I don't think this belongs in the tv/movies forum. It's more of a tech thing I suppose.

So I'm considering cutting out my cable company, Comcast. Getting tired of paying alot for only a little. Tiny selection of HD channels, good channels getting removed, stupid ones getting put in it's place. Hell, they just gave me SNY. Maybe it's just my market, I'm here in the Northeast.

Thinking about making the jump to satelite. AT&T or Verizon doesn't have service in my neighborhood yet. Direct TV looks pretty good, yet Dish Network is slightly cheaper. Don't know much about TiVo other that it's a DVR and everybody's got that option now.

Suggestions to other companies or your experiences with your cable provider are appreciated as always.

Direct TV is pretty much the only way to get true HD (1080p) signals for movies and sports. However, the major problems with service are as follows:

It's expensive as fuck. Installation will most definitley not be free, no matter what anyone tells you.

The HD box costs more to rent from Direct TV.

The dreaded 2 year contract. If you don't like your service after a month, fuck you and too bad. The second you activate a box, whether HD or Regular, you are automatically locked into a 2 year agreement regardless of what you do or do not sign. My cousin "bought" her parents an HD reciever at Best Buy 2 christmases ago to discover that she paid $200 for the priveledge of "renting" the box from Direct tv on a monthly basis, along with the automatic 2 years tacked on to the existing contract at the time of hook up. Long story short, satellite isn't worth the hassle, especially If you are trying to save money.

Then again cable pretty much sucks too so what can you do

I got my cable cut because it was $50 a month for the same shows on different channels and mostly watched Family Guy, Simpsons or Futurama reruns.

Only time it was worth it was during the hockey season and even then.

Thought this was about internet, and was going to say satellite internet is garbage.

Anyways, I love my satellite TV. Much clearer than cable, and the HD is glorious. DirecTV is horrible, IMO. Expensive as fuck.

Dish Network is the goods. Have not had any complaints about their service. It is broadcast in 720p if I recall correctly, so its not 1080p, but it looks damn good on my 50". We have 2 TVs hooked up to one box, and our signal rarely goes out except during the worst storms.

Dish Network would be the way to go for sattelite. If they had some kind of an internet tie-in plan like TimeWarner, I'd prolly switch over.
