View Full Version : Everytime CM Punk loses, I feel like the WWE is promoting drug use.

Not really, but it is kind of funny when you think about it all. CM Punk says that he's better than everybody because he leads a clean lifestyle and then he is constantly jobbing to those that apparently don't lead a clean lifestyle. It's as if WWE is subtly saying that you can lead an abusive lifestyle and still come out on top.

DISCUSS.

Yeah. Punk is kind of a paradox. The announcers always have to work double-time to explain to the viewing audience that his message is a good one, but the way he chooses to present it is EVIL and wrong.

Probably better Grisham does that over Cole.

I think the biggest example of this was that brief feud Punk had with R-Truth before he formed SES, where he cut a long promo presenting the audience with random addictive substances and then threw them into a wastebasket, and then Truth came out and dumped the wastebasket full of booze and pills over his head.

What was even more interesting is that you'd almost have to think that out of all the WWE superstars, R-Truth is probably the most likely to use said substances.

Why? Because he's black?

Well, to be fair to Favre4Ever, isn't part of R-Truth's gimmick that he did time in prison?

For drugs?

Well, that we don't know. HOW CONVENIENT.

Yeah, didn't Truth just live on the streets?

Though TNA was pretty much prison, so...

Either way, it fits.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I understand how they're trying to play this Straight Edge thing off, like it isn't the message itself, it's how the message is conveyed. It's still pretty confusing. I mean from a child's perspective doesn't it kind of paint the picture of "CM Punk is drug and alcohol free and he isn't much better than anybody else" ?

1) It would seem to me that it does paint that kind of a picture, but on the other hand most of the kids, especially these days, know what's up with the WWE and that it's entertainment...

2) Truth is from West Charlotte, NC... Not the nicest part of town for sure... We have our fair share of crime in Charlotte like anywhere else... But it's not like the streets of L.A>, NYC, Chicago, etc... Not by far...

What?

Well, K-Kwik was fired for getting caught with drugs in Canadia back when he was gettin' rowdy with the other guy from the New Age Outlaws.

Still not as funny as Jeff Hardy v Punk, but hey. The real irony's probably more in Punk's actual lifestyle.

I totally forgot about that Canada incident...

I STILL REMEMBER.

I remember Punk appearing on ECW last year and pretty much being called a "nerd" and a "loser" by the faces (I think Tiffany even implied that he was subhuman) in backstage segments because he doesnt drink or do drugs.

Coincidentally, I didn't know it was a repeat until you told me. So your post actually served a purpose.

I guess it was bound to happen eventually, even if by accident.

I think about that sometimes. They do try and say that it is the message, but Punk is one of the few adult concepts you really see on WWE television. His whole character is designed to irritate people who do have vices and such. Even more sympathetic than Punk, I think, is Luke Gallows. The man overcame addiction and is sticking by the guy who helped him, and that makes him a bad dude? He didn't even beat up Jesse when they were on the same roster, despite Slam Master J allowing him to live that lifestyle.

The downside to the straight edge shtick is that it seems the faces always say the same thing: "People should choose" or "I like the message, but I don't like the messenger." I'd like to see a different style of Punk feud. Maybe someone can try and work out what his addiction actually was, and why he is so anal about the Straight Edge lifestyle? Or someone can promote a Straight Edge lifestyle without shoving it down people's throats, and Punk can be all "Don't do that! That's my thing!"
