Never seen it, but it sounds interesting. Perhaps I will watch it and then report my findings.

It's not even close. American History X is one of the most overrated films ever. It's decent enough and has a couple of very good performances from Furlong and Norton, but to be honest I think so many dickheads just have a hard on for it because of the "kerb stomp" nonsense and because they miss the point of the film. I think it feeds more into a latent racist feeling despite the message of the film. It's really not that good.

This Is England is a great film. It's genuinely creepy and chilling when this thug and his racist poison starts to creep into this good, nice group of friends. This Is England is a believable and real tale of the effect of fascism on society. You can believe in the characters and their relationships, whereas American History X is full of caricatures.

If they did it in THIS IS ENGLAND you could say Kerb.

In AHX it is Curb. We are Amurrican.

The last 20 minutes of This is England > the curb stomp, or for that matter, any part of American History X.

No. Nowadays "kerb" means those things by the road while "curb" is the verb meaning to control or limit something.

No, not a chance. Dead Man's Shoes is good enough but not better than This Is England. There's some massive plot issues in Dead Man's Shoes.

The scene where they confront him with a rifle, shoot once then leave. The drug spiking scene. The actual acid trip scene is brilliant but getting there was unfortunately just too stupid for me to overlook.

There were another couple of things too. It was a film with a great atmosphere and brilliant performances, but unfortunately some of the plotting was not intelligent but just downright contrived and that detracted from the film for me, making it just ok and not great.

I've kind of been hoping there would be an International war on TPWW ever since I got here. There have been close calls but there was never something to take it over the top.

Some of us don't care about football though. The best thing would probably be the food. Every time there is a thread about food I sense International tensions.

I own it but, aside from Russell Crowe I don't really enjoy it all that much.

Nope, sorry Swiss but incorrect.

ECG basically said everything I believe about the two movies already. What I thought was brilliant about This Is England was that it showed believably how people can be brain-washed. American History X jumped from "regular kid" to "White Supremacist Killer" without enough backstory.

Norton was amazing in the film but yeah, it kind of made racism look good for Christ's sake.

I am still planning of re-editing the film and taking all of the positive message out. I think it would be disturbingly funny.

Seriously, do some research.

For all you out there who love to complain when Americans, and certain others, call “Football”, “Soccer”, you should know that it was the British that invented the word and it was also one of the first names of what we now primarily know of as “Football”.

In fact, in the early days of the sport among the upper echelons of British society, the proper term for the sport was “Soccer”. Not only that, but the sport being referred to as “Soccer” preceded the first recorded instance of it being called by the singular word “Football” by about 18 years. This happening when it became more popular with the middle and lower class. When that happened, the term “Football” gradually began dominating over “Soccer” and the then official name “Association Football”.

Plus when the sport became popular in America we already had a sport called football.

Just watched This is England on Netflix. Definitely the better film.

Pretty stupid that they're making a series out of it, imo. Works fine as a stand alone film.

Meadows says that if this series is successful, that he will follow it with another though. So who knows where it will end.

At least it's being done by all the same people, so that's something.

See, Europeans are more confused about their own sport than we are. We're just confused about why they think it's fun. They can't even get the name right.

I like "This is England" better, American History X feels too plot driven but instead of just unfolding naturally it resorts to these big dramatic moments. I found it also uses these moments to cheaply get to the morality of the film. This is England almost feels like a documentary in the way it just observes this fracturing culture and the relationships inside it. Also I think a lot of the performances in This is England were by non-professional actors, something that gets a thumbs up from me.

Exactly, and at no time does it seemingly glorify racism like X does at times.
