Like TTT1 was an updated Tekken 3, this game looks like an update of Tekken 6. Partner can now trade hits within a juggle, which may be very gay or totally hype depending on your views.

Coming out in a timely manner, though.

Would be happy if they just added a tag feature to 6 as DLC. Will have to see how much gets added to see if it is worth it.

Dunno, Tekken Tag just wasn't as fun as straight up Tekken 3 for me. I suppose it might be good if they keep shit like stage breaking and add a couple of people, seeing as it's not a main series game.

TTT was pretty much me and my guy's favorite Tekken before T5 came out. Seriously fun.

As everyone knows… The previously announced Street Fighter X TEKKEN and TEKKEN X Street Fighter titles are part of an overall “Fighting Game Festival.” But, the first title in the “festival” is announced today (at TOUGEKI)… TEKKEN TAG TOURNAMENT 2. Tentatively scheduled for a Summer 2011 arcade release in Japan.

TEKKEN fans are in for a real treat as the order of releases for games will be:

TEKKEN TAG TOURNAMENT 2
Street Fighter X TEKKEN
TEKKEN X Street Fighter
Today’s teaser trailer is in-game footage, not CG. It might look similar to TEKKEN 6, but the graphics engine has been tweaked/improved to support up to 4 characters on screen at once. The character models were redone from TEKKEN 6 moving onward to TTT2.

TTT2 will follow the same control scheme as the original Tekken Tag Tournament: One stick for movement and 5 action buttons. As seen in the teaser, there will be tag combos involving both characters tagging in and out-in succession to complete multi-hit combos/juggles. Walled stages remain and breakable walls/floors are still in the game. New mechanics and stage features will also be implemented. As seen in the trailer, there are some possible unique attacks depending on the character teams that are chosen (Ex. Jin & Asuka).

Several characters are featured in the trailer, but the character lineup will not be announced for some time.

Joystiq: How long have you been working on Tekken Tag Tournament 2?

Katsuhiro Harada: Actually there was some talk at first of doing this before Tekken 6 came out, but when we discussed it amongst ourselves and the team we felt like we first wanted to make a proper sequel to 6 to see how far we could push the limits of our graphics engine on that hardware before going to Tag.

As you've seen for yourself in the trailer, we have three or four characters on the screen at once so that's simply twice as much power needed than previously for example in Tekken 6. So obviously trying to do that right off the bat earlier on would be much more difficult.

If it's running on the same technology as 6, which came not only to arcades but to consoles, what are your console plans for Tag 2?

As we announced, it will see an arcade release first. That's where most of our efforts are focused on at the moment. But that being said, we do want to provide a chance for all of our fans abroad to be able to enjoy the game. That's about all I can say at this point.

The first Tekken Tag Tournament came out in 1999. Why did it take 12 years to go back to a tag-based fighter?

As I said on stage, it was pretty much the result of many years of the fans giving us feedback that they wanted tag. At first, for the development team when we started out we had [Tekken] 3 and we thought the natural progression would be to go to 4 and 5 and such as a proper roadmap. Tag came about, first of, as an idea that I had after about five minutes of thinking. We were all really quite surprised when that took off and gained the popularity that it did. So we had to rethink the roadmap again once more. After working on the proper sequels and still considering all the fan feedback and how much that has just gradually increased over the years and gotten to the point where we just really had to seriously consider it.

Tekken x Street Fighter was announced recently, and today you announced this. Both are high-profile games. How are you resourcing both of these projects? Are there multiple teams?

Actually, before Street Fighter x Tekken and that whole announcement came about, Tag 2 was already in the works, so that's something that we've already originally planned for. Really the question is now "so what do we want to do with Tekken x Street Fighter?" It's getting a lot more people, and assigning them and such, as well as making game ideas on where to take that.

What do you think about the recent resurgence of fighting games, with titles like BlazBlue, Street Fighter and such?

Well, this is something that I've said before continuously. The Tekken series, if you look at it alone, each installment in the console versions sell about five million copies lifetime, and has continued for about fifteen years now. Plus the income from the arcades haven't really dropped off at all for the Tekken series in general. From our standpoint, it's not like anything has really changed much. The one thing that is noticeable perhaps is that other series, like Street Fighter IV coming back after a blank of about ten years or so, Mortal Kombat is starting to come back. I think that's where some of the changes are occurring, rather than us. We've been rather constant. [BURN]

Now that you've settled from the excitement of the Tekken Tag Tournament 2 announcement, you might be wondering what to expect from the game. Harada let GamePro in on some information.

* This game will have the largest roster of any Tekken game yet.
* There will be a significant number of returning characters that didn't make the roster in Tekken 6 or Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion.
* Like Tekken Tag, this game exists as a side-story to the main Tekken plot.
* The developer is making some key tweaks to combat to improve on what Tekken 6 contributed to the fighting game genre. In particular, Harada told us to "watch out for" floating mechanics. [Ugh]

Harada lays out what he calls the "Fighting Game Festival" (in order):

TTT2 (Arcade)
SFxTK (Console?)
TTT2 (Console)
TKxSF (Console?)

This books Harada's team for the next two/three years (rumors of a Tekken 7 were misunderstandings, TTT2 was the next Tekken game he meant). This also books Ono-san's team for two years.

So this 'festival' pushes back Darstalkers and Soulcalibur considerably. I can wait, we got good shit in the meantime.

Harada also confirms character customization will be in TKxSF.

Me and Funky got our tekken on tonight.(It wasn't dirty, I swear.)

Started out pretty awful, as neither of us played in over a year. My Devil Jin and Lee were still beastly. Funky's Eddie and Christie were good, and he was killing me with bruce until i busted out law.

Things started to come back to me by the last 4 or 5 matches, and I took them fairly easily. Though I'm sure once funky gets a little more practice we'll be even again.

When Lili is mentioned on Harada's Twitter, he mentions Street Fighter Alpha's Karin. Both similar characters, and a highly random name drop. Harada is a bit more straight forward than Ono and doesn't tease as much. And a Twitter account posting as Sakura asked Harada if she can be in the game, and Harada said she had to fight Poison and Karin first for a position. Harada's dropped Poison's name a few times this week, and appears as weirded out by her gender controversy as we are.

I know, it just seems the biggest cliché right now and a little bored of it. Wish they'd (and by that, I mean all the fighting game companies bar the BlazBlue guys) just get a bit more creative.

Funky Fly

Tekken is loosely grounded in real styles, so it's slim pickings from here on out.

DOA on the 3DS is likely to be limited and probably feature maybe 1 new character. Dunno if it's officially DOA 6, but I don't see a whole lot from these guys in the near future.

Thus far, I'm impressed with Street Fighter's new additions. Very different.

Not been too impressed with the last 2 KoF games. Hopefully 13's got some juice.

MK is MK. We will see, but I'm not holding my breath.

BlazBlue is win.

MvC3 looks like win. Everyone who's played it says it's win. I'm preordering the LE.

No more new SoulCaliburs right? :'(

Just not a fan of VF. :( Dunno why I even have VF5 Online.

The Tekken/SF crossovers have me jizzing in my pants.

Would kill for and SNK/Capcome 3 and Capcom/SNK3.

Especially with Itagaki out. Perhaps some kind of revamp is in order?

Not been too impressed with the last 2 KoF games. Hopefully 13's got some juice.

Had more fun lately with 2002UM than SSF4, but the online portion sucks and there's no color edit. :(

MK is MK. We will see, but I'm not holding my breath.

I have faith, unprecedented faith, for Midway this time.

BlazBlue is win.

Yes.

MvC3 looks like win. Everyone who's played it says it's win. I'm preordering the LE.

Also yes.

Not for a while. There will be another SC. Swords and boobs never get old.

Just not a fan of VF. :( Dunno why I even have VF5 Online.

Weird design overall.

Very excited for those!

Would kill for and SNK/Capcome 3 and Capcom/SNK3.

I think this is also a matter of time, but I believe Capcom should buy SNK or at least their fighting suites and get it over with. 2.5D CvS3 with an updated roster, new models, and a central fighting system (no need for multiple bars :shifty:) and I'd buy it for 80$.

When asked about doing a Jiu Jitsu fighter, Harada explained that they looked into it, but making a fighter like that would not be easy.

Funky Fly
01-04-2011, 10:47 PM
Jiu Jitsu wouldn't work too well in Tekken because it would be 10% stand up and takedown moves and 90% linking moves on the ground.

Not really flashy. I'd love a full drunken style character. Lots of fun with that with Lei.

Funky Fly

Well his Vale Tudo style is basically MMA. If we're talking pure Jiu Jitsu, a character like that would spend more time on the ground than anything else. The only alternative I see is another character with borrowed moves. I'm thinking a fusion of Bruce, Marduk, Steve and Dragunov with some new shit mixed in.

Famitsu actually got a few new bits of info about the game in its latest issue. The magazine details a "Stage Gimmick" system where you'll be able to send your opponent flying though walls, moving the fight to another area of the battle field. This can apparently lead to tag-based combo opportunities, as when your opponent lands, your partner character will be waiting.

TTT2 will also have an item system, something we've come to expect given past Tekken series developments. You'll be able to dress your character up with items. Some of these can be used for attacks. Famitsu mentions a baseball bat and an item called "hammer head" which looks like a hat with a hammer head sticking out of it.

• TTT2′s Character roster is still pegged at 44 (biggest roster yet in Tekken).

• Jun Kazama is mentioned, and once again Harada clarifies that officially Jun was never considered ‘dead’, but ‘missing’.

• Tekken Tag 2′s graphic quality is much better than that of Tekken 6. Improvements include more detail in facial expressions, musculature in character models, shader effects and other extensive treatments (talk about Extreme Makeover!). In terms of polygons used, TTT2 uses 1.5 more than T6 did.

• The version shown in the Taipei Expo is not the latest version (maybe the AOU build) and has some slowdown. The final version will have no slowdown in play.

• The game is about 70-75% complete, but development was delayed due to the recent earthquake.

• Harada reveals that the game may have an Autumn 2011 (October) release for areas outside Japan.

• TTT2′s story is, once again with feeling, non-canon.

• Harada still won’t speak about a console version since the arcade game isn’t out yet, but a home translation is something to look forward to afterwards.

• Progress on SF x Tekken is (to Harada’s estimation) 50%, while Tekken X SF is at 0%(!) since the Tekken devs are concentrating on TTT2.

In an absolute none shocker, lucha lady Jaycee is confirmed to be Julia Chang with a new moveset. Julia used many professional wrestling moves even though she was never a grapple character. Wonder if classic Julia will be in the game, or perhaps her mother will appear with her old moveset.

New update "Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Unlimited" adds 1v1, 1v2 options on top of 2v2. Most likely a rebalance in there for good measure. Most likely the version to head to consoles like Bloodline Rebellion.

- Team options adjust HP, Attack, and Rage settings for a single character against a team of two.
- No adjustments needed for 1v1, essentially Tekken 6.5 going that way.
- Pair Play mode for arcades, 4 plyrs connected. Fairly obvious feature for console release.
- Balance adjustments for several characters as expected. Very buff friendly.

Building upon Tekken Unlimited, the console version of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will also feature new modes such as 1-on-1, 2-on-1, and 2-on-2 matches. With regard to that last one, in Pair Play mode, each of the four characters is controlled by a different player, making for four players in total at the same time. The four characters battle at once in different planes.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 for consoles also has a “Fight Lab” mode for novice and advanced players, which beginners can use to learn the game and advanced players can play against customized bots for various challenges.

There will also be more characters added, which is insane.

Really hope this game has something closer to SCV, as far as earning customization parts goes.

Earning gold took way too long in tekken 6. Never mind the fact that the quickest way to earn it was a horrible, tacked on beat em up mode.

And fuck having to buy the same outfit in different colors. Give me one, and use a god damn slider.

They could (and should) make a separate fully realized Tekken Force game for the arcade/psn that isn't tied to the main series. Pick 5 characters from the Tekken world to play as and throw 5 hidden ones in for good measure. Everyone else is either a cameo, temporary assistant or a boss character.

Apart from the minor issue of a competing system being out by the people who own the franchise.

Fighting Force was supposed to be Streets Of Rage 4, but Sega canned it for being shit and Eidos picked up the pieces. Good move by Sega for me.

FIGHT LAB DETAILS

Harada's brief to his development team: "We want a tutorial, but we don't want it to be called a tutorial. It has to be a series of mini-games where the player doesn't realize that they're learning Tekken - they're enjoying the mini-games as they go along. But then they look back and realize they've gotten better, too."

Fight Lab finds you taking control of Combot - a fighting robot designed by Violet (who is actually Lee Chaolan in disguise). The idea is that you train up the Combot by helping it to complete exercises.

As you progress through Fight Lab's challenges you'll be able to learn iconic special moves that belong to other Tekken characters. "Essentially what this means is you can customize the moveset of your Combot," says director Katsuhiro Harada. "You can have Nina's Blonde Bomb, Paul's Phoenix Smasher and Heihachi's Wind God Fist all in one character." You'll also unlock items that change the look of your bot.

You'll be able to pit your customized Combot against other players online. "Currently we hope to be able to use them in Arcade mode and online play," says Harada. "Obviously there's a problem with ranked matches, but other than that we hope to have other modes available."

One of the first minigames lets you to pull of complex attacks and combos by tapping any button successively; the aim here is to teach players the importance of basic timing. After this prologue sequence, Violet/Lee accidentally destroys the Combot, and you start again with a new unit - and full controls.

The next challenge requires players to perform high, medium and low attacks against incoming henchmen. Initially, this simply demands that you respond to icons that appear over the opponent, and perform the relevant attack. In the subsequent challenge, hitting the incorrect target will result in an explosion that damages the Combot.

These targeting exercises round off with a boss fight against Jack, where the only way to prevent a damaging counter attack is to hit specific parts of his body.

Aside from what was shown, Harada discussed two other mini-game concepts that may show up in the final release. The first is a side-stepping trainer where the player must avoid (or collect) either incoming sushi, or small pandas which roll towards the Combot.

Another "hypothetical idea" is a Juggling tutorial where players must hit Ganryu up into the air and then keep him afloat with successive strikes. With each successful hit Ganryu expands like a beachball, until he eventually pops.

Overall, Fight Lab is designed to train beginners and advanced players alike. Challenges are graded based upon time and efficiency, so skilled players will acquire rewards faster.

Will probably pick up Dragunov again, based solely on his badasss customize options AGAIN.

Will pick up Nina and Law as always.

Kunimitsu being in this is huge for me, as tekken tag is what got me into the franchise on a hardcore level, and she was one of my mains. Have missed her ever since.

I began to learn all of King's throw strings in Tekken 5, but unfortunately didn't get into Tekken 6 enough to continue that character. That will certainly change.

Karate Jin was my main in tekken 4, and I was so nasty with him, that I made someone quit the series forever when I beat all 8 of his fighters in team battle with my Jin. Haven't cared for him in subsequent instalments. I will be the first to admit that he was unbalanced in 4, but they changed him too much for my liking.

After playing funky's bro, I've become more interested in Leo.

Armor King is a character I've always wanted to get better with.

This is the first 3d fighter I've looked forward to in a long time. DOA 4, Tekken 6, and Soul Calibur 4/5 have just kind of been there for me. Just fillers between the next 2d fighters. I don't know if this will pull me away from 2d fighters, but if any 3d fighter can, it's tekken tag.

Harada had a recent interview with GamesRadar about the game and revealed some interesting details.

* Any fears about Tekken going the route of Dead or Alive because of the pre-order swimsuits isn't a concern since it was only meant as a business decision and as part of their plan to offer something interesting to as many groups as possible.

* 2 more character announcements are on its way with one being a fan requested one and the other being one "no one will ever imagine to be in the game."

* Hardcore tournament players have complained the most so far but Harada says the goal is to make the game accessible to everyone which is why certain characters are great for new people to use, others for tournaments in mind, etc.

* Wii U version will have some exclusive goodies but in terms of overall gameplay, nothing huge that would make it seem overtly gimmicky or be seen as the lesser version than the PS3 and Xbox 360 version.

Apparently the Mushroom picture that was seen for the Wii U version which many thought was just a joke might end up being a real mode on the Wii U.

"Usually when we do silly things like this when we promote our games they don't just stay as jokes," said Harada.

"So I'd imagine this Mushroom Mode will probably make an appearance in some way."

When Mario eats a Mega Mushroom in New Super Mario Bros, he grows to a giant size and it seems to have a similar effect in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 as Henhaichi grows.

So Tekken Tunes allows you to fully customize the soundtrack. You can assign songs to each stage, character select, menu, etc. It's a small, but awesome feature.

Now, greyed out in the playlist library are all the ost's from all the previous tekkens. They will be released as dlc, but I'm not sure if it will be free or not, as Harada said only things that affect gameplay will be free, and music doesn't.

That in mind, I thought I would let everyone know about Shadowhaxor.net

It has all the tekken soundtracks, and even some arrange and remix albums. You have to sign up but it's free.

Rip the songs to the xbox and your good to go, as tekken tunes allows custom music.

Here are pictures of all the clothing options for customization. The ones with astericks are the character specific items that are unlocked by getting gold boxes in Ghost Battle. The rest are just generic looking crap that is shared between most of the characters, albeit with different logos in some cases.

Hope they release more of the character specific stuff, because it's WAY better than the generic crossover stuff. Honestly would have rather had the same deal as in Tekken 6, but with the new color slider, rather than have only a few character specific things, and a bunch of boring crap that you can use for everyone. There's a few cool ones, but it's mostly garbage.

I've gotten about 5 gold boxes with Kazuya, but unfortunately it's only unlocked silly add-on items, and not clothing.

How the fuck do you pull off Nina's Twisted Nightmare?

Must of spent 10 minutes inputting the exact combination at various speeds, and nothing.

Same thing with the 3rd part of her other strings. Can get the first link just fine, but after that it drops, even if I get the input in between "hits".

A couple of stuff in regards to the Wii U version in case anyone was interested or was picking up that version.

The Nintendo costumes shown in the recent Wii U trailer are actual costumes in the game and not just something they quickly made for trailer purposes. Also revealed was there are a lot more that will be included than shown in the trailer. However there won't be one based on Kirby although no reason given why.
http://www.destructoid.com/kirby-will-not-make-a-costume-appearance-in-tekken-tag-2-235283.phtml

The other is in regards to the online setup for the Wii U version as the Tekken team is having problems with it although Nintendo is personally helping them at the moment. The netcode works according to them but they can't fully test it until Nintendo is done working on their network nor use any of the special features the Wii U network might have.

Namco revealed their early DLC plans which starts on October 9th and with everything listed being free. The only thing they didn't reveal is the actual dates for each arena and character.

According to Famitsu the DLC will include new characters (Violet, Sebastian, Dr. Bosconovitch, Slim Bob, Miharu, and Unknown) and new arenas set in Russia, Chile, and Saudi Arabia. This content will be split up and released for free on a weekly basis starting from October 9.

I was an absolute monster with Jin in Tekken 4, but he's changed a lot since then. Haven't decided if I want to pick him.

Other characters I'm interested in getting into are Feng, Jun, Leo, Armor King, Jaycee, and Kunimitsu whener she shows up. Hopefully soon.

Haven't even played online yet. Right now I'm just doing ghost mode to unlock everything. Once I do I'll hit up training to get more in depth with character strategies.

FINALLY played this online with kalyx and khuntry and a couple randoms. Couldn't have been more fun.

Kazuya, Lee, and Paul did pretty good, but I was surprised at how some of my other characters did. Specifically Slim Bob, Leo, and the Laws.

Kazuya didn't produce as well as I'd hoped against live opponents, so he may get replaced. Probably between Bob and Lee atm. Lee's rushdown is nasty, but Bob is furiously unpredictable, and a blast to play.

Fucking choked with Zafina. Everything that guy was doing, I know how to do. Every combo and stance transition he did. But I haven't played in a few weeks, and playing Zafina isn't like riding a bike. At least not where I am with her.

Still. I enjoyed smashing HIS Zafina's face in, after the trouble he gave us.

I didn't play Tekken 6 very much. Just dabbled with Zafina a bit.

Like I was saying online, I'm not against comeback mechanics, but they ARE a slippery slope. Ultra's are a case of it being done right.

This rage thing, I dunno. You have to work to hit an Ultra. In TT2 you can hit any old combo, no matter how safe it is, and take half your opponent's life, or more.

I'm not against rage, but it needs more damage scaling.

Do it right after the initial grab, think of it as one long input. That's how I did it in Tekken 3.

This isn't completely accurate.

Was messing with Armor King today, and I noticed the Cobra Clutch > Suplex is done as one long input, but Cobra Clutch > Neck Drop won't work that way. You have to wait a second after the Clutch, and then input neck drop.

Hard enough learning these long strings, but now there's split second timing to learn too? Might have to wait til I get a stick for this one, cause linking this shit on a controller is a bitch.

Had a couple of matches. I'm not that great at Tekken, but I don't think the people I was against have ever played it. Bit of clear mashing going on that I ate up.

Working through a few because holy fuck that's a giant roster. Been doing an Eddie/Paul trip like I did back in Tekken 3. Playing a bit of Raven just because his Captain Falcon costume is perfect. Used to love Jun, but haven't played as her since, you know, her whole dying thing.

Speaking of, whats the deal with the story? Seem to fight Jun in heaven, then some Bint called unknown. Is Unknown Jun corrupted by Kazuyas devil spunk?

Will play a lot more tonight. Because of that GamePad, it's the perfect just before sleep game that I can play in my bed.

The Tag 2 story is non-canon but it's pretty much this:

The Mishima men hate each other; Jinpachi, Heihachi, Kazuya, Jin. Tekken centers around them vying for control of the Devil Gene. Specifically, you'll see Kazuya and his G-Corp versus Jin and his Mishima Zaibatsu at center stage.

The apparent cure for the Devil Gene is the Kazama essence, found in Jun and Asuka. Asuka is Jin long lost cousin though it seems she may well be Jun's daughter and Jin's sister (personal analysis based on Jun's style being her own and only taught to Jin, where would Asuka learn it?).

Unknown is some force greater than the Devil and Kazama essence, or perhaps the true form of the Kazama essence, making it far worse than the Devil Gene actually.

Steve Fox is Nina's son. She mostly doesn't care, and he doesn't know anyway. Nina love/hates her sister Anna. They both work on opposite sides (Nina with Jin and Anna with Kazuya).

Lee/Violet is Heihachi's son and Kazuya's half brother. He also started his own company that creates the Combots. He's comedy. Lars is also a bastard son of Heihachi, but not comedy in any way. He's out to end the whole family war (T6: Bloodline Rebellion).
