View Full Version : Could a black guy pull off what Cena did/ is doing?

I was watching some bootleg Smackdowns on Justin TV a few days ago and there was this one dude on there who kept calling Cena Elvis because in his opinion they both had success ripping off black people. Of course he got the business partially because he also said some stupid stuff about white people (pretty sure he was some guy trolling), but you do have to wonder.

Rapping about opponents, wearing jorts and jerseys to the ring, and his stupid ass mannerisms made the guy a champion and the face of the company. Hell, they even desecrated the belt and made it a spinner for his "thug life" gimmick.

But then you look at someone like R Truth who has the same charisma, more talent, and a very similar type of gimmick and he's stuck in mid card hell.

What do you guys think? Keep it respectful, I don't want Triple A or a moderator on my ass.

I guess this comes more down to the audience demographic than the wrestling company itself.

A guy like R-truth has a nice gimmick going on, but because the audience is predominantly white (I'm hurling this out of my behind btw, based entirely on watches audiences on the shows), I think it's just a sad truth that the audience will buy a white champion better.
If skin colour made no difference then R-truth could've done what Cena did if given the same or similiar circumstances - but in the end we'd all still complain that "the champ" is horrible and that we'd rather have someone else as the face of the company.. someone who isn't invincible.

The more interesting question as I see it - is how the hell did Cena do what he did...

k, couple things first:

R Truth does not have the same Charisma as Cena. He's not even close. You may not like John Cena's gimmick, but he seriously has the personality.

Second, desecrated? :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

It's a fake title in a fake sport. The list of guys who have run with the various heavyweight titles include a guy who humped a corpse in a Kane mask, a guy who murdered his family, drug addicts, and guys who pulled Nazi salutes...In Germany. Yeah, the sanctity of a fake title that supports such values....

Shut the fuck up. The spinner is ugly, dumb, but desecration? :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Cena probably never would have gotten over with the current family direction if he was black. Part of his current appeal is that he's considered attractive to tweens and women, non-threatening, etc. Blacks can't pull that off as readily in the US, because of rather inherent biases. One, we're mostly white, and people prefer people who look like them. This is neither good nor bad, it just is. Two, white people is scared of niggaz. That is wrong, but it still exists.

That dates back to before Elvis in the music world, and it still does exist today.

Could he have gotten over rapping about opponents, dressing gangsta and shit? Maybe. But he never would have been pushed as the face of the company as he is/was. He might have even pushed merchandise, as certainly Mysterio sells the shit, but even Rey Rey isn't the face of the company.

This is exactly how Cena's career should end. On the stage, staring into the camera, doing the "you can't see me" with this exact music playing.
