View Full Version : Since Linda McMahon lost and John Cena is turning heel, is PG over?

TheAdamEvansFan

Linda McMahon lost.

John Cena is turning heel.

TNA is starting to pick up some power.

Will WWE take on their rival to give TNA some much needed respect? Will WWE try to launch a new war by going back to pleasure their male base?

With a possible Rock showing, Austin showing, etc. Could WWE be going back to the Attitude Era (Orton, Rappin Cena, Sheamus, Trips, Nexus) style to bring in a new era?

Tell us why you feel it'd be wise or bad for the WWE to get back to a revised Attitude Era with their current rising stars.

We can only hope they drop TV PG, but WWE isn't "beating" TNA anytime soon.

LOL Being PG is not what's hurting WWE. Going back to TV-14 (or whatever the rating was in the Attitude Era) isn't going to solve anything. And like someone implied, they have sponsorships with companies like Mattel that are way too lucrative to give up.

It's all about developing engaging storylines and characters. You don't need to be TV-14 to do that. There was some pretty intriguing wrestling shows before 1997, you know.

I was actually going to make a thread about the attitude era later. I think the thing that people forget, was apart from the more 'edgier' storylines it was the character evolution that defined the era.

For example we had Hunter Hearst Helmsley turn into HHH, The Roadie into the Road Dogg, Rockabilly into Badd Ass Billy Gunn, The Ringmaster into Stone Cold, Rocky Maivia into The Rock etc.

With todays characters I honestly don't believe you could have the same transformations with the same effect. And the reason for that is that we have become too smart. It was easy when we were younger to accept a jobber becoming something better, but if we were all honest we'd struggle to do it now and bitch and moan how *insert name here* has been jobbing for 3 years, now we're meant to take them as a threat. Kane is a perfect example for that.

But yeah, pretty sure I'm dribbling shit now and not making sense. Maybe I should have just done my own thread for disscussion. But whatever.

Doesn't matter if overnight WWE went from PG to TV-14 or rated R if the writing and booking is still inconsistent and mainly full of Nickelodeon and regular TV show style writers.

Linda might have been one of the reasons they went to PG but not because she was running for Congress. She was involved in local politics years before considering running for Congress in Connecticut.

As funny as so many of you find the theory on the relationship between WWE-PG and the McMahon Senate Race to be, I find it equally funny that you are all so unsusceptible to the idea when, thought out and processed logically, it makes perfect sense. An immediate problem with the idea for running for Senate for Linda McMahon is being forever and always associated with the WWE; a company that, though very successful, does not have the highest standing on capitol hill. So what's the best she can do? She can't disassociate herself from the product - it's almost like one of her children. So what do you do with the bad child that might ruin the election? The one with social problems who your opponent could point out as a sign that you, Linda, cannot raise a child and thus should not be a Senator. What do you do? You dress him up. You parade him around behind you like a good little boy with his combed and parted hair and his nice sweaters and his cute little suits. And you pretend to the press that he didn't REALLY set his school on fire four years ago... he's a good little boy? See? Look how good he is?

If you REALLY think it's SO far-fetched that the WWE would try and turn its image around from giving violence, sex, anger, blood and profanity to punk teenagers into providing a TV-PG rated show for tweens that's safe for your 10 year old to watch on Monday night without parental supervision for the sake of Linda McMahon's campaign for the United States Senate, then snap the fuck out of it. FAR MORE EXTREME things have happened in history for the sake of a political career than turning WWE from TV-14 to TV-PG. Think about it, people. Examine the situation with an open mind and stop just believing what you're told or only accepting what you see on the surface of a situation. Think deeper.

Ill see you here after he turns at Survivor Series and you can gobble up those delicious words. At SS Cena wont be getting 'fired' which means Barrett is gonna walk out World Champion (The belt will change hands so Barrett can hold it and drop it at Mania) No matter what happens at the finish Cena will have to count the 3 which means Orton is gonna wanna tear him apart the next night. Orton is the top face on Raw right now which leaves Cena to play the heel as Nexus help him beat Orton.

Umm, because the WWE is a business, and even years ago they were losing sponsor after sponsor because of the vulgar, violent, lewd program they were putting out that companies wanted nothing to do with? Because the WWE wanted to actually get companies to spend their marketing dollars on the WWE again? I seem to remember the WWE lamenting the loss of ad revenue and sponsors for quite a while. Are you serious? I mean really do you believe what your saying? Orton is 'a' top face but Cena even as a member of Nexus is still 'the' top face of the WWE. If he screws Orton people will still cheer him over Orton and by people I mean the kids and women. Also I'm more or less expecting Cena to get 'fired' and through some crazy loophole or GM decision come back and take out Barrette after a short hiatis. WWE will never let Cena turn heel because in the end no one and I mean no one will be able to replace him as far a being a money maker, not Orton, not HHH, not Mysterio (althow he would probably come closest), not anyone.

Well at least harming your genitals will do the entire race a solid if you can't produce children. Now to pwn you and all these Linda is the reason for the final time.

WWE has very little control in the time of advertising that comes on the TV station. That is done by USA Networks and the WWE doesn't get a very large cut of it anymore. They wanted to get back on USA so they took a deal with less perks like that.

So, WWE needed to gain more revenue outside of just television. So, they made an effort to court more investors in their product in both print, store fronts and in toys. WWE lost Pepsi during the Attitude era because of reports made by the ParentsTVCouncil. Now they have Mattel producing their toys and Pepsi Cola is funding their 7/11 store for two consecutive Summerslam Cup deal. The last time they had a cup deal Booker T was pissed off that RVD had a cup and then Goldust freaked Booker out by eating his wiener.

The ratings they got made it possible for them to get a great deal on Spike TV with huge profits from the television ad revenue. WWE ratings lowered so they were not able to get that type of deal in 2005 with NBC Universal.

The one thing I'm not seeing discussed as much in regards to the PG business is the MMA influence. As much as he has his head up his ass on a number of issues, Jim Cornette was definitely on the mark when he said that a lot of the PG business has to do with MMA; while I'm not saying that it's solely responsible, it's a fairly logical thing to conclude that the demographic that made the Attitude Era so popular was largely drawn in by the sight of guy really beating the hell out of each other. That was a draw that reached a high point in Steve Austin. Now that UFC et al are far more accessible than they were in that day, it makes some sense that someone who wants to watch that kind of physical action is going to be more likely to watch guys doing it for real than in a worked environment. It's risky to chase a demographic that may already be trending in a different direction. Much as they did in the 80s, WWE is banking on the family audience as one that they can bring in and hang on to in order to replace the audience they've lost in the past few years.

It's weird seeing Tedious say something remotely sane.

I love you too.

WWE went PG way before returning to USA. They were PG oriented on TNN, but didn't have Cena as a main product.

As a Poli Sci Major, I love those idiot trolls who say Linda McMahon didnt turn WWE because of her political ambitions. GET REAL TRAILER TRASH.

It's obvious the McMahons have a dominant agenda acros s the board.
- Vince unsuccessfully to launch XFL.
- Linda unsuccessfully to Senate.
- Shane focusing on becoming a main player in other dominant and important companies.
- Steph & Triple H slowly taking the reigns.

It's been in the works for a decade now.

Cena will turn HEEL and he will have a mixed review like Triple H has managed. Kids might get their parents to purchase merchandise of Cena's, but if the adults are tired of seeing Cena and his predictible storylines, then they will stop purchasing PPVs.

It appears as if WCW was focused on the children in the 90s and WWF was focused on Attitude Era loving teens and young adults.

However, today, it appears TNA and WWE (ironically both companies with new names but same staffing) have switched audience bases. TNA appeals to teens and young adults (even bringing in middle aged adults due to the oldschool wrestlers) while WWE focuses on WWECares and other children type promotions for the children base. Oddly though, their pro youth push of advertising and promos was around Election Time to sell to the people that they are pro family.

I expect that to change as Vince will want to make a statement and not be swayed to stay the PG course after Linda was rejected her seat.

He will go back to what he knows, being controversial and edgy, not watered down and censored.

lol, this thread is awful. WWE went PG to try and salvage the ratings they used to receive by switching demographics. They needed a fresh approach because, plain and simple, they weren't drawing the same numbers with the old approach any more. That is how I see it anyways.

Also, lol @ wishbone thinking Mysterio is the only person capable of approaching Cenas' popularity as a face. That is some of the most laughable bullshit I have ever heard. Mysterio is a top face, no doubt, but Orton can definitely draw better at this time. So could Edge, or Taker. Hell, a returning HHH as a face would completely and utterly obliterate the pops Mysterio would get.

Mysterio has had a great career, but even you must realize that at some point, a character does begin to decline from the peak of their career, and Mysterio is on the back stretch of his career, IMO.
