View Full Version : As AWESOME as The Rock was...

It just kills me sometimes that his influence led to the creation of stupid, overly theatrical, copycat moves that don't look like they would ever do damage to a guy in a million years! You might also consider this thread a dedication to how much I absolutely HATE the "Five Knuckle Shuffle" and MVP's "Ballin' Elbow Drop."

Say what you want, but at least the Rock made The People's Elbow look "Electrifying" and like it would hurt a guy.

I fear this will be the worst of them especially since he has a beautiful float-over DDT as it is. Seriously, an "Oh Yeah!" splash??

any top rope flippy move is just ridiculous as something that's believable
the shooting star press and any given splash come to mind

I'm sure Hgan putting his hand to his ear before doing his leg drop would have something to say about it.

Hogan sure did find ways to camp up a gay soap opera.
We're tlking about different eras there though. A Leg Drop was a finisher in Hogan's day.
As for the People's Elbow, people always try to sell it as a move that "puts an exclamtion mark on the match" as in, The Rock has you beat before he hits it and is just doing it to show off. Whether you buy that or not is up to you.

Are you saying the same couldn't be sometimes said of Hogan's Leg Drop? I mean surely he must have had a few easy opponents who he could beat with the Hulk Up combination (finger wag, punch x3, irish whip w/boot to the face) as easily as he could with the leg drop. And the leg drop was pretty showy itself, especially given how Hogan would whip the crowd into a frenzy by putting his hand up to his ear and pointing at the poor schmuck who would soon be flattened.

The Ballin' Elbow and Five Knuckle Shuffle aren't even finishers.

Let's be clear.... YES! Hogan popularized the over-the-top finishing maneuver. Obviously lots of wrestlers followed his example when it came to those huge finisher setups: Warrior, Earthquake, HTM, HBK, Taker, etc.
The point is, those were all finishers. The People's Elbow was never a finisher, nor was it meant to be. It's a signature move that really got the crowd riled up. And you knew that the Rock Bottom was coming after. I know The Great One has been influenced by Hogan because he's said so countless times. I'm not trying to claim the Rock originated flashy moves. Hell... even for all he's given to the business, Hogan can't even claim THAT one.
However... That stupid "Truffle Shuffle" of Cena's and "Air Ball Elbow Drop" look and play out like blatant ripoffs of "The People's Elbow". It's just sad how weak they look. It feels like Vince is trying to create a new Rock by having his guys do "Rock"-like moves.
Somehow I get the feeling that this is going to be the part where people mention Orton and Austin....

My problem with the Five Knuckle Shuffle isn't with the impact of the move (you lay there and let a guy jump in the air and punch you in the face and tell me how it feels), its the fact that everyone Cena faces falls for the sequence. You'd think that people would watch Cena's matches and know that after he shoulder blocks you twice, don't flail at him.
I can't wait until someone counters the sequence and just lays Cena out...would be a total markout moment for me.

You can't apply logic to wrestling though. f most matches finish when some hits their "finisher", why doesn't every wrestler just spent the entire match trying to hit their finisher?
Also, Road Dogg used his jiggy-wiggy knee drop before The Rock came up with The People's Elbow, I think.
