, RTS are naturally better on PC. Xero mentioned FPS' but I've never tried a PC shooter before.

So am I in a way. I'm surprised I had this many replies. When Clockshot suggested getting an adapter, I thought the thread would just slide off the page.

PC shooters require a bit more skill than their console counterparts to be quite honest Drakul.

Don't loop all pc games into your rant just because one game had a shitty control scheme.

Once I got used to it I always thought keyboard and mouse controls were far superior.

I have the 360 adapter. I only use it for emulation of console games.
Then again my PC gaming is limited to Diablo 2, Warcraft 2 & 3, Starcraft and Age of Mythology.

I tried changing the control scheme and it's getting a little easier. I still don't like the mouse movement controlling the camera and being the way to turn corners on foot but I can't see an option to change that. I'd get an adapter but it wouldn't be for a while.
I really want Sims 3 and/or Spore but I'm put off by the DRM I think it's called. Apparantly, it's some software EA games put into your PC that you can't get rid of and it's supposed to monitor you. Plus the whole "You can only install this game X amount of times" thing.
Sims 3 is coming for the 360 soon so I'm hoping it's a near perfect port. I can dream.
Seeing my PC can handle GTA III on full settings without a hitch has made me want to install my other games. Sim City 3000, Populous: The Beginning, Black & White, Theme Hospital & Command & Conquer: Red Alert. RTS's all over the place.
I got Dues Ex with my first PC about 9 years ago. Stupid considering the PC it came with couldn't play the game. I'd give it a try now because I've heard good things but I've no clue where it went. I can't find my copy of the Lost Vikings, either.

Have you played the other console versions of The Sims? In all likelyhood, it will be nothing like the PC version.
Also, Sims 3 only has a disc-present check. It doesn't have the internet required/limited install thing that Spore did.

Yeah the other console Sim ports were bare bones mutant off-spring.
I'm wanting to blame the consoles of the time for not being as powerful/flexible as the PC was. Now the PS3 and 360 are powerful enough to handle a game like Sims 3 as it was on the PC. Right?

Not really sure, I think it was just dumbed down for a console audience as a PC with a lower spec than the original XBox could run Sims 2, let alone the original Sims.
Maybe EA learned their lesson, but those old console Sims still sold pretty good so it still maybe bastardised.

Maybe they'll spill info on the 360 port at E3. Then we'll know if it's a straight port or a messed up bare minimum game.
Now that I know the PC version is just disc-present and not like Spore, I might hunt down a copy and give it a go.

I dunno what people see in the sims. I "play" life every day and I have the high score. Gimme some fantasy.

Dunno, I've not died yet in a pool of my own piss because some evil god made me drink espresso constantly in a room with no doors and then haunt my wife and child.
That's kinda fun.

The guy in the screenshots reminds me of Charles Martinet. I'm not sure why.
Yahtzee has opinions on Sims 3:

I couldn't imagine playing most of those with a controller.
But I do hate using wasd to move. More specifically, I hate pretty much any keyboard movement configuration. I could probably get used to it, but I have no interest in doing so.
Otherwise, I prefer k/m over controllers, but I don't bother with my PC for gaming much anyway, so me.

I bought mine here:

£11.49 and direct download so doesn't even need the disc check.
