First, hey Gertner.
Anyway, just got back from EVOLVE 5. This is my first indy show in 10 years and I have to say, without a doubt, it was the best wrestling I've seen live on one show. I knew a very small portion of the talents, but they still managed to capture my interest and gave one hell of a show.
Had third row seats, direct opposite the hard camera, so my fat ass will be on the whole DVD. High Spots and a few other vendors were there selling DVDs, magazines and the like.
I don't know if this is how indy shows tend to run, but there was very little downtime between matches, and no entrances. I'm not sure if this is a regular thing or if it was just because the ROH show was starting an hour and 45 minutes after it ended and they were trying to get as much as they could done.
Opened with a decent match. Quack over Taylor.
Went onto Flip Kendrick and Louis Lyndon vs Up In Smoke. Up In Smoke won. Very fun match.
Jimmy Jacobs vs Adam Cole was the first match that REALLY got my attention. Never really seen Jacobs in the ring, but he was amazing. I get the same thing with him that I get with Punk. Pretty funny spot where he fucked up something from the turnbuckle and he motioned at Cole, blaming him for the blown spot. Jacobs won.
Loved Sami Callihan (who I call mini Sheamus) vs. Drake Younger. Really brutal and stiff match. Callihan bladed (only blood on the show). Became a huge fan of Callihan here. Younger won.
Then there was a six way. Brad Allen vs. Johnny Gargano vs. Gran Akuma vs. Jon Moxley vs. Frightmare vs. Rich Swann. Moxley really impressed me. Wasn't a fan of Frightmare at all, was too much flash and rolling for my taste. Good match overall though. Can't remember the name of who won. X Pac was watching this match from the back and later moved to the bleachers behind the camera (I think he was there for the convention which I didn't go to).
After this, Homicide debuted and essentially set up a feud between he and Moxley for down the road at EVOLVE.
Intermission.
Mercedes Martinez over Awesome Kong via DQ. Ref kept getting in her way and she finally snapped and tried to Powerbomb him, but he escaped. Mercedes reversed a Powerbomb into a DDT afterward and then they brawled to the back.
Kyle O'Reilly over Ricochet. Good match here. Really like O'Reilly.
Danielson over Sawa with the LeBell lock. Amazing match. Was honestly one of the best matches I've seen live. Easily top ten. Amazingly stiff kicks, with Sawa no selling/taunting at a lot of Danielson's stuff. It reminded me a lot of Tanaka and Balls trading the chair shots, only with kicks and strikes.
Afterward, Danielson cut a promo about how EVOLVE is his baby and he thanked the fans, specifically the north east fans. The show ended with him teasing Final Countdown (there were no real entrances with music) and finally giving it to us. A few fans threw some ties and he went after a camera man. Then he went around and shook hands. Pure awesomeness and I can definitely see how much the indies mean to him and how genuine and respectful he is when it comes to the business.
Anyway, on a whole, it was a very solid 2 hour show (with the intermission) with amazing in-ring action and the best event I've ever been to in terms of in-ring wrestling. Really feel I caught the indy bug here. They announced DGate for October 30th at Rahway Rec and I might go to that, but I'm definitely going to EVOLVE 6 if it's around here.
