Even though they have a ton even better songs, The Beautiful People/Sweet Dreams/Dope Show are pretty known songs by Marilyn Manson and everytime some noob mentions they like the band its usually one of those 3 songs that are mentioned.

I was making a joke with my post. Those are classic tracks but definitely not loved by everyone.

Also no one likes Marilyn Manson and he should not be mentioned in this, or any other thread.

Bullshit. Who are you to make that outrageous claim? I'll mention them and I will make a thread for them when the time is right.

Joke or not, besides Iggy not a lot of people know the bands you posted and not everybody likes every song/band in this thread. I don't like a number of songs that people mentioned here in this thread but I'm not acting like a dick about it. Marilyn Manson may be my favorite band and they may have a certain "cult fanbase" these days but those songs are pretty timeless and well known despite your opinion on them.

If Enter Sandman (which is hated by most fans of the band) can be here without people bitching, so can The Beautiful People.

I posted those because not a lot of people know who they are in parody of this thread, but they would be considered timeless and extremely influential tracks in some circles.

If you're mentioning Marilyn Manson in that capacity, then it would make sense. However, if you're saying any Marilyn Manson song is timeless, loved by everyone and iconic along the lines of something by The Beatles, Led Zeppelin or Nirvana or whatever then I'd have to say you are sorely mistaken.

I actually only know the bottom 3 bands, never heard of the first two you mentioned.

And of course not any songs just those 3 songs that I mentioned are very well known. Of course they aren't on the same level of popularity as Led Zep and the Beatles. Every time somebody tells me they like a few songs from Manson, it's always one of those 3 and me mentioning that they have better songs and to youtube them.

And the drums for Beautiful People are very well know. And Rob Zombie even covered the Manson version of Sweet Dreams.

Your added point about Enter Sandman is also ridiculous because Metallica is a much bigger and more popular act than Marilyn Manson. I wouldn't put Metallica on a level with the bands I mentioned, but they'd be considered far more timeless than Marilyn Manson.

I personally hate Metallica but their inclusion is far more warranted than Marilyn Manson. I would probably consider Metallica as a band that has stood the test of time, but certainly not one who is loved by everyone because they have A LOT of detractors and aren't exactly "canonized" like some of the acts I have mentioned, however, I can see the basis for their inclusion. There's a ton of metalheads out there who hate on Metallica. If they can't be universally liked (for the most part) in their own genre, I'd say they're disqualified here.

Not to say that there aren't people out there that hate a lot of these tracks. It's kind of a stupid debate in general. If you asked 100 random people on the street, I'd be 50 of them would know "Enter Sandman" and maybe a handful would know "The Beautiful People."

I'm not arguing the merits of either band here, the point is the songs have to have stood the test of time and have to be loved by everyone. Marilyn Manson hasn't done either of those. Maybe for a group of people who like Industrial Metal (wherever those people are), but that's a very small fraction of people.

Shit, if you're going to include Marilyn Manson then I'd have to include The Smiths, Joy Division, The Cure and bands like that because they're timeless for me.

I don't really know if anyone fits this description exactly. Probably The Beatles. Because who the fuck hates The Beatles? If you do you're psychotic.

Wow, a Rob Zombie cover makes a band timeless and loved by everyone? Ok.

Your point is that "The Beautiful People" is a well-known song. I understand that. That's not what's up for debate. The Macarena is a well-known song too. That doesn't make either of them timeless or loved by everyone.

Maybe Rob Zombie will cover the Macarena though. That would be interesting.

Chill man, no need to get hostile. Perhaps Frazor means they arent as much timeless classics as the ones listed above in the thread, but I do agree that they are well known and fairly liked by anyone into the rock/punk/metal scence at all.

Frazor IMHO is more of an indy rock sort of guy, so your preferences seem to clash a bit.

Thats the thing with musical taste, everyone has one and very few are exactly the same, people who like rap/hip hop may not necessarily like metal/rock and vice versa.

Its all about what appeals to you and what you enjoy. Save canned pop (Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Bieber, etc which any person with a few brain cells know is complete shit)

Oh and protip, DMac and myself are two of the biggest Metallica fans on here and both incredibly enjoy Enter Sandman.

So

This is a good comparison of what I stated above, there are some good Manson songs which in a decade or two I would say are considered classics of this generation.

Sweet Dreams while a cover is among the best covers I have ever heard.

Your added point about Enter Sandman is also ridiculous because Metallica is a much bigger and more popular act than Marilyn Manson. I wouldn't put Metallica on a level with the bands I mentioned, but they'd be considered far more timeless than Marilyn Manson.

I just want to say im not a fan of the beatles, not that I hate them, just think they are a bit overrated thats all.

Still have many good songs I enjoy, Strawberry Fields Forever being one of them.

The Cure are pretty timeless, I don't know what their biggest hit was but I'm sure most people who listen to music know them and at least a song or two. Joy Division are timeless as well, they may not be super popular but they're important to music.

I'm not saying Metallica is less qualified, I know that they're probably the most popular "metal" band around even though there's a lot of metal bands who are "more metal" than they are. I'm pretty sure that most metal heads who like the extreme stuff/European stuff don't like Metallica besides probably the older stuff before the black album.

That would be an interesting poll though, how many people would recognize the intro for Enter Sandman vs the intro drums for The Beautiful people. I know Metallica would probably win because they sold a lot more albums, especially The Black Album.

How can you measure everyone though? I can see "most" but not everyone. I know that not as many people like the industrial/glam hard rock style of Manson compared to just regular rock songs but I'd still say that a song like the Beautiful People or the cover of Sweet Dreams are popular.... hell do you know how many movies use the Manson version of Sweet Dreams?

* The song appears in the 2008 horror film Trick 'r Treat.
* The song appears in the trailer for the 2009 science fiction film Gamer.
* The song appears in the 90's horror film House on Haunted Hill.
* The song appears in the teaser for the second season of "True Blood" on FX.
* The song appears in the 1996 Lifetime channel original movie Sweet Dreams.

Timeless isn't the point. The "loved by everyone" aspect is what's excluding bands that you like, like Marilyn Manson, and bands that I like, like Joy Division.

Joy Division is one of the most important bands in rock history but most people don't know who the fuck they are really. I'm talking about your average joe on the street. And your average joe isn't going to get down to Shadowplay anytime soon.

Use in popular culture

"More Than A Feeling" has been featured in a number of films and serials, including:
[edit]Film
When the single was originally released in 1976, a promotion performance video was filmed for the song. The video occasionally plays on The VH1 Classic Network and can be found on YouTube.[7]
The song was featured in the 2008 film Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.
The song can be heard in the 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
The song can be heard in the trailer for and is played in the 2009 film The Men Who Stare at Goats.
[edit]Television
The song has appeared in TV commercials, including on a 1980s ad for Schlitz beer in the UK and a cover version on an Australian Just Jeans ad in 2007. It can be seen on Mediaset Premium pay TV.
The song is featured in the episode "My Half-Acre" of the American sitcom Scrubs, when the Janitor's Air Band "The Cool Cats" performs it at the end of the episode (although Turk can be seen lip syncing the incorrect lyrics).[8]
"More Than A Feeling" appears in The Wire, in the second episode of Season 5 as Jimmy McNulty gets into his car with a flat tire.
Used in Canada for a "Boston Pizza" commercial, with the waitress playing 'Marianne'.
While not actually used in the program, Carl Brutananadilewski, from the show Aqua Teen Hunger Force, references the song, calling it "The Ultimate Song" in the season 3 episode "eDork".
The song is featured during a scene of the 1st season finale of Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory
It was also the background song for a broadcast episode of That 70s Show in which Eric and Donna dance together at their prom.
The song is used in The Sopranos, in the episode House Arrest. The lyric "I closed my eyes and I slipped away" can be heard just before Tony passes out due to an anxiety attack.
It was used in a Castle Lager advert in South Africa, in reference to the Rugby World Cup in South Africa.[1]
It was also used in TV adverts for Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California.
The song was used in Dane Cook's documentary, Tourgasm, which aired on HBO in June 2006.
The song is used in a 2010 Barclaycard advert in the UK.
The song is used in the US in an advert for Mega Millions and Powerball lottery games in 2010.
The song is heard in the opening scenes in the second episode of Cold Case.
Used in promos for Carpoolers on Fox Life.
The song is performed by Shelby Dressel in Season 9 of American Idol.
[edit]Music
The song "Maryanne" by Riot sounds very similar to "More Than a Feeling". The title is also the name of the person in Boston's song.
Comparisons between the song have been made to Nirvana's 1991 hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain even noted the similarity. And during a live performance of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" at the Reading Festival in 1992, Cobain played the riff to "More Than A Feeling" while bassist Krist Novoselic sang before playing "Teen Spirit".
Funeral for a Friend placed the song on their compilation album Back to the Bus, with Matt citing it as a "benchmark...in regards to song writing".
The Presidents of the United States of America have been known to perform a cover of the song live at their concerts, and once had "Weird Al" Yankovic perform the song with them, singing lead vocals and playing the accordion.[9]
While not an actual cover, the main riff for the song "Holy Grail", by Hunters & Collectors is the same as "More than a Feeling"'s chorus riff, except in a different key.
The dance track "Totally Hooked" by DJ Peter Presta contains a sample of "More Than A Feeling".
In the song "Carl's Theme" by Nine Pound Hammer off the Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters Colon the Soundtrack the song is referenced in the line "More Than A Feeling is the world's greatest song."
The song, Trading My Sorrows is more or less the riff in the chorus.
In 1994, Australian Rock group Hoodoo Gurus recorded a tribute titled "Less Than a Feeling" (from their album Crank), which featured a similar riff and guitar solo.
It is also mentioned in Brad Delp's and Barry Goudreau's single Rockin' Away. It was Delp's last new release.
[edit]Video games
In November 2005, a cover of "More Than A Feeling" was included as one of the playable songs in the PlayStation 2 game Guitar Hero and was revisited as a master recording on Guitar Hero: Smash Hits in June 2009, as it was voted as one of the best tracks of original Guitar Hero.[10]
In September 2007, a shorter version the song was featured as a playable track in "SingStar Rock Ballads".
On March 25, 2008, it was released for the game Rock Band as a part of a Boston-themed 6-track downloadable pack that included all of the tracks from their first studio album, except for "Foreplay/Longtime", which was already on disk, and "Let Me Take You Home Tonight". It is available in Rock Band Unplugged as well.
A cover version of "More Than A Feeling" is included in Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol Encore as the first unlockable track.
[edit]Mobile Phones
"More Than A Feeling" is a popular choice as a mobile phone ringtone

That's funny coming from a Metallica fan. Not to mention Metallica ripped off Exodus. And I will say that Marilyn Manson are more original than Metallica. And the band is actually underrated but think whatever you want-ah. :)

To quote somebody from another board-

If I were to describe a 'trademark' Manson sound it would be:

1) Glam inspired drum beats with a few addition percussive elements to really drive home that jack boot feel.
2) Swaggering basslines
3) Punched up guitars, performed quite often as percussion instruments themselves. Fat and layered heavy like hit of the candy crack pipe
4) Quirky, compressed and colorful keyboard counterpoints to all the oppressive elements. While most of the songs sneer at you on one side of the mouth, pogos sound always planted a tongue firmly in the cheek of the other side.
5) Manson's broiling vocals, low and layered verses punctuated by riotus arena rock inspired 'call and response' chorus lines and raunchy falsettos.

But like I said, think whatever you want. I have no need to make this back and forth.
