View Full Version : What if the 80's WWF World Title scene was more like today's?

Today, we can get up to and past 10 title reigns for a world title in a single year. Back in the 80s (and before) you could go years without one, making title switching very special. There were only 8 different reigns and 5 different champions from 1980 to 1990. From 2000 to 2010, there have been 48 WWE Championship reigns with about 17 different champions. This isn't even counting the World Heavyweight Championship.

If the 80's title scene was more like today, with the title switching hands as often as it can today, would things have been different? Would Hogan have gotten as over as he did without holding the belt as long as he did? Would he have gotten MORE over by chasing the title? Who would have held the title? Who do you think would have been able to shine much brighter than they did in this type of enviornment? Would anyone have been worse off?

Discuss.

Piper definitely would have been a multiple-time world champ, trading with Hogan several times. Macho Man would have gotten some reins in there too.

I blame the amount of title changes on the overcrowded roster. The lack of creativity in the writing department for upstarts. The amount of TV shows & exposure. And lastly the amount of pay per views.

Hogan would still be as over as he was. The title changed hands less because there was more time to be creative and less time on TV/PPV. In todays world, Hogan would be like Cena...Spoonfed to the crowds and forced on us. He would still be over but he would def. have some of the Cena stigma. Not because of time/title reigns but because of the oversaturation.

If that was true then we wouldn't have the anything to look back on as the "good ole days" when the championship wasn't more than a prop.

If it happened in the 80s there would mean a lot of championship title changes in house shows. Mean Gene and Sean Mooney would have to put in overtime to keep us all informed in the WWF Update shows of Superstars and Challenge.

I agree that having the two brands means it is logical to have two world titles. Though I liked the idea at the start of the brand split. The idea was that the WWE Title and the Woman's titles were crossed branded. So, now it seems that they are going back to that idea with the Divas and Tag Team Championship. Also it appears that the plan is to do the same with the WWE title maybe at Wrestlemania.

Though during the Attitude Era there was much more "belt tag" with the all of the titles. It seemed every week there was a new tag team champion with Dudleyz passing the title with Edge/Christian and the Hardy Boyz. That is why the Dudleyz are like a 20 time tag team champion. Attitude era also had way more titles with the European, Lightheavyweight, Hardcore and the WCW titles that they incorporated during the Invasion.

So, it's not like having a lot of titles is anything new and it's alot "better" than it used to be if you think it was a problem to begin with. It might have meant a lot more hot shotting with the titles, but the fans seemed to like that everything was in a constant state of change. There has always been a cry that the titles didn't mean as much as they used to be, but people seem to also have blinders because they can't see that this method was a success in the attitude era.

How about the Title from 90-00?

I don't anything would have changed with Hogan. Winning the title the first time was enough to make him completely untouchable. I don't think the same could be said for others. It's hard to say what would have happened because the fans were different and believed in the shows a lot more, even if they knew it was fake. More title changes probably would have hurt more than done any good because it would have sped up the process of fans beginning to roll their eyes here and there.

Bob Backlund would have only been a transitional champion.

If this was the case, WCW would have beaten WWE and eventually buy them out.

Yes. Vince would have no choice, but to sell the company to Jim Crockett Promotions around 1988.
