View Full Version : Critically Acclaimed Films That You Just Don't Like

Schlomey

I got this idea from the "rate the last movie you saw for the first time thread"

What are some movies that the general public and critics LOVE and ADORE that you just could not get in to or that you consider a massive bomb?

SUB QUESTION

What are some critically panned movies that you fucking love?

Schlomey
07-14-2010, 03:40 PM
a movie that was loved by the critics and has millions of fans is District 9. I mean it wasn't a bad film and had important political tones but I wasn't big on it at all. I didn't think the dialog was very good and not a lot really happened.

Movies that are critically panned that I love are easy to name. Step Brothers, Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore ect...

Away from comedies is the movie Reign Over Me. This movie gets a lot of shit from people and the critics. I think Sandler was brilliant and Cheadle wasn't half bad. This movie made me cry and kept me interested the entire film.

Schindlers List. I'll predefine somethings here. I like artsy movies. I like indy movies. I'm not some guy who jizzes at the sight of a new Will Ferrell movie. Action movies are pretty much my least favorite genre. I'm establishing that I think I have similiar taste/background to general critics etc. However didn't enjoy much about this movie at all. When I was watching it I groaned at having to put another disc in to keep watching, cause I already lost interest in it. Maybe I was just not in the mood for it when I did watch it. But dunno, didn't do much for me.

Let's see.... there's a bunch of hyped movies that I dislike but I can't think of that many right now but the two come to mind are Braveheart and Titanic.

Braveheart was one of those supposedly "love or hate" movies I couldn't get up enough interest to love or hate. So I suppose I just don't like it. I mean, it's not bad, but it didn't live up to the hype. And this is coming from someone whose family is half sheepfuc...That is, Scot. I swear, my family gets a collective hardon for anything Scottish.

I think it was just the monologues. I mean, lame as they are, they stick in your head.

Never saw Titanic, and I'm trying really hard to keep that up. Well, not really. But I won't go out of my way to watch it.

As for ones I like...well, I don't make any pretense to only liking the artful movies. I like fun movies, and I think half my collection is comedy of some sort, from sophisticated/Jewish to retarded/black. I like Eurotrip and Super Troopers and the Harold and Kumar movies, all of which are pretty fucking dumb, but they're amusing.

Never saw Titanic, and I'm trying really hard to keep that up. Well, not really. But I won't go out of my way to watch it.

Same.

Also SAW, never saw the appeal to it, I never would have seen it to this day if not for my brother. The twist I guess is unexpected if you watch the movies in order (III was the first one I saw so that ruined that for me) but when you get that out of the way it just seems like another generic horror movie to me.

Generally though if I see a movie with all of the critical acclaim I avoid it. They generally don't appeal to me, I generally like comedies and action films, and everyone drooling over a movie just turns me off to it even more.

Actually thinking about comedies Superbad is actually another one, I got a copy of it from Amazon by mistake when I ordered something, and saw the first few minutes and turned it off. I probably should give it a second chance, but I didn't see what was so funny about it early on.

Usual Suspects - Hated the ending, pretty much negated everything seen up to that point. Fuck, hate this movie.

Hurt Locker - It was whatever

Crash - I can see why people went nuts over it, but it was horribly over dramatic and contrived I thought

Lord of the Rings - Great/ambitious, but I just never really got that into it.

Eurotrip , Super Troopers, Harold & Kumar....all movies in my library. :)

RAWK.

Though i only own Eurotrip and Supertroopers. The former because my friends and I used to get drunk and watch it, and the latter because it's based in Vermont and several of the characters are actually based off dudes from the Brattleboro Barracks.

Kill Bill 1 & 2. Love Tarantino, 'meh' @ those.

Hate Tarrantino, period. I'm yet to enjoy any movie he does. It's like he's trying to emulate other people's ideas, but misses the actual magic that makes them work, or made them work in the case of things which are closer to period pop.

Pirates of The Caribbean triology there all way overrated.

The first one was fun. The second one was long and not fun. The third one was long, somewhat more fun, but strictly stupid.

Also SAW, never saw the appeal to it, I never would have seen it to this day if not for my brother. The twist I guess is unexpected if you watch the movies in order (III was the first one I saw so that ruined that for me) but when you get that out of the way it just seems like another generic horror movie to me.

I've never seen a SAW film because the genre has limited appeal to me. I'm tempted to watch one or two, but I've got a Netflix queue of like 400 movies, so I'm not bored enough.

Yeah, I do try things I might not like. Usually on DVD and usually only through Netflix. Sometimes, I "appreciate" them. I don't like every Kurosawa film, but I can appreciate what went into even the ones I don't like. The dude is an archetype unto himself, so I'm not bashing him. He's just the first example that comes to mind.

Lord of the Rings is part of a novelty genre for me. There are certain movies that seem awesome at the time, and LotR was one that hooked me because of the scenery porn. It had been years since I read the books, and they were filtered through nostalgia glasses, so I forgot about the pages of prose to describe a single blade of grass. It doesn't have to be visuals, anything can be a novelty.

I hated Brokeback Mountain. The characters were wooden, and not in a gay innuendo way. i just couldn't give a fuck about any of them. And even the sodomy seemed forced. I don't know a single gay who loved the movie, their reactions being midling at best. I know a ton of women who loved it, because it was HGA. It's like the entire movie was fanservice to a fanbase that didn't exist yet.

Oh, and I was going to comment on avoiding movies that are " critically acclaimed." I try like fuck to just rent/watch/buy what I like, but excessive gushing does sort of spoil me on a movie.

Braveheart is so historically incorrect that it is painful to watch.

I have never read the books (nor will I), but I liked the two movies based on those Dan Brown novels, Angels and Demons, and the other one. But they got ripped to shreds by the critics.

So you're bitching about the historical accuracy of Braveheart, but you're completely giving Dan Brown a pass?

Dan Brown and the writers of Braveheart. Only one of them claimed their story was 99% accurate.

besides, historical records were sketchy. Who's to say William Wallace wasn't a 3' tall Nazi from Australia?

The Usual Suspects sucked. They tried to redeem an uninteresting story with a twist ending that didn't work because you don't care at all about any of the characters.

Crash was another one I didn't recommend on my review site that registered users rate highly. All of the racism in that movie seemed contrived and none of the characters had any depth beyond the race they were representing. I think the movie also had a bunch of "fancy dialogue" where they just talk for the sake of talking. Could be wrong about that though.

Yeah, After reading the books, I was thinking "thank God this movie isn't as long as it could have been."

The books are long, dry, and deal with minutia. Tolkien's idea of epic included "anal retentive." The movies at least replace it with scenery porn.

I <3 Avatar. I went to it thinking it was Avatar: AirBender because I wasn't paying attention and was confused but happily confused by the end.
