Actually, I'm cool with this. Kal-el needed a reboot. Hopefully this works better than electric superman...I hated that incarnation.

While I can see why that look might be thought of as emo, its stupid to do so. A hoodie and messy hair have been around before "emo" became some style to market from.
And it isn't a change in the regular DC universe, its just some alternate take based on a alternative Earth...one of DCs 52 Earths.

I read it, and elements of it I really liked... mainly to do with the Daily Planet, and Krypton...
Other elements I didn't like... and yeah... one of those elements was that Superman was a bit too "emo" for the first half of it. Didn't feel like Superman. I get that he is isolated because of his powers, but Superman: Birthright did that already without making him a non-smiling douche for half the thing.
On the whole, though, it caught my interest and I am for sure interested in the sequel, which will probably be ten times better due to him having embraced his role as Superman/his ability to smile.

Anyway, people getting upset over the "emo" look is pretty damn stupid, since he doesn't even wear that outfit when he's Superman (according to the writers and artist, the heavy jacket and hood and stuff are part of his Clark Kent disguise, to cover up his muscles). It's one goddamn picture on the cover of the comic, and everyone just assumes that's what he wears through the whole thing. Not to mention Superman's been doing the angsty teenager thing for about ten years on Smallville, and nobody's complained. This isn't another ridiculous overhaul like Electric Blue Supes; it's his out-of-costume appearance in an alternate-timeline comic.
As for if he's written to act more "emo" than usual, I can't honestly give an opinion on it yet. I haven't read the Earth-1 story yet, mainly because I've been wary about everything J Michael Straczynski has written since his run on Spider-Man. But I've heard good things about it, and to be honest I've really been wanting a revised version of Big Blue that would fit into a movie or TV series, so I'm going to give this a shot when I get the chance.
Also, this is what Superman actually looks like in the comic:
