View Full Version : What video games will make the best movies?

I think it's very likely that the video game industry will finally cross-over into quality movies.
Just like comic movies, the trend will probably come on strong and spread like wild fire through Hollywood over a decade or so.
They're running low on comics to adapt, and I think they'll tap into video games soon. The fans will be there, just like with the comic craze.
Plus they'll get respect. Comics were seen as disposable entertainment for a long time, and so were their few and poorly made films.
Halo will probably be the first huge hit that will kickstart the trend, if done right. It's just a matter of time.
But what games do you think will/can make good films?

Uncharted
Mass Effect
COD
And a Team Fortress HBO series. Maybe AMC.

It's obvious that it's going to require the studios to take this stuff seriously.
Quality directors and screenwriters, good casts and large budgets. Emphasis on characterization and stories, and not just getting the action on screen.

The 2 Modern Warfare stories could be made into films. A condensed version of Vice City could be fun with all of the retro schtick, be even better if they kept the place names the same/incorporated the humour/didn't try and make it 'straight laced' etc. Always loved Broken Sword and there's ready made sequels there also. They could all turn out horrible of course, would depend who's involved I guess. Max Payne :(

I think BioShock and Gears of War will be big hits down the line. But I think Halo will have to hit first for studios to put the proper money into them.

I think once the video game movie craze starts, and all of the studios jump on board, they will eventually develop a huge budget Zelda movie.
Dunno how that will turn out, but it will probably have potential to be the crown jewel of the genre.

Call of Duty series might be the easiest to make on the screen since movie viewers love action films and its been proven to be popular as a mini-series on tv or on the big screen.
Biggest problem is almost no Hollywood studio actually works with a gaming company during a film. The end result is the studio buys the license to use the franchise and then the director puts their own story or direction into the film when it is not really needed.

Nintendo went on record saying there will never be a Zelda movie, not after Mario. I honestly believe there's a director out there who could bring Zelda to life, but I can understand why Nintendo would want to protect Zelda from Hollywood. One day...
Tone down the zaniness and put more weight on the background mythology, and Devil May Cry can be very Hollywood friendly.
Street Fighter needs another shot, I would like to write it personally.
Guitar Hero, with Jack Black attached.
And Brutal Legend for that matter.
I don't trust Hollywood with something like Halo. Even if the writer and director are die hard fans, I expect studios to do something to put a stamp on the franchise. Something like self sabotage, it's hard to explain. But the issue between Fox and Paramount adds to my thoughts.
Some posters here said it was redundant, but I still believe a Metal Gear Solid movie would work. It has so many elements people dig these days, and it's not like they have to stuff one movie with the whole mythology. I'd just cherry pick the most accessible elements. Though I'd call it Metal Gear Solid, I'd have it based on the events of the first game - not the Shadow Moses incident.

Jeritron

I wouldn't worry about something like Halo translating to film. It could be done. It just has to be the right person.
Peter Jackson and Neil Blommkamp were exciting, but that's gone now. James Cameron would also direct the shit out of it, but I doubt he'd do it at this juncture.
I dunno about the others. I don't think any video game worth adapting is unable to be adapted right, as long as it's approached correctly.
There are certain games that I feel are pointless to adapt though. For instance, GTA or DeadRising.
They're mainly inspired and derived from existing mob and zombie movies respectively. So it's like a movie adaptation of a video-game adaptation of movies. Too deluded.

Like Inception?
But seriously, I think Nolan would be great for that. There are a number of directors who could do something like that.
If you're looking for that Bond style, why not go directly to the source with Martin Campbell?

I had Inception in mind yeah, just with "Nick Fury" (Solid Snake) in the mix. Black ops mission, sneaking around.. ect
How about Devil May Cry?
Jeritron
11-19-2010, 01:55 AM
Oh, a Metroid movie would be incredible.
I can see why Nintendo doesn't want to have their games adapted anymore, but I think Mario and Zelda/Metroid are way different beasts.
The latter two are way more cinematic and favorable to being movies. Especially nowadays. Like anything else, it just needs to be done correctly, but I'm fully confident that a Zelda or Metroid movie could work.
I don't think a Mario movie ever could, unless it was fully animated and even still I don't think so. So I think it's short-sighted to put the kibosh on Zelda/Metroid because Mario was a disaster.

Devil May Cry needs to use Sparda's legend as a base and focus on the character of Dante. Trish needs to be in there once again as a double agent for demons like DMC1, but dare I say Mundus shouldn't be the antagonist in the first film. Need someone or something smaller scale.
Emphasis on action, but with a sense of slapstick. Dante needs to be the only guy seemingly not taking the situation seriously. It would be interesting on screen for the guy who treats the situation 'like a game' to also be the only one capable of facing the threat.
Our writers will want to, but I'd strongly suggest avoiding the temptation of making Dante angsty about his dual lineage. He doesn't sit and brood about being a half demon, no more than people brood about being half Irish or whatever. That major detail should be something else Dante is nonchalant about until later in the film.
I can go on all day about translating DMC on screen for a broad audience. Don't have a director in mind, though.

It would be awesome if they kept Samus being a chick a secret until the end of the movie.
Kalyx triaD
11-19-2010, 02:11 AM
That would be very hard to do. She would have to be silent or at least mask her voice. Not to mention not appearing in any compacity at all during the show, which may turn off actresses. Perhaps some clever way of making Samus seem like she's working with an armored partner or something.
Jeritron
11-19-2010, 02:33 AM
It wouldn't have to be that clever. You could have a voice that is asexual or masculine, since it's coming through a suit. They don't have to match the game voice exactly.
You could also have the character in the suit the whole time, and only tease seeing her without the mask in a way like they did with Darth Vader in Empire Strikes Back.
I don't think it would be as hard to pull off as you think. Whatever actress it ended up being wouldn't even have to play the role the whole time if she didn't want to.
That's for a body actor in a suit. Even a male could do it.
Uncostumed characters could carry a lot of the load in the story.
It's obvious that they made the character seem masculine before the reveal. Her femininity started showing through more in the sequels, but that was after everyone knew the reveal. It wasn't there at all in the first.
It should be the same in a movie series.

I still sorta forget Samus is a female sometimes, while playing the Metroid games or Smash Bros.
It's not like I think she's a male, since I know, but I sort of just subconsciously think it's a dude until I remember.

Word. I was just reading that the film rights were optioned, but it's now a dormant project.
Naturally it will regain steam if and when a video game movie renaissance begins. Either way, it seems to be that Nintendo is okay with seeing this one turned into a movie.
I wish I still had my GameCube. I want to play the Metroid Prime games and Smash Bros. so bad right now.
Maybe I should buy a Wii soon. Then I can play all the new Wii games I haven't played, and re-visit some GameCube gems.

Zombies or no zombies is a red herring argument. Those movies suck, as far as I've seen. Last one I saw was the one with crows.

Agreed.
Yet, somehow I finished watching the previous movies (even the one with Nemesis suddenly remembering the good ol' days and helping the bitch, which was ridiculous). This one I just couldn't. Stupid shit since the very beginning.

It seems like a lot of the trouble they've had with video game movies has to do with the inability to reconcile gameplay into plot. With Super Mario Bros. you basically do the same thing over and over until you save the princess. It's fun as a game, but as a movie it isn't, and so that leaves writers who have never played the game to fill in the gaps. And it came out bad.
A game movie will need to draw enough from the source to still qualify it as a game movie, but not be so specific that it only makes sense to people who have played the game. It also has to be a complete story in around two hours. That's a tricky balance because you don't want to leave your core audience feeling left out.
Final Fantasy was an okay movie. I hated it at the time because it just had so much build that there was no way it could be that good. But watching it later I thought it was okay. Some franchises might do well to follow that strategy of releasing a stand alone film. GTA would obviously be suited for this.

XenoGears could make an awesome movie. Playing it feels like Star Wars. It has probably the craziest and most in-depth story of any book, movie, or game I have ever played. But it would probably have to be in some sort of trilogy like Star Wars also.

Shadow of the Colossus would make for a suitably epic film (and I mean epic in the proper sense, not 'epic' as a stand-in for 'pretty cool') Or preferably as a mini-series so each episode is a different fight, rather than just trying to shove all sixteen fights into a 2-hour feature.

I know they're in the process of making a Warcraft movie, you tend to have high hopes for it considering the lore behind the years of the WoW universe... But it will no doubt get to the point where the directors will want to sway away from the lore to make their own minds up..
