His retirement ended my following of prowrestling (I already stopped watching, but I kept up - not now).

The greatest of all-time, bar none. When I was a kid, I loved Hogan and Warrior and Savage. The first heel I ever got into was Shawn Michaels. There was just something about him that made me think I had to like this guy. I've never really sat down and made this list, but I would guess he was involved in at least 15 out of my 25 favorite matches. I would love to see one more match, but I'm glad he seems serious about staying retired. The ability to stay away is a rare trait, indeed.

In honor of Shawn's birthday I will share a little story with you from the past. I saw what I believe was one of Shawn's first professional matches EVER. Long before the Heartbreak Kid, before WWE/WWF, even before The Midnight Rockers. Back in 1984-1985 most wrestling organizations were regional operations. Back then the Houston area had Paul Boesch as its promoter and he was always one to give new people a try. Shawn's mentor, Jose Lothario, was and still is considered a GOD among Texas wrestling fans. One Friday night Mr. Lothario walked in the back door of the Sam Houston Coliseum and a bit later entered a young kid who we would later learn was Shawn Michaels. Shawn was probably 18 or 19 at the time, but to be honest he looked much younger. His hair was still dark and was only about 2 or 3 inches long. :yes::yes: He had his little bag with him and it was obvious that he would be having a match later. I kinda stared at him for a minute because he was so young, and then I looked around at my friends and said, "What's HE gonna do?? He's not even old enough to DRIVE!" About that time Jose walked back and said something to Shawn and it became obvious at that point that Shawn was there with Mr. Lothario. When I saw that I looked again at my friends and said "OK, OK, maybe he DOES know a little bit." LOL. Shawn was in the opening match that night, against another newcomer, but he won. Seeing him in the ring that night, he clearly had some great skills already and it was obvious even back then that he would eventually become a huge star, which of course he did.

I’ve spent many years watching the brash, over-the-top guy known as HBK or Mr. Wrestlemania, but I always remember the shy young kid named Shawn Michaels.

Happy Birthday Shawn, you thrilled us for 25 years, and we miss you.
