View Full Version : When did you figure out wrestling was not 100% real?

YoungFlyFlashy
07-27-2010, 10:29 AM
Growing up I use to think wrestling was 100% real, I use to even get upset and always wondered why ESPN never covered them. Then I started to realize that for some reason facial hair (this was in the early 90's) on a wrestler that didn't have any before they left automatically meant they were a "bad guy" now. So it was when Crush returned with the goatee, and I was able to predict a heel turn based solely on his facial hair appearance. And from there I just started realizing more unrealistic things.

I knew it pretty soon after I began watching it. I had heard before that it was 'fake' but I thought it was just something people said just to be jerks....kind of like sixty percent of everything said here. But as I watched it became apparent that it had to be an elaborate plan going on. I'll admit it was easier to pretend it was real back then though.

Another incident for me, was when I went to my first live event and when the Undertaker came out, the arena was not cold at all like the announcers always claimed on tv.

I feel your pain. I went to a WCW houseshow in Jacksonville when I was around 8 and afterwards went to dinner with my dad and uncle only to see a group of wrestlers eating together, both faces and heels. Fuckin Flyin Brian ruined my belief....how dare he eat with that evil Barry Windham! That was the day my eyes were opened.

Can't remember exactly but it occurred with either someone saying the matches were fixed or to notice certain moves and notice either the sound came from the mat or the leg of the wrestler.

Before that I never bothered to look for that stuff in a match and was more preoccupied cheering or booing for wrestlers.

As for the blood, the funniest explanation came from a guy when I was 16, he 'knew' how they did everything. Apparently, wrestlers have small, skin-coloured blood packs stuck on their forehead. They're so thin you can't see them. Then they cut them open and out comes the blood.

I just humoured the guy and nodded my head.

That part got on my nerves too when I watched it. I remember watching it when it was first shown and my mum came into the room when that part was on and she believed it. It wasn't until a few years later though that she actually said to me while I was watching SmackDown "They're all given those signs, right?".

I had to tell her no and that "Pro Wrestling's Greatest Secrets" was all nonsense. She thought the same about blood too, she thought the blood wasn't real until I told her about blading.

As for me finding out about it all being predetermined, (I hate using the word "fake") I can't actually pinpoint the moment or anything but I think it was around the time of Owen Hart's death or maybe a few months after it. I remember since he died, always knowing to some degree that wrestling is predetermined.

Also, I hated Nick Bakay's narration of the program so much. He just sounded so condescending that I wanted to hit him with a blunt object.

I just remembered. Here where I live, access to cable was installed around 1997. Now this gave greater access to WWE than what there was previous. This led to some people tuning back into WWE after a five year break. Cue people telling me at 14 that wrestling was now real. This was because of the attitude era being more realistic that the early nineties cartoon era that we had all grew up on.
