View Full Version : Favourite ever "Beat 'em up"

I know the genre is all but dead nowadays and I'm still storing enough juice in my balls to completely blow my load if Streets of Rage ever gets made on a "current gen" system. It's all there. 3 previous games, great reaction to them all, and a great name "Streets Of Rage Trilogy" (where all characters from the past are in etc.)

But if you are young enough to remember side scrolling classics like Golden Axe / Final Fight etc. What was your fave??

I honestly believe Tekken Force was the last great hope for this. On Tekken 3 it was fucking amazing.

BTW, mine, of course, is Streets Of Rage.

Double Dragon II and TMNT Arcade game.

Never owned or played River City Ransom as a kid but since playing the ROM and Virtual Console version, that's my current favorite of this generation.

The genre is not dead, it's just in 3D now. God of War, Dante's Inferno etc.

My favorites are probably Turtles in Time and Power Rangers Featuring Ivan Ooze the Movie the Game.

Yeah, 3rd person action games have taken this shit over.

To me beat em ups will always involve walking to the right and kicking the shit out of 13 identical guys tho.

Sunset Riders? Or was that the shoot 'em up game?

Perhaps it was that. Was that played with a gun? The last I played it was on a friend's MAME cabinet, so I played it with the joystick and buttons and it felt natural that way.

I liked the Simpsons arcade game, and all the Battletoads and Golden Axe games. Maximum Carnage was pretty sweet, too.

Seperation Anxiety was better just because of co-op with Venom

But Maximum Carnage had a red cartridge.

Jeritron
06-27-2010, 02:31 PM
At what point did the novelty of a colored cartridge wear off? I feel as though it was still awesome as far as the early years of N64. Halfway through 64's run it seemed like they started making tons of colored cartridges and it lost all meaning.
That was part of the short lived post-modernist cartridge movement

Hornicane
06-27-2010, 02:38 PM
I loved that Earthworm Jim 3d came in a yellow cartridge for no discernible reason.

Bible Adventures - blue cart, though it was not licensed by Nintendo
NES Zelda and sequel - gold cart
Maximum Carnage - red cart
Killer Instinct - black cart
Donkey Kong 64 - yellow Cart
Zelda on N64 - gold cart

I feel like I am missing some.

Hornicane
06-27-2010, 02:44 PM
Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, LeafGreen, FireRed, Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald were all in appropriate colored cartridges. Perhaps the best use of the colored cartridge, IMO.

Jeritron
06-27-2010, 02:46 PM
There were a ton of colored ones on N64. Even minor games had them. Turok 2, Wrestlemania 2000, No Mercy had black cartridges.
Hydro Thunder and a couple other games had blue cartridges. There were a few reds. Spiderman had a red one I believe.
Army Men and others had green.

The TMNT Arcade titles and the X-Men/Simpsons titles were awesome.

Gotta give props to Dynasty Warriors 3 and Saumrai Warriors 2. which both allow an epic amount of ass-kicking.

Jeritron

I think Konami pretty much had the market cornered.

I'm not sure who made the Punisher and Aliens vs Predator beat em ups, but the depth in those were incredible. The weapons definitely added a whole new dimension to those.
They seemed to be made by the same company, but I'm not sure.
