E3 2010: Xbox 360 Slims Down Today
The new Xbox 360 redesign is slimmer, quieter, and here now.
by Levi Buchanan
At its E3 press conference today, Microsoft announced the brand-new Xbox 360 redesign. Smaller and quieter, the new Xbox 360 comes with built-in WiFi and a 250 GB hard drive. The wait for the new Xbox 360 is short, too. Very short. The new Xbox 360 ships today in North America and will be in retail later this week. The machine costs $299 USD, the same price as the existing 250 GB model. In Australia, it will release on 1st July for $449 AUD and for $499 NZD on 9th July in New Zealand.
The new Xbox 360 is primarily glossy black. There appears to be more vents on it for heat dispersion. The front of the machine has a sharper indent than the current hourglass design.

<!--- end image div -->
As if that was not enough of a surprise, Microsoft also announced that anybody at the theater for the press conference would get their mittens on a new Xbox 360 even sooner: Microsoft is shipping them a new machine immediately. (As you can imagine, the IGN War Room was suddenly full of many frowny-faces.)

That being said, that's all I have to say on the matter.

So, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Nick and I were at an unboxing event for the newly announced Xbox 360 today, and it was there that he committed a sin that will never be forgiven. Well, it wasn't a sin as much as it was a total waste of a perfectly fine copy of Alan Wake.
You see, despite the warning on the front of the new Xbox 360, Nick picked up the system to move it from horizontal to vertical position while the game was booting. The resulting sound was close to that of starting a garbage disposal with a fork in it. After hearing the horrendous noise, Microsoft people immediately ran to our area with concerned faces. "Yeah, you can't do that," we were told. As you'll see in the video, to Nick's embarrassment, Microsoft's Bill Beldan pointed out the prominent warning sticker right there on the system's face, which clearly explained that you can't move the system when a game is in use.
Fail.
----------------
Sure, there was a sticker on the damn thing saying not to move it, but it isn't like he was tossing it around the room. They're planning on having gesticulating children play Kinect anywhere near this thing? Some games are going to be getting destroyed, people. Looks like everyone needs to be really, really careful around their new 360s while they are on or their games are going to get wrecked.

i hate the fact they're taking out MU support. After charging through the nose for what was the only way to store files you wanted to move (saves and the like, I know there was already USB support for music and shit) for most of the life of the console so far, it's kind of irritating that they're now making them completely obsolete.
On the other hand, I no longer use my MU anyway, so it's more annoying than in any way disruptive.
but hey, no RRoD. :D

Don't understand taking away the red lights, as they had a legit purpose.
PS3 has yellow.
Wii has red (I think)
Now the 360 has nothing to differentiate between "fucked up" and "just fine"? Only real reason is so people can't call it the RRoD anymore because it's bad for PR or whatever.
Unless of course they just put the light somewhere else so we could have a new name :D

That ring of light was apparently expensive initially, dunno if they saved cost getting rid of the red light.

Ohh pfft, it was more complicated than that :p
For certain errors certain quadrants would light up red or whatever. Not sure exactly how it works, only problems I had with my 360 were the time I accidentally knocked the AV cables out and the lights came on and when it died. And even then, no lights or anything. Turned on, but everything was fucked up and games would play for like a minute before turning green and freezing
On the other hand, I once left my PS3 on for 3 days on accident, and not only did I not even notice, it wasn't even warm when I found out ;)

How the Hell was it not even warm? You can fry an egg on my PS3, even when it's idle. I mean, it handles heat better than the 360, no doubt, considering the YLOD happens less than half as often, but Jesus, it only does everything...Including serving as a hot plate.

That's how mine ended up on for a few days, I remember the cats running over it and hearing it beep on and then thinking "I'll turn it off in a minute", but then I forgot. And due to the way I had everything set up (everything on this big coffee table in the living room, TV on the front half, PS3/360/Wii behind the TV) I just didn't notice it until I tried to turn it on a few days later
