Isn't "Good Emo Band" a contradiction in terms?

The proper definition of it is "emotional hardcore", but the meaning's become massively distorted lately. So now it applies to any old band who are vaguelly punkish, melodic and sing about getting dumped or something...

The bands that are considered to be "emo" are the only bands that put emotion into their music. Depression and teenage love are the only real emotions.
Elements is stupid. He listens to metal. The only thing they do is scream about how much they hate the world.

My advice is to ditch the emo crap and get the real deal.
Download some No Use For a Name, Lagwagon, 10 Foot Pole, NOFX etc.

Pop Punk?
Okily Dokily.
Prolly not gonna be my cup o tea then. About the only "punK" acts I listen to are the Ataris (Have So Long Astoria), Taking Back Sunday (They had a couple songs that caught my ear), and the Dropkick Murphys (Blackout:  )

Oh yeah, and since "emo" is supposed to be "punk," Coheed and Cambria, since they're supposed to be "emo."
Though one thing I must confess, I've never once actually LISTENED to the lyrics of their album...I might very well hate them if I did.

To be fair, 99% of what's being called "Punk" or "Punk Rock" isn't punk either.
Since Punk was coined for bands like the VU, and Punk Rock originated with bands like the Sex Pistols or Ramones...
Sorry, couldn't think of any.
Kane Knight

Actually, both Bowie and the Beatles have solid claims to punk as well. :D

Somehow I dont see bands that play that style of music surviving in modern culture, don't get me wrong, I'm a big Sex Pistols, Ramones, The Clash fan etc.
I feel the the fast paced high energy punk that took its place in the early - mid 90's was a suitable replacement for the "punk" phrase. This new Emo crap isn't.

Well, the new stuff still ties back to the 70s and 80s.
The high energy punk of today is based in large part on New Wave. See also: Cars, the; Ocasek, Ric. It's also got a lot to do with the Beach Boys. Theory student whose father is a music historian, so I've got a lot of shit in my head.
I've never seen the Clash as Punk. That's just me (And a lot of other people).
Still, I'll take the Post-Punk of the Neighborhoods or Mission of Burma, or the power punk the Neighborhoods later did, combined with Naked Raygun, anyday.

I've always seen the Clash as punk, must just be me.
I found the Cars slightly more poppy than Punk.
I still  Iggy Pop though!

Question: How much of the Car's stuff have you heard?

Quite a lot.
My Dad is a big fan.
Kane Knight
04-19-2004, 01:02 AM
Hmmmm...
I dunno...It's all subject to opinion, of course, but I mostly get that reaction from people who have mostly heard likle "Drive" and "Just what I needed" and "My Best Friend's Girl."
But since they were part of what brought the punk/new wave sound into the mainstream, it makessense you'd define 'em as pop.
Bad Company
04-19-2004, 01:05 AM
Yeah, I dont define them as pop as such. But they do have a poppy sound to them.
Have you heard much Ultravox? Not really Punk, but good music!
Kane Knight
04-19-2004, 01:13 AM
Tell me about this Ultravox...
Kane Knight
04-19-2004, 01:14 AM
Yeah, there are different shades of pop. A lot of people are poppy without being pop.
the Cars had some REALLY poppy stuff. Some of it is even good. Some of it's crap. I hate Drive, for example. Moving in Stereo...
Bad Company

Ultravox was "new wave"
Kind of like electro rock music... Pretty weird, but cool!
