So, I have had this thing for a while. My wife and I regularly play Left 4 Dead and L4D2 and I recently played the Ghostbusters game. We have come to the decision that we want to get Xbox live for the Netflix option and I have some questions as well as some general stuff.
1. What's the best wireless router to use?
2. Is there a thrifty plan for Live I should check out?
3. What's the point of downloading a game to my hard-drive if I need the CD to play it?
4. When I connected an mp3 player to my xbox it wouldn't recognize any of the songs on it, why?
5. Does anyone still play L4D online?

1. What's the best wireless router to use?
We use Linkseys but I'm not sure what the best option is. Our connection works well anyway. Just make sure it's wired, though if you just wanna stream movies you can go the wireless route (requires an XB360 device).
2. Is there a thrifty plan for Live I should check out?
Usually it's 50$ a year, or 20$ for three months, or 7$ a month. If you could spare it go the 50$ option so you don't have to deal with it. There are deals online where you can get subscriptions for cheaper as well.
3. What's the point of downloading a game to my hard-drive if I need the CD to play it?
It saves the XB360 loading stress with the game installed, however you need the disc to show you own it. Can't have kids installing games across their friend's 'Boxes. In some cases it speeds up loading time.
4. When I connected an mp3 player to my xbox it wouldn't recognize any of the songs on it, why?
The tracks may be in an unrecognized format. There is an update on XBL that could fix this (a media update), so most likely it's that.

Yes. Hell yes.

get on eBay, or wherever, and get a Linksys WRT54G v.4
its an older model, but should be found on the cheap. Once you snag one of those, flash it with a customer firmware like Tomato or DDWRT (i suggest Tomato), and it basically turns a $30-40 router into a $100 router.
And if you buy a year membership on Amazon or buy.com, you can usually snag it up for $35-40 instead of $50.
Installing the firmware is as easy and going into the router, clicking 'update firmware', and selecting the customer firmware.

1. Go wired. But if you don't, go with avacado's rec.
2. Live can be found frequently on sale for as little as thirty. Look at places like Amazon, buy.com, and such for deals. I'm paid up through 2013 right now.
3. XBox 360s are noisy, especially earlier ones. The install means the disc spins up once, and only once. Less wear on the DVD drive and less jet engine sounds. Most games will have at least slightly reduced loading times. Some will have massively reduced loading times. Unfortunately, disc verification is necessary.
4. Because you touch yourself at...Oh, nevermind. Some types of MP3 players can't be recognised. I think you need a model that can be used in "disk mode" or whatever, so some models, like (I think) an ipod nano or similar model, doesn't work. Kal may be right about the formats, though if you're playing MP3s that ain't it.
5. No clue.

Thanks everybody! I ended up getting a wired linksys, the cm100. Now I'm just dealing with an MTU issue, it's telling me that I don't have enough mtu. I'm talking to a tech rep from linksys now after determining that comcast is not at fault.
Appreciated.

I was using the cable modem and not a router. I ended up having to call comcast twice, once to add my modem into their inventory and permit it to play and a second time to reset my first modem as they fucked it up somehow.
If you ever have the same issue as me with the same set-up, try switching the DNS to manual and then back to automatic/powering everything off. Seems like the issue was on the ISP's side though.
Good to go now.

dont use the modem for anything other than the router. If you switch devices connected to the modem the ISP is usually a bitch about it. If you have a router, i suggest keeping your modem dedicated to it.

 my WRT54GL
Running tomato on it, and it is fantastic.
A friend of mine has had NAT type issues and internet problems in general for a LONG time. He had tried 2 routers before and had horrible luck with both. Did all the things tech guys ran him through.. port forwarding, static IPs, etc..
Well he bought a WRT54GL and I flashed it to tomato yesterday, set up a couple things and fixed his NAT type problems and had his router running securely in under 20 minutes. One of the best routers ever.
