View Full Version : HTPC Options...

So I'm thinking about HTPC options. Currently I use my XBox for XBMC and 360 for Netflix streaming. The XBox can't output 720p+ files (I want to be able to keep at least 720p files) and I'm afraid of the RROD with my 360 (have had it once before). I'd use my 360 exclusively, honestly, but the majority of my files are in uncompressed DVD .isos because I'm anal about quality and they obviously don't play on the 360.

I'm still on an SD TV, and likely will be for a while. I was thinking about modding my Wii, but I can't find any information on if it can output 720p files (downscaled, of course).

So, assuming I don't want to build one (which is likely going to be my pick if I can't find a better one) what would be the cheapest/best pre-built unit I could get with the following options:

Being able to output 1080p
Playing stuff like Netflix and Hulu Desktop flawlessly (if my laptop could output Netflix I'd use it but it can't)
Component and/or or S-Video out

Storage isn't really an issue because everything would be streamed from my main box.

For a pre-built HTPC probably a dual core Intel Atom system with Nvidia ION gpu for a few hundred. Or this thing http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136593&cm_re=media_player-_-22-136-593-_-Product

Had no idea that supported Netflix. I've been looking at that on and off. Anyone use it?

Why don't you just buy a couple of long cables for $20 and connect your computer to your TV?

I'd have to get a second graphics card because my current one can only output two screens at a time, and I already use dual monitors.

You could just switch the cables whenever you wanted to watch something on the TV.

What are you looking to buy exactly? A new PC to be your HTPC or just some sort of shitty device that plays videos like Jura posted?

I was going to build a PC as a standalone device, but I think I'll go with that "shitty device" because I don't really need anything else.

From the comments I don't think its compatible with Hulu so if that is a deal breaker you should build a cheap, small pc as a HTPC.

Hulu really isn't a necessity. Netflix was the huge one for me.
