there's never been a legit reason mentioned as to why. But just from what I've heard from the more reliable sources over the years and to what actually makes sense; Savage was suppossed to be Vince's "Babe Ruth" type figure for years to come. Meaning he was the guy that was going to be sort of a spokesperson type figurehead during those years. He would be utilized to get talent over and out of the ring as well (commercials, apprearences etc....).
But Savage still wanted to wrestle full time. I believe what happened was WCW came in and offered Savage a huge contract. Either Savage never told Vince about this and signed or he tried to get Vince to match and he couldn't. But never the less, Vince felt betrayed by Savage for jumping ship and that's what I believe the heat has always been for.
Now while this scenerio seems the most simple,*there could be more to why Savage left and why McMahon hates him now. One*rumor has it*that when Vince was on trial for the steroid scandal, he was losing sponsors left and right. One of those sponsors was Slim Jim and as we all know Macho Man is very well know for doing his*Slim Jim commercials. When Macho*went to WCW Slim Jim moved their advertising along with Randy and aired Slim Jim commericals*during*WCW's shows instead*which cost Vince*loads of money in ad revenue he desperately needed at the time. As a result some say that this is why Vince hates Macho Man.
Dave Meltzer has said that he thinks the Stephanie rumour is true though.

i think it's more to do with the "i got one more run left as a wrestler, put me in the ring more or someone else will" thing.

I don't buy that it's because he went to WCW. Vince wished him an on-air farewell after he left.
Here is The Genius alluding to the fact that he thinks the Steph rumor is true:

The farewell was only McMahon being polite, bet he did daggers in the inside.

Vince McMahon doesn't strike me as a polite man.

I see him as a "you got to be cruel to be kind" person or "it takes a lot to impress him" person and he only used the farewell for the fans, not for the company and Savage himself.

I never beleived the Savage/Stephanie rumor for a second. The fact that Lanny Poffo won't dismiss it out of hand though puts some cracks in that resolve.
Also, Angelo Poffo looks like a cross between Savage and Heenan in that photo.

I guess Vince really loved Slim Jims a bit too much back in the day :shifty:

Yeah, I don't know if I believe it the way it is. I would say she just blew him.

Now that is more believable than the "Sex with Stephanie" rumor. That Stephanie rumor is like "The Ultimate Warrior is dead" rumor when Warrior returned briefly in 1992, it turned out to be false.
