I was just talking with someone about UFC doing one night tournaments again. I don't really know why they don't do one a year and treat it like their "World Series" (or yes Wrestlemania/Superbowl/etc...) They could switch every year the weight class so it's a big deal when it comes around.

Has anyone herd anything about this?

What is preventing it from happening? Is it the Unified MMA rules? I read that Bellator was doing a one night tournament recently and it got me thinking how great it would be too see 8 of UFC's best in a particular weight class go at it in a one night tournament.

I would like to see them again but I doubt they can still do them. [/adding nothing]

Not gonna happen.. Leban fighting twice in a two week span is the closest two ufc fights in like 10 years..

MMA is a big money sport now. No way they risk injury/future pay days running a one nighter

Shit, even "Battle of the TOUGH GUYS" was not a one nighter :)

Strikeforce should do it, since they're not that credible anyway.

Are the MMA rules against it?

They eliminated the tournament style early on do to the fact the main events sucked cause the fighters had fought several times that night.. It was before UFC 10, so I dunno if those type rules changed when it was sanctioned in '01..

Pride still had "Grand Prix" (`tournament style cards) well into the 2000's.. The last was in 2006, I believe..

Strikeforce will be doing one later this year. There is no chance of the UFC doing one again.

It's not profitable. Like it was already said, there's too much risk of injury when dudes fight 2 or 3 times in a night. Add to that that they're tired and it makes for shitty fights, which means lower revenue.

Have they done it before?

I'm a huge fan of tournaments, but one day tournaments don't interest me at all.

When I watch mixed martial arts I want to see them fight at their peek. To fight at there peek they need their full training camp to get into top physical condition and to come up with the best possible game plan. One day tournaments are good in round one but as the rounds go on you get sever diminishing returns not only physically but also preparation wise as well.

They still use the same US Athletic Commission rules while out of the country.. Like when the go to the UK or Canada or Abu Dahbi, etc..

Me and a friend at work were discussing this last week. UFC really should have it's own Wrestlemania-style event. Maybe it could be a one-off where all the titles are on the line?

they'd be fucked for a few events after it though. it's fine the way it is.

They've had a few "elite" events like Ultimate 98 and UFC 100..

i thought 117 was better than 116 as a whole, minus the whole fitch/alves borefest.

I didn't see 117 cause of work, but 116 was the best PPV I'd seen top to bottom since 100..

Looking at those cards I have seen alot of the "bigger" fights from them, like KenFlo/Penn and Nog/Couture..
