View Full Version : CSAC: Sonnen Positive for PEDs at UFC 117

According to California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd, Chael Sonnen has been notified that he failed post-fight drug screening following his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 117, which was held Aug. 7 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif.
“[Sonnen] received his notice yesterday,” Dodd told Sherdog.com shortly after the Shane Mosley-Sergio Mora boxing match ended Saturday night in Los Angeles.
In a conversation the day before, Dodd declined to comment on the situation, other than answering that all fighters from UFC 117 had passed drugs-of-abuse scans, but that the commission was still waiting on performance-enhancing drug screens from the event.
Dodd did not state which banned substance was red-flagged, but with a clean drugs-of-abuse scan it is clear the positive test was for a performance-enhancing substance.
The last major UFC banned-substance case in the state centered on UFC 73’s lightweight title match, which saw both competitors -- Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca -- test positive for PEDs. Both fighters were suspended for one year and fined, though Sherk appealed and had his suspension shortened to six months.
Sonnen is staring at a long layoff if he elects not to appeal or is denied. He was scheduled to rematch Silva Feb. 6 in Las Vegas, but that fight may be delayed or scrapped in light of these allegations.
Text messages to Sonnen went unreturned.
His manager Matt Lindland told Sherdog.com that he was cornering a fighter on the East Coast and had no knowledge of the positive test results.
Silva’s manager Ed Soares, who engaged in some heated exchanges via the media in the build up to the fight, was stunned when asked for his reaction.
“If it’s true, I feel really bad for him,” said Soares. “I know he did it to himself but it is really sad, he put on such a great performance that night. It is just a shame it will be tarnished.”
That will most likely be the end of his rematch with Silva :'(

Yeah, it's gonna be interesting to see what happens now.
If it's true then probably so much pressure to entertain and back-up his talking plus his promise to his dad to become the champ has become his undoing.

What an idiot.
So on top of being a racist big mouth douche bag he's also a cheater?
This is MMA though he'll be back in 6 to 12 months and it'll be like nothing ever happened.... No one cares about steroid use in MMA Stehphan Bonnar, Tim Sylvia, and Sean Sherk all tested positive and no one even brings it up anymore. It doesn't matter that you do roids in MMA unless you're Josh Barnett but then again he did torpedo a whole organization by jucing.

No one gives nearly as much of a shit about any of them now as they did before. In fact, no one has ever given a shit about Tim Sylvia at any point in time at all.
This is really bad for Sonnen. He's gonna end up like the 3 that Show Off mentioned and never reach title contention again. Plus it makes him look like a huge bitch losing to a guy with a busted rib while roided out of your head.

Someone at Rajah posted pictures of his weigh-ins over the past couple of years, with his bulk increasing along with a serious dose of acne taking over his back. That suggests anabolic steroids.

I've heard it was something in a cold medicine, then again it's not the first time that excuse has been used. You would think though with all the shit he talked about Lance Armstrong being a juicer he would never touch steriods.
Also, lets not just focus on Sonnen, though it's easy because he never shuts up, but accoring to guys like Dave Meltzer something like 50% of MMA fighters are on PEDs. Carwin was recently linked to steriods aswell.
Also, Anderson Silva's ribs were fine, I wish everyone would stop spouting his excuse, some of the same people who said Carwin gassing out was just an excuse.

If it was the old cold medicine routine then he would have tested for a stimulant. There's still no excuse for that, it's easy to avoid remedies containing stimulants. Also, stimulants tend to have a fairly short half-life so he would have to have taken them very close to being tested.
If they really want to do something about steroid use, they need to randomly test fighters at their training camps, unannounced. Most cheats will be able to time their steroid use if they know they'll only be tested at or around events.

Who's to say he didn't sustain the injury while being thrashed by Sonnen?
Funky Fly

Considering anyone with eyes could see that Silva wasn't moving the same as he usually does before Chael ever even got close to him, I'd say it's unlikely.
IC Champion
09-20-2010, 04:35 PM
Yeah, well what I want to know is what doctor cleared him to fight then? I mean if the injury was serious enough to warrant a suspension, what was he doing fighting in the first place?
I'm not questioning his actual injury, Im question the timing.
IC Champion
09-20-2010, 04:39 PM
He could have injured his rib in the first 2 minutes of round one for all we know. I'm just saying, for someone who willfully runs away from oppenants for two rounds because he's so cautious, doesn't sound like someone who sucks up a serious injury like that to fight.

Well I can say I enjoy his fights when he actually fights. Then again in some you can't put all the blame on Silva but on the opponent for butt scootin and pretty much avoiding contact with Silva.
But I do always look forward to a Silva fight.

I watched MMA Connected last night and it seems like Dana doesn't care too much about it. Doesn't look like Sonnen will get punished that bad. But the commission on the other hand will be suspending him for 6 months to a year

ufc doesnt really ever punish guys other than letting them go.... theyre not going to be able to do much worse than the commission is going to do anyway.

They rather test them at the night of the fight so they can still make money off of it.

Well, Belfort/Silva should be awesome.
Chaels hearing isn't until Dec. so even if he was cleared, he most likely wouldnt have been able to fight on the new years card.

And according to some guy on MMA live, Chael admitted to taking testosterone before his test to the commisioner, and claimed there was a reason.
Should be interesting to see how things play out.
