View Full Version : Is it just me or is Kofi REALLY over?

Like, the first big pop I remember was at last years draft in Atlanta, and I knew he got over feuding with Orton, then it died down a small amount with the de-push after the feud. When he got eliminated at the Rumble by Cena, people booed, then when Cena got the Codebreaker right after, people cheered that. The crowd reaction to him at Wrestlemania was great when he got on the ladders as "stilts." When he "won" the IC belt on Smackdown after McIntyre took it back, there was definitely crowd involvement there (helps that him and Christian both put on a good match, of course) but the reaction at Over The Limit when he came out, let alone when he won (which shocked the hell outta me that he went over Drew) is enough for me to ask you guys opinion.
Dude seems like a real company guy, a buddy of mine works in the E and says that Kofi is always doing everything he can with the company, events, etc. He's like a younger John Cena in THAT aspect at least. He's respected in the locker room by all the vets, and Triple H loves the guy.
We have Swagger as a champ which was a HUGE surprise after him not even being on TV that much the weeks leading up so, my question is, assuming Michael Hayes isn't a factor, when will they give him a run with the WHC? Does he need to change his character slightly? Heel turn (which fixes EVERYTHING in the IWC)? New music? Be more serious as a character? Because that Orton feud definitely helped with that. What do you guys think?

He just needs to be given some big wins and he could easily move to the upper card.

He just needs to be given a gimmick other than being black and he could easily move to the upper card.

New Music and more of what he did with Orton would def push him to the next level... Before the Orton incident at MSG I was 50/50 with Kofi... He's def got the in ring ability... and now he's showing better mic skills... Get him some big wins like brother said above and he's on his way...

ya cos he beat a very over heel and it was unexpected, hes good but im not blown away by any pops hes gotten since MSG
I think he deserves more credit than that. I think the reaction was more HIM being over and winning, not Drew being over as a heel and losing, what with them chanting his name and whatnot after the fact.
If Show had beaten Swagger, another over-heel (Who some may argue is getting X-pac heat) then the reaction wouldn't nearly have been the same.

Kofi got an interesting match out of McIntyre, so Kofi's cool with me.

Kofi Kingston is definitely over, but I haven't noticed that "white-hot" undeniably warranting a push heat yet. Let him stew for a while and help the IC Division since he just won the title there. Let him work some fantastic matches against Dolph Ziggler and Cody Rhodes for a while, and then eventually move him into a program with CM Punk. I feel that could be the feud that really elevates him to that main event status. The two have history, and CM Punk is as over as anything as a heel. I imagine the ring work would be great, too.
I don't feel that anything really needs to change about Kofi. He's dropped the accent, he's gotten serious. His theme music is catchy and the pyro entrance works. He's also changed up his colour scheme in the ring to be less "tropical." It's just about time and patience with him, I think.

Kofi is one of the most solid talents on the roster. I have liked Kofi since day one but he has upped his game since his feud with Orton. MSG was a defining moment as the crowd was cheering for him 100% against Orton and he has ability/mic skills/personality. Watching him and Drew was great as they are two of my personal favorites on the entire roster.

I agree. He can work the IC route and help build up the heelish Ziggler, Rhodes, etc. The way I look at it, it can be similar to The Rock; give him an ACTUAL buildup that we can believe in. It's been so long since we had a huge buildup, because we all know the E likes to blow their load prematurely all the damn time. A feud with Punk would DEFINITELY take him to the upper card, especially with some clean victories at some PPV's. I'm willing to put money on it that if the E uses him right, with the right feud, he'll have the belt by Wrestlemania.
IMO, his undeniable "white-hot" was his victory at Over The Limit. Seriously, that crowd reaction to his win pretty much out-popped almost everything that night.

He's dropped that dumbass Jamacian accent. You have to take him seriously now that he's not saying Mon all the goddam time. Kofi works as a face. He doesn't need a heel turn, he shouldnt be a tweener. He has shown 'determination' (face equivalent of a mean streak). So I like the brother. Stamp of approval from K7

I enjoyed the Jamacian character. It gave him a underdog charisma...
I also enjoyed him standing up to Orton...
I'm not sure if Smackdown is the right place for him since Kane's always jobbing everyone and Chavo & Hornswoggle run around interfering in matches but eh w/e.

I went to a house show this past Saturday, and Kofi's reaction was probably the third best face reaction behind Cena and Orton. Take from that what you will.

Doesn't Kofi need a name change now that he's not from Jamacia?
Kofi Kingston... Kingston is where all the violence is erupting in Jamacia.
If he still had his character, he could go off all this current media hype to the fighting there and maybe go help out.. Give WWE some media attention.
He could atleast score some points to the crowd about it.
Wheres Sean Kingston when you need him, They could be a tag team of brothers.

I don't think a name change would work though, given that he's such a well-established character in WWE. I do think he could benefit from a new theme song though.

His music is essential to him right now. You could argue he has the most recognizable and unique entrance theme on the roster.

Kofi's real name is Kofi Sarkodie-Mensah. Sweet name. I wouldn't mind it if he used his Jamaican accent, or otherwise in an intense sort of mock-promo sort of way. The dude is pretty talented on the mic. He's also not far into his career. Considering when he started wrestling, he's really quite polished. I like his "unorthodox" style. He pulls off that "come out of nowhere" mayhem which makes him hard to prepare for as an opponent.
Also, since his program with Randy Orton, I could actually one day buy him as a heel. He can talk, he's got intensity, and his "I don't take this shit" character is very versatile.

Must admit I like the guy he has a lot of energy and enthusiasm and is a very good wrestler to boot. With that said though I think if he were to be pushed to the next level they will have to make some minor creative changes to him. He's really over with the younger anduiences so a heel turn is a really bad idea plus to be honest I don't think he could pull it off unless he goes gangster or something.

While I don't think Heel Kofi would work with the universe, I think he has the talent to pull off a heel gimmick. He wouldn't have to go 'gansta'. He would just have to stop smiling, and deliver some heat generating promos. He has the talent to separate from the stereotypical black heel personas. Why not give Kofi an arrogant persona? He could just come out in some suits, talk about being 'self made' in the WWE and basically turn his back on the fans? The 'catering to you all hasn't gotten me the Title' schtick would be delightful.

Or maybe...he could do a stint where he say's he's done with WWE and walks out. Then to really sell the gimmick he never returns.

For the record: Right now I would not turn Kofi heel. He's doing perfectly fine as a face, and the longer he remains such, the more impactful a heel turn will be. I could imagine him doing so very much like how The Rock first won his first WWE Championship. Kofi turning heel out of nowhere could one day shake the "WWE Universe" (ugh) to its very core. As a mid-carder, I don't think it's needed.
MVP is in much more need of a heel turn, I think. Bring back the suits for him, please.

I agree and thats kinda what I was bringin up before. Minus the undoubtedly huge charisma, Kofi reminds me a LOT of the Rock, career-wise. Build him up, have him feud over the IC strap, then BAM World Title and Heel Turn. It'd be a thing of beauty. My buddy went to a house show the other day and Kofi came out, and dude said he outpopped Cena by far, no bullshit.

That's awesome. Something about Kofi's career reminds me of The Rock, too. I think it's how he went from a happy-go-lucky babyface that no one really invested in to a character with some reservoirs of depth.
