Someone enlighten me, please. I've tried for ten plus years to try and get into him (pause) but I just can't. His matches seem repetitive to me. What do you guys like about him?
**EDIT. (The "Pause" denotes a "no homo" if you guys even know the significance of that.)

He's someone people can relate to. He wears a mask and has a wife who's twice as tall as he is.

He's running on rep. And yeah his matches are very formulaic now, but every prominent face has a routine that he goes through in almost every match nowadays.

i feel you, I've never liked him, he's always been a channel changer.
There wasn't anything very formulaic about the matches he had with Jericho, Morrison and Ziggler last year.
I don't know how you can watch his awesome WCW work and not at least appreciate the guy.

I appreciate Rey's work in WCW... Don't really much care for him these last few years though.

Even though he was much better in WCW, he is still one of the better works in WWE.

Rey is one of the best wrestlers alive today, or ever. Have you ever seen him live? He is amazingly fun to watch in a match with anybody. I love Rey, he has a great character and HE HAS A MASK!

:y: Character wise, he can get real dull, depending on who he's working with. The Punk feud that brought his family into it added a dimension of vulnerability to his character, as he always seems to be the daring underdog, and that changed for a bit leading into Mania.
But his in ring work is also above par. He's still one of the best performers on the roster and can have an atleast watchable match with just baout anybody, even at his age with the laundry list of knee injuries he's sustained.
Also, the mask is the perfect marketing tool. Gets him over with the kiddies, and moves a shit ton of merchandise. And as long as that happens, Mysterio's going to be on the television transitioning in and out of the main event till he decides to retire or loses popularity, the latter which he has never done.

The mask has alot to do with it and the fact that he's a good worker as others have stated. I personally find Rey entertaining he makes the perfect face IMO because he's the kind of guy you just can't help but cheer for. I also really like the fact that he really interacts with his fans during his entrance something very few others including superman Cena don't do.

And don't let the fact that most of his current fanbase wasn't alive back then stop that from sounding like a valid theory as to his popularity.

Rey vs Undertaker could be the most exciting WM match ever. Not because of the drama behind it, but because of the potential that one false move from Rey could end the Undertaker's streak completely unintentionally.

Yeah yeah we get it. The knee brace is bad, but really does it bother you to see blood? You know its bad ass.
Rey vs Taker would be acceptable IMO for a WM Streak match.

...Rey has so much appeal, that not only does he put "Company Man/Legend" Undertaker out of action for a while, breaking his face, basically...but he also not only is put into the Fatal 4Way...HE TAKES UNDERTAKER'S PLACE.
That Brace is the ultimate finisher CM Punk should count himself lucky that all he got was a split open forehead
I liked Rey ok in WCW he started to annoy me when he lost the mask but I was a way bigger fan of Psicosis anyway, nowadays I would change the channel were he not feuding with Punk

He broke his face? Fuck I thought it was his sternum... What's an orbital bone?

I guess he broke his eye socket or some shit.
In most combat sports everyone has A Kryptonite someone who for one reason or another has their number, in Boxing Muhmmad Ali was Joe Fraziers prison bitch/ punching bag likewise Frazier was constantly stomped by George Foreman
In Wrestling though scripted it would seem that Rey is the Kryptonite of The Undertaker

I still like him. He's not my favourite or anything, but he can put on some fantastic matches. His fued with Chris Jericho early last year was awesome, and his fued with CM Punk has been pretty good.
The only problem I have with Rey is that his character is stale. He may not have 'heel' written all over him due to his size, but if he'd join the S.E.S, playing a reluctant heel will at least give his character the spark it needs.

Rey's character is slightly annoying, but he's being marketed to kids. They all love him.
As many people have pointed out, he has been class in-ring for a while. His match with Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam, any of his matches with Chris Jericho, or his match on Smackdown vs. John Morrison for the Intercontinental title could all have at least been considered MOTY candidates. The Punk feud is hot shit. I even remember him having an awesome match with Mike Knox last year.
What I don't understand is all of this Rey hatred. I feel like I haven't really been noticing it until recently when he injured the Undertaker. Are you guys really going to completely turn on the guy just because of an accident? I was actually just watching a match with him vs. Eddie Guerrero at Halloween Havoc from some year or another...amazing stuff. He deserves to be able to rest on laurels like those...but he's not. He's still churning out great work on a consistent basis. The Undertaker can't even claim that much.
Half the folk still aren't over his title run, what chance does he stand if he gave Taker a boo-boo?

The thing about Mysterio is that while he's been good on his 7-8 year run in the WWE, albeit injury prone, he's also been the EXACT same character for 7-8 years. Also, because of the way he's marketed to kids, that will NEVER change before he retires, much the same way I'm sure Cena will stay the way he is for some time to come. He's stale. We're all over it, and I think that's the crux of what the Rey hate is really all about.
I still enjoy Mysterio matches but I can't remember the last time I didn't root for the heel he was facing over him.

I've thought about this.
A good way to make Mysterio a heel would be to have him lose a match clean to a face, but then blame it on his size disadvantage. Have him demand a rematch where things were more 'fair' where the opponent would have to wrestle on his his knees, wear a blind fold, tie an arm behind his bag, etc. He can keep the schtick up for a while, constantly using his physical shortcomings to his advantage and portraying himself as a 'victim'.
Jordan
06-02-2010, 01:01 PM
That is a great idea Thrilla.
Rammsteinmad
06-02-2010, 01:01 PM
He needs to join the S.E.S!!!
Maybe Punk can win a match eventually that says Rey has to join them, at first he's reluctant kinda stringing along, then about a month or two into it, Punk can be fueding with someone who Rey is trying to help, Rey can then attack whoever he's helping and say he's realised the S.E.S. really do look out for each other etc... And that he's better off with them.
I'm not much of a booker, just throwing an idea out there.
Favre4Ever
06-02-2010, 01:04 PM
Another one would be maybe the mask angle in reverse. Maybe he loses one of these "if he loses he has to take off his mask" matches that seemingly happen once a year, and instead of doing it he like refuses and it becomes a big thing.
I dunno how long a heel turn could really last though, there are far too many little kids at those shows.

Rey Mysterio is a good wrestler but he has become very formula based for quite some time now. He is capable of damn good matches (see: WCW, the Smackdown 6 era, the Eddie Guerrero feud in 2005)

You don't even have to go back that far. How about Over The Limit?
The Franchise
06-02-2010, 02:32 PM
Haven't seen that one, was it pretty good? Punk and Rey given enough time I've got no doubt it would be a solid match. I think it's Rey's character that is more of an issue than him in the ring. While he has gotten repetitive, if you think about most baby faces have a basic formula for typical RAW or Smackdown matches and then pull out all the stops on PPVs. People hate on guys like Rey and Cena but never said anything bad about Stone Cold or The Rock for example, despite them having pretty much the same match every week. Could it be a double standard?

That would be good. Another idea I liked was having him play the role Spike Dudley did in 2004 or so. Have him be the leader of a mini stable with two other big guys. Rey can call the shots and is the little dickhead that everyone wants to beat the hell out of but he is always protected by two big goons (ala the Dudley Boys protected Spike).
A little off topic, but anyone remember the rumor in early 2006 of Rey turning heel and bullying Kurt Angle?
