View Full Version : David Otunga: Yay or Nay?

He was runner up on NXT and is now tag team champ with Cena. The association with Cena is going to get him exposure that may allow him to stand apart from Slater and Gabriel as mere Nexus lackies and WWE seems to be high on the guy. I think after Barrett, he is the most natural on the mic of all the active rookies.

But he is limited in the ring and I'm not sure he'd make a connection with the fans without being in Nexus. Although some people thought being married to Jennifer Hudson would help him get over, I don't think anyone who watches WWE or would watch WWE gives two shits about that.

So what is in the future for the A List? Is he the next break out star for WWE?

I like him as a performer, but I dislike the A-List character.

I don't see him lasting too long.

I don't see anything in him that would warrant main event status. He's a midcard guy at best unless he can prove people wrong during his inevitable push now he's a co-champion. There are better guys in Nexus and season 2 of NXT.

As a member of the Nexus I don't mind him, but that is really as nothing more than a lacky who joins in on beatdowns. As a wrestler, I haven't seen much of him in the ring, but what I have seen hasn't really impressed me.

I see him leaving to go do movies at some point. He's not a guy I see sticking around for the long haul, although he might be able to make a natural transition to the announce table. He's intelligent, well spoken, has that Channel 2 News at 6 look, and does have some wrestling experience. Him and a toned down Stryker with Josh on play by play could be interesting.

I thought he was good on the mic as well. I was wrong. Hes total bollox.

He can't wrestle his way out of a used condom, but he's got solid skills on the mic.

I'd actually like to see him manage at some point, maybe even make up a stable of "A-Listers." Would be much more in line with his character.

The guy's green as f*ck but can really get the crowd to hate him just with his personality. It doesn't warrant a tag title reign but what are you gonna do?

Brought up to early for the Nexus angle, once his wrestling skills develop properly he will be a decent all around wrestler.

Agrred 100%... I have hated this guy from the start and can only guess that Vinny Mac keeps him around because of his size... Because he has nothing else going for him... Horrible on the mic and dangerous in the ring... His finisher looks like he's going to really hurt someone...

That's not true...

Vinny Mac also keeps him around because of who he's sleeping with.

The only thing he has going for him is the fact that he isn't injured. I would take Sheffield over him. Sheff's work is stiff looking. Otunga's is Dangerous-looking.

Probably the worst of the Nexus guys, he can't work a match at all. I still hate Heath Slater more than him though, plus he's mildy amusing when he has his shitty little plans and thinks hes second in command.

Barrett > Skip > Gabriel > Tarver > Otunga > Young > Slater.

Overall, its a nay from me.

He has about as much charisma as a plank of wood, i think a plank of wood would have a better range of moves as well...

Can't stand him. Should have made Gabriel tag with Cena. Play up the fact that Gabriel has done the 450 splash like seven times to Cena.

Sucks all around. I hated listening to Bobby Lashley talk, but this guy makes me want to find Lashley and ask him to read me the phonebook. Then hit me in the face.

Big Zeke came back and took his finisher back, Otunga is officially finisher-less as of now. But the way he used to execute it, that is pretty much a good thing.

he showed his potential as a future main event player when he was RAW Guest Host that one time. He had "it"

His movements are so stiff because he's musclebound, he doesn't have a lick of athletic ability, and the voice doesn't match the image he's trying to portray.

Actually liked him better when he was on NXT, carving stupid star designs into his hair and wearing the glitzy sunglasses. At least then he had an identity. Now he's just the guy getting openly mocked by the announcers for jumping on the pile.

Yea, Skippy is overall much better than Otunga. If they were gonna take anyone from I love New York they should have taken that big guy Buddha, or that manscaping guy :shifty:

David Otunga can probably grow into a great persona and a great talent over time. The guy seems to really want to be a wrestler, he's got a look, he's sleeping with an Academy Award winner, and he's intelligent and well-spoken (if not exactly a great promo). The guy's only problem is that he is far too green. But I hope for a journey of improvement like we've seen with The Miz.

It makes sense that they label him as the second-in-command of the group, since he was NXT runner-up. But I think he should step more into a manager sort of role for the group, while he is training, and only be used for the occasion match here and there, or for big clusterfuck tags. As someone said, Justin Gabriel is the next-best to Barrett in terms of overall ability, and he should have been given the Tag Team Titles with Cena. But after RAW, I guess they just want to pad the resumes of the Nexus guys.

In terms of ability, I'd put Otunga right at the bottom of the current Nexus guys. It's obvious the WWE wants him to be a star, though. He's nowhere near ready for that.

I do hate Otunga's Spinebuster.

Although, as I saw mentioned in the RAW thread, I would not entirely be opposed to seeing Otunga eventually split from Wade Barrett and lead consisting of booted Nexus members against the current crop. Wade Barrett, Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater, Michael McGillicutty & Husky Harris against David Otunga, Darren Young, Skip Sheffield, Michael Tarver, and fuck it, even Daniel Bryan?

I like the idea, but it would seem anticlimatic to have the Nexus simply implode rather than have Team WWE, or even just Cena, break up and exile them.

Also, including Daniel Bryan would imply that he still cares about the Nexus. If one thing has been consistent about the American Dragon since he was rehired, it's that he no longer has any connection to the Nexus. He's now his own man, and doing very well at it.

How long has he actually been wrestling for? Wiki says his debut was on 29 May 2009...
