View Full Version : Weakest Title Reigns in Recent Memory

Sheamus's current title reign is just awful. He's looked like a coward since the Nexus angle started and then tonight he spends more time face down than Pat Patterson's fuck buddy. Obviously the Nexus angle has been huge, but I can't imagine the heavyweight belt would be taking such a backseat if Orton, HHH, Cena, Jericho, Edge etc... had the belt.
Of the last 10 years, who has looked the weakest as heavyweight champion due to booking, stronger programs, or because they couldn't get over as top guys?

Easy answer is swagger.
Then rey....
and of course.....Cena.
I just never bought the guy as champ. :)

I'm sorry, but the lack of emphasis and importance placed on the world title on Raw in recent months is just ridiculous. It's like a fucking joke at this point. They barely talk about it or even try to sell it as an important thing to have or want.

Sheamus has looked like a joke lately. Won it due to interference, retained it due to interference, could have lost it twice to Miz if he wasn't knocked the fuck out, lost via DQ to Orton, and has gotten laid the fuck out almost every week. For a guy built as a monster, they really haven't made him look threatening at all.
I disagree with the Swagger sentiment though. He did win clean over Orton, which is a whole lot more than a lot of champs can say.

Sheamus isn't supposed to look like a monster. He's a transitional champ. He's supposed to piss people off and make them hate him more and more so that people really get behind Orton and yearn for his eventual title win.

Edge's 1st reign since it lasted about 2-3 weeks after winning it at the start of the year against Cena by cashing in the Money in the Bank case. Edge's first 4 reigns as champions never lasted more than 1-2 months at a time.
RVD's duo-title reign as ECW and WWE champion but mostly because of him being a dumbass with the weed than poor booking.
No Mercy in 2007 where Orton and Triple H held the title for a combined 3 reigns before PPV was over (Orton gets title handed to him, Triple H wins title, Orton retakes title later in PPV).

I think you're letting length dictate strength too much. I would say CM Punk's first reign was very weak, as well as Jericho's most recent.
I'm sure there are a few others mixed in there too.

For sure, but to the naysayers, no matter how you look at it, Sheamus did successfully defend his title at a MAJOR PPV event for the first time ever. Granted the ending was pure shit, but as JBL always used to say when he did SD! commentary the ends justify the means.
Seeing as how Sheamus ("The REAL Big Red Monster" as he called himself last night at SummerSlam) had a great "test run" the 1st time, I say let him hang on to it until at least shortly after Survivor Series to keep really laying more of the foundation out for his continued success, because obviously if he keeps up this level of awesomeness in the years to come his world title count could someday come to rival Triple H's or Flair's, at least IMHO.

Sheamus hasn't been booked like a coward. He's just not a great champion. He's also pretty early into his career so all that can be explained away in that he's going up against seasoned competitors.

Chris Benoit's title reign was great (I'm a Benoit mark), but could have been much better. It always took a backseat to the Triple H/Michaels feud at the time. :nono:

Well, he's not supposed to look like a monster anymore. When he came up, he was built on the fact that he was so tough he could put someone out for good (Jamie Noble, HHH) as well as being a complete dickhead. They've gotten away from that in recent months, which is kind of unfortunate because I liked that about his character.
I'm hoping next week or thereabouts Sheamus just lays Orton the fuck out, maybe even so much so that they have medics come and check on him (though Orton would refuse help). Have him get the upper hand via heelish means (low blow, poke to the eyes, numbers game, whatever), and have him go ape shit on Orton, just to remind fans of what he can do. Would really crank up the feud a notch IMO.

Yeah, hers and Eve's run with the Divas' Championship were both awful. Makes me really hope they're going for an 'Undisputed' WWE Women's Championship. Only thing is though, if they unify every last belt with another (not to say they will, but if...), we could be looking at the time to go ahead and just do away with the brand split entirely and go back to the early '02 era where all the champions were free to compete on either brand, but everyone else was stuck on RAW or SD! It would give more new guys/untapped talent a chance to make a name for themselves as well as give everyone incentive to step up their game if they want to really get over huge with fans.

Swaggers reign was good and HOPEFULLY leads to him staying in the main event scene. Rey's recent run was pathetic too. He stayed off TV. He played up an injury angle. And lost the title quick. Blah.

Agree with Rey Rey on both of his title reigns...his first one was a sympathy biscuit and was on a losing streak as champ, his second reign was to keep the guy happy coz he wanted out.

Jeff Hardy's WWE title reign was definitely weak, especially considering the build-up (beating the likes of Undertaker and Triple H, the angle of being attacked before his big title shot at Survivor Series, beating Edge and Trips in the triple threat at Armageddon). He never defended the title until Royal Rumble, when he lost to Edge to kick off the feud with Matt, and I'm not even sure he wrestled on SmackDown between the title win and title loss. The entire reign was only done to start what ended up being a lackluster feud for WrestleMania.
Punk's first World Heavyweight title reign was also weak, but it seems like all MITB cash-in reigns are.
The second title reigns for both were much better, though, and it turns out they were intertwined. Honestly one of my favorite feuds of the past few years, but that's a different subject.

Orton's first.
Which first title reign for Orton? WHT or WWE Championship? Both were ended by Triple H. One lasted a month, and the other one in a day. Though he won the title back at the end of that day and had a pretty good second WWE Title reign.
Weakest title reign in recent memory? Angelina Love winning the Knockout title by pulling it out of a box.
'Nuff said.
