Supreme Court ruling states NFL teams are separate entities
by Griffin McElroy { 5 hours ago }

According to USA Today, a recent Supreme Court ruling has denied the National Football League antitrust law protections, stating that its 32 constituent teams must be considered separate entities. The court reversed the dismissal of a suit filed against the league by American Needle, Inc., a company which was locked out of the football-themed hatmaking business after the NFL penned a 10-year exclusivity agreement with Reebok. Gee, that sounds awfully familiar.

The case of American Needle v. NFL has returned to the lower courts, where a decision in favor of the former could drastically change the face of the NFL's licensing business. In short, if the district courts find the league in violation of antitrust laws, it could repeal exclusivity agreements like the one with Reebok -- or, likely more pertinent to your interests, the one with EA Sports, which brought a hasty end to the NFL2K series. We'll keep an eye out for further developments in this lawsuit.

Why does the title bug me? Wouldn't it be "End to NFL Exclusivity"? Madden can go wherever he wants.

Fuck yeah it would be awesome if NFL2k came back. Or Sony made a NFL game as good as thier MLB the Show games.

If NFL2k came back and was still awesome like 2k5, and they have free online and not that code bullshit that EA has, then Madden would be in some trouble.

Do you buy Madden used?

I doubt it would end the current agreement EA has with the NFL but nothing would be stopping a big name team like a Dallas Cowboys from agreeing to be in a different football game while also being in Madden.

It would be sort of similar to how the Pro Evolution series signs up certain teams while EA owns most of the individual league licenses (ex. EPL and teams like Liverpool).

Forget the 2k series - this could lead to the return of NFL-approved games like Tecmo, Blitz, and even something like Brian Urlacher's Smashball.

2k isn't innocent of cornering the market on sports games either. There has never been a decent baseball game on the Xbox360. I have to hear Ps3 fans gloat over the fact that they have the Show and we don't. 2KSports had to bribe fans to play that game this year with the million dollar contest.

Every baseball video game fan that I know has been counting the years since 2005 to the year 2012 when that contract expires. Triple Play/MVP Baseball forever!

I don't get why NFL teams are considered separate but Major League Baseball teams arent.

If Madden Exclusivity ends, MLB2k needs to end! Give me MLB: The Show or MVP Baseball!

1. Buy a Neo-Geo

2. Buy Baseball Stars 2 and Super Baseball 2020

3. Gloat over people who bought "The Show" as you now have better games, even though you probably spent more than the total cost of a PS3 to get all that.
