View Full Version : Going through all the WCW events of 1999

Inspired by the WCW quotes thread, I decided to get all the wrestlecrap I can from this "golden era" of WCW. Call me a masochist, but there was some good wrestling and hilariously bad writing, including Russo taking over soon. Going to be dipping in and out when I'm super bored.
To be honest though, I did think we started with the fingerpoke of doom on the very first Nitro of '99. A vintage year for sure :D

Video package showing the end of the Goldberg V Nash match from the end of '98 with the stun gun. Never noticed how terrible their packages were compared to WWF at the time.
1999 is kicked off with Hugh Morris Vs Glacier. HOT.

 Norman Smiley heel turn beating down Chavo after he beat him
Bar a botch from Chavo, great match as well. The Big Wiggle.
OK, Horace Vs. Benoit and Benoit had the jobber entrance.
Benoit wins and then Goldberg has a 10 minute debate with police about him being arrested. Come on, he should have stayed silent. The guy can't talk without repeating himself about 20 million times. Nash shouting at the car as it drives away and politican Hogan is hilariously bad.
Still, time to be made up. Jerichoooooo with Ralphus against Saturn.

Gonna upload some of this to YouTube.
Honestly, there's already been so much crap on this show and the crowd is so damn hot it's unreal. I know it's WCW in Georgia, but still. They've got Hogan V Nash later tonight, their hero Goldberg is in jail and they are cheering and booing everything.
Awesome lWo promo, which was followed by a tornado tag match. Brilliant match, but I have no idea why guys kept going out to be tagged in as they kept pointing out in commentary that all 4 guys could be in the ring at the same time.
Tonys just said his line about Mankind winning the title on the competition. That's going to put bums on seats

Can't stomach Thunders right now, on 11-01 Nitro. Crowd is still insanely hot. Just announced the main event of Souled out to be Goldberg V Scott Hall in a Taser on a pole match and J.J. Dillion was re-instated :|
Eddie broke his leg and Flair just disbanded the lWo as well. (Bar Rey Mysterio who didn't want to be part of lWo, but walked out with the shirt on)

For all their flaws and wrongdoings, WCW did have some solid matches during 1999. Uncensored and Spring Stampede were both pretty good PPVs, except maybe the Uncensored main event.

Yeah, the undercard is pretty hot on Nitro as well.
But I'm just watching the nWo come out for their 3rd segment in an hour of TV destroying Rey after a decent match. Lex destroyed him, Konnan comes out and asks whats up with that as Wolfpack don't roll like that and then they tase KDawg and spraypaint him.
Now, nWo out for the 4th time with Giant coming out as he's got a match against Nash for the only giant for the nWo. Predictable who will win that one.

lol fuck, then after a video package of Hogan and Nash discussing the fingerpoke match, Buff and Scott are out for a match. At least it's against DDP. Just before that though was awesome with middle-class Raven and Sandman... Sorry, Hardcore Hak, going through some old boxes of Ravens stuff at his mums and pulled out a Piper poster.
Awesome lWo promo

Ugh, can't believe I just watched that entire Nash/Giant match. And now the entire nWo comes out once more to celebrate. Giant becomes the 4th man tazed.
There's been more un-needed tazes than an American police department apprehending a black man.
Souled Out '99 next... Starting with Goldberg holding his knee backstage and an unannounced match between Mike Enos and Benoit...
Chavo V Smiley has been given 20 mins so far and it's been awesome
Ugh, until the finish. How is Pepe's sawdust to the eye not a fucking DQ?!
Konnan Vs Luger. Doubt this will be a classic, but seriously, when I was watching this back in the day, I don't remember Konnan being this over. It's incredible. The pops he's getting for every burst of offense is Rock like.

Great match but that was the worst SSP I've seen Kidman do.

Watching the main event of Scott Hall V Goldberg ladder match. Scott Hall is actually looking damn good.
The previous match of Ric Flair/David Flair (On his debut!) against Henning and Windham was pretty sucky.
Jerichoooooo with Ralphus against Saturn.

There were some awful things about 1999 like Vince Russo's booking the last three months. Honestly, i don't think 1999 was as awful as people make it out to be. The fingerpoke of doom was a bad decision, but I marked out for it when it actually happened, because I just watched what was going on in the ring. Some of the 1999 PPVs are some of my favorites. I really enjoyed Superbrawl, Uncensored, Spring Stampede, Slamboree, Fall Brawl, Mayhem and Starrcade. Those last two are Russo booking but I just liked those shows. I'm a WCW fan though and I stuck with it through 2000 as well even though there was alot of stuff going on. I liked WWE better in 1999 and 2000, because The Rock was being built up as the top guy, but I always switched between the shows. Plus in 1999 even if it was a short time Diamond Dallas Page was champion.

Dude, spoilers :shifty:
The Nitro after Souled Out and I loved seeing the ref that had cancer give Savid Flair a roll of coins and knock Bischoff out. We're enjoying this more than I thought we would. Beers are helping though.
Steiner getting blanked for saying queers, Jericho Vs. Booker T and Jericho insulting Jo Jo Dillion has made this a quality episode so far.
Steiner Vs. Saturn right now. Battle of the siren themes. But speaking of, last weeks Nitro, decent Saturn/Jericho promo and the match at Souled Out.

Last Nitro of January. Henning beaten on a runway and Flairs crazier than ever.
Actually forgot how much I like Hall the few times he's actually "on" and the pop that Disco Inferno got after his win was ridiculous. for an unofficial nWo member.
Awesome ladder match going on between Hall and Bam Bam, tarred slightly by fucking Zybysko cutting off Tenay who's saying about how much the ladder hurts by saying "It's just aluminum" (Pronounced wrongly :shifty: )
Bret V Booker T up on this episode as well. First appearance of the year for the Hitman.
lol Bret. He's facing a mystery opponent at Superbrawl and Bret thinks it should be El Dandy.
Gene Mean: "But he's a cruiserweight"
Bret: "He's a quality wrestler, who are you to doubt El Dandy?! OK fine, how about Hypnosis?"
Gene: "You mean Psychosis"

It dies as soon as Eddie broke his leg though. Couldn't carry it on much further than that with no real charasmatic mouthpiece.
Got Meng and Barbarian against Finlay and Dave Taylor right now. Not great but not bad. Got a wall of WCW wrestlers around the ring because everytime there's been a tag team tournament match, the nWo have destroyed it.

I was at a Smackdown house show in Perth, Australia and there was a guy in a La Parka mask and a guy in a Psychosis mask. That proves it could've been something. Triple H was in a wheelchair but still represented DX. I understand that Eddie was the mouthpiece but all u really need is in-ring skill. Basically if i was booking; it would have been a war between heavyweights and cruisers. Imagine Hogan v Mysterio... Seriously imagine that!

Dunno where they're going with this nWo angle. I know that the black and white are the B-Team right now, but on a Thunder, Vincent did everything that the Wolfpac didn't want to happen then said "We gotta do this now, trim the fat" and then took out Henning instead and love Vincent.
Stevie Ray had a talk with Hogan which made the Henning thing happen and Stevie thinks he's the leader, but Vincent is in the limo with the Wolfpack.
OK, worst undercard match I've seen so far, actually praying for an nWo destruction. Kenny Kaos Vs. Van Hammer. Kenny Kaos isn't a bad mid-carder, but Van Hammer is terrible. Van Hammer gets the win and it's a Sandman (errrr, Hardcore Hak) in ring debut destroying Van Hammer
When he was on that Raven promo, he must have just been someone who looked like him or just an un-named Hardcore Hak. I actually marked a little.
#BROKEN Hasney

He fucking lost on his debut to Bigalow. Kinda annoyed by that.
Kidman V Lash Laroux. It's Lash's first Nitro appearance and he's some crazy ginger. I can only remember him with blonde/black hair.
This is turning out to be the best Nitro I've watched yet. Jericho V Steiner now. Jericho even sent Ralphus to the back before the match.

On the second Nitro of Feb and we've had a Torrie Wilson debut and a Blitkreig debut against Rey Mysterio
I honestly think that Blitzkreig was my fave in WCW. This is the best debut match I've seen from anyone.
The more I watch as well, the more I like Tenay again. He's not a play-by-play guy, but as a colour guy, his knowledge is great.
Rey wins it and Kanyon turns up at Ravens mansion. Getting in a Ferrari and Raven calling Kanyon a mark for beliving he's always depressed.

Watching the worst Nitro yet. It is the only episode so far worse than the best impact in the last 2 years. Hate these fucking spring break episodes, got some douchebag "cool" host, horrible acoustics and Dusty Rhodes was just interviewed for no apparant reason.
Hopefully, Raven and a mystery partner V Malenko and Benoit later should make it good.

I don't remember this at all. In Canada, nWo are as good as faces, DDP heeled the crowd by calling them jack-offs and then did a lot of face work and Flair is the ultimate heel and Bischoff is nowhere to be found. Who was booking at this point? March 1999.
DDP just heeled the crowd again. This is insane booking, Steiners still a heel and DDP wants him.
#BROKEN Hasney
08-07-2010, 04:54 AM
Spring Stampede 1999 just doesn't make sense. The last Nitro (the one after the Toronto one) DDP is face again, Sting returns and when he does, he points at the screen and a message from the Macho Man announces that the main event is Flair v Hogan V Sting V DDP with Macho Man the ref.
Flairs the president and didn't make the match. JJ Dillon is the commisoner and Flair has him in his back pocket and didn't make the match. WTF.
Also in that Toronto episode, Hart did his worked shoot of "quitting" WCW.
Booker T V Jericho for the TV Title

I'm at Slamboree 99 and Bischoffs booking is... Well, saying it's fucked would put it lightly.
End of 98', Flair wins a match to be prez of WCW for 90 days. Ric and David Flair beat Henning and Windham at the Jan PPV, the following Nitro, David Flair beats Bischoff to give Flair the presidency for his lifetime. Feb PPV, David Flair joins the Wolfpac and costs Flair the title, March PPV Flair wins the title off Hogan. April PPV Flair loses the title to DDP.
In the following Nitros, Commisioner Piper gets Flair sectioned due to mental health and it's going to be Flair V Piper Slamboree. After several run-ins and Little Naitch reffing, Flair wins to stay president of WCW.
After the match, Bischoff who has not been an on screen character since he lost to David Flair comes out and overrules the decision to declare the winner as Piper and install him as president of WCW?! It doesn't even make sense, which is pissing me off because I was actually enjoying crazy Ric.
Booker T V Rick Steiner - Stevie Ray keeps interfering in their matches on Nitro to give Booker T cheap wins. Because of this booking, people are treating Booker T as a heel and Rick Steiner as someone no-one cares about. Scott Steiner comes out and helps Rick win.
Buff Bagwell V Scott Steiner - Earlier, Rick Steiner warned Buff that if he finds Scott, Scott may not make it to the ring for getting involved in his match. Rick predictably comes down and helps Scott.
Goldberg V Sting - Should have been a fucking hot match. Instead, they hotshot an angle the previous Nitro and bill it as franchise against franchise. With a proper build, the crowd would have been hot. But they're mildly hot for a hotshotted match.
Match ends when Bret Hart who "quit" WCW a couple of months ago comes back and attacks Goldberg with a chair, ruining what should have been a marquee event.
Then the Steiners come out and attack Goldberg and Sting. I shit you not.
Nash and DDP are entering for the title match right now but I'm not expecting much. At least the opening match of Kidman/Rey V Benoit/Malenko V Raven/Saturn is fucking hot and has been built up over about 2 months.

That makes sense. To be fair, up until this point it's not been horrific but since Slamboree it has been.
It was explained that Bischoff actually had no power so Flair is still prez but the title match remains because Bischoff just suggested to the ref to restart the match and he had the power to do so...

Found it all. Up until March Bischoff was still in main control. April onwards, Bischoff only turns up to Nitro when he's on camera and Nash is booking until Russo comes in.
