Chris Benoit

Quite literally insane, and quite literally one of the best technical wrestlers ever. He was even a horseman at one point, and one that I got behind even though the horseman thing had been rehashed. He had a lot of heart and determination that showed when he was in the ring. I still wonder why the WWE didn't do a stable with Chris, Eddy, Dean, and Perry. Some people don't think highly of his title reign, but I say the guy earned it. He damn well earned it.

Rankings
#1 Kurt Angle - 9.53
#2 Bret Hart - 9.05
#3 HHH - 7.89
#4 DDP - 7.69
#5 Kane - 7.33
#6 Rey Mysterio - 6.59
#7 MVP* - 5.95

Destor posted this video about a year ago and I loved it then, figured here would be a good repost.

I'll post this now before anyone does any lame jokes or starts saying "he couldn't work a mic" or any other BS.

Chris Benoit was my favourite wrestler and I considered him a hero, I'm still heartbroken by what happened. I'm not sure I can vote on the poll

5, one dimensional. Could not hold a mic, let alone speak into one.

10. As far as I'm concerned he's the greatest of all time, but sadly his legacy has forever been tarnished by how it ended.

Obviously what he did outside of the ring was awful, but in the ring, there was no one better.

Exactly, regardless of how tragic the incident between him and his family was, it shouldn't completely ruin the legacy of one of wrestling's most prominent competitors. With his immense technical prowess and "rabid" mentality, I actually consider him to be in the same league as the Bret Harts and Kurt Angles of the business in terms of ability.

He gets a solid 9 from me.

10 in the ring, 5 on the mic...I'll round up to an 8.

8, Bad on the mic... and another reason is because he was in the midcard most of his career.
One of the best in the ring though, he had some amazing matches.

Benoit and Angle are the greatest ever in my mind.

I know this is an emotionally charged conversation, but frankly it's easy for me to separate Benoit the performer and Benoit the person. I gave him a 10.

There IS a point that can be made for the one dimensional thing. I always loved Benoit's work as a heel, especially in 2000. I thought he seemed much more dangerous in his heel element, it was a place where he didn't really need to work on the mic. Especially around Unforgiven and Fully Loaded 2000, when Foley reversed two of his title "wins" in main event matches. As a face though, I thought sometimes he was hit or miss. He was NEVER hit or miss in the ring, though.

9, overall he was a solid performer who put on some great matches. The only reason I did not give him a 10 is because his mic work was a little off.

So if I want to kill someone, all I have to do is take roids/medication and I am absolved of responsibility for my actions?

Good to know.

I don't think it's that easy to make a distinction between Chris Benoit the person and Chris Benoit the character. In fact, I'm not even sure if there was a Chris Benoit character, but if there was he wasn't much different from Benoit the person. I was there at MSG for WM 20, and when Benoit finally won the Championship I was standing, cheering, and applauding for Benoit the person.

Anyway, not withstanding the monstrous acts he committed in his final moments, he was one of the greatest in-ring wrestlers. I don't think what he did in his final moments can (or should) completely erase his years of entertaining the fans, though it certainly taints it. I'm giving him a 8 for his contribution to the business.

There's quite a large difference. Benoit murdered his family. He never killed a man in cold blood in the ring.

7. It's a testament to his in-ring skills that he was as successful as he was because his delivery/personality/general acting skills were fucking awful.

Nowhere Man
07-10-2010, 12:13 AM
This one's really tough for me. Benoit was, far and away, my absolute favorite wrestler of all time. When any of my friends asked me why I bothered watching wrestling, I'd put on Benoit/Angle from RR '03 or Benoit/Jericho from '00, and say "that's why." Then, of course, he murdered his family and hung himself. I don't think I've watched more than 45 consecutive minutes of any wrestling show since.

Still, as a performer, I have to give him an 8. His mediocre-at-best mic skills really held him back, but his skills in the ring were more than enough to make up for it in my eyes. I just wish they had been able to prevent what happened...maybe then I'd be able to watch one of his phenomenal matches again without wanting to throw up.

easily be a 10 especially by his in-ring skills but deducted points on poor mic skills and the fact he killed his family and himself.

Benoit the wrestler was awesome.

Benoit the person was always a dick, and at the end he was a psychotic murderous dick.

Still, 9. I'm not saying I would want to have dinner with him knowing he killed his wife and child, but his wrestling was top notch.

At one point in his career, Benoit was the best wrestler in the world. At another point in his career, he murdered his family. Let's balance it out and say 6.
