View Full Version : Don't mention "faces" or "heels" in front of Flair

From the TPWW.net front page:
Ric Flair did an interesting interview with Silvervision (WWE’s merchandising arm) in the UK. In it, he was asked whether he preferred to be a heel or a face and he took issue with the interviewer using insider terminology. When asked why, he said, “Well fans who use terms like that I have no respect for, because they're not wrestlers. That's a wrestlers terminology. See that's inside talk - I don't like outsiders using inside talk - I have no respect for it whatsoever. Everybody wants to think that they're a wrestler. The guy who wrote my book the first time, I'd go on record as saying is a *%$^£&$ idiot - it had to be re-written. He took everything I said and wrote it like he was on the inside. He will go down in history and I will make sure he does, as the biggest idiot ever be given an opportunity and completely ^%$& it up, 'cos he talked like he was on the inside. You know fans want to talk to us using our terminology and it's a lot of our guys faults, cos they want to talk to the fans and get their opinions. They want to talk to them like they're on the inside. So that's why I'm asking you why you said that, but it's ok, you're asking me questions the fans have asked. I do have a lot of respect for the fans but I don't like the fans who think they can talk like they're on the inside, cos they're not. We've got too many guys in our businesses that rely on the opinion of some fan who thinks he's smart - it's a real issue for me.”

You know, coupled with his remarks about Foley, Flair is really starting to irk me.
flair sounds like a bitter man now, so now we can't call wrestlers heels we have been doing that since the 50's

I think Flair's getting senile. Wait... the airplane ride from Hell.... Flair lost it awhile back.

To be fair, Nat was probably drunk. He has a tendancy to get drunk, as he showcased when he did a local radio show 3 or 4 years back. You could smell it on him the second he walked in.

He's just a bitter angry old man. He talks about fans breaking kayfabe by using inside terms, yet the WWE spent three season destroying kayfabe with Tough Enough, had a behind-the-scenes show like Confidential, and has run countless angles & stories based around real life parts of their workers' characters.
It's 2004 not 1974, he needs to get over it.

I'm probably in the minority, but I don't really have a problem with the destruction of kayfabe.

LOL, that's pretty funny, I've seen like two JR interviews where he's said face and heel like all the time when speaking to "Outsiders." I think Flair should tell him to shut up.

Even in the recent videogames, it refers to them as faces and heels. In Legends of Wrestling 2, the difficulty settings are Jobber (easy), Midcarder (normal) and Legend (hard).
Get over yourself, Flair.
WOW
That excerpt brings Flair down to Bradshaw's level of shoot interviews, seriously.

He did that on a old radio show a few years ago called "rasslin radio".
They asked him if he liked being a face or a heel and he said "I don't know what you are talking about."
I think I was listening to this interview. It was on Thursday of last week.

Geez, I wish somebody would slap that man. As much as a fan as I am of his, he needs to realize that the fans made him the star he is, and they have a right to say whatever they want.
<s>I thought I'd never say this but</s> Flair, PLEASE STFU.

I love how wrestlers on the "inside" try to act like they are on the "outside" when telling us what matches we should like and the matches we shouldn't like! And then how were bad, uneducated fans for liking the matches we shouldn't like (example high spot matches). But how they bash us when we do educate ourselves on what goes on..... main point = **** you Flair

Yeah, it's been that way for quite some time.
They're not "insider terms" and haven't been for quite some time.
Then again, he's wrestling pretty poorly and going after Foley as well, so...

Theories: He's trying to make a more believable heel.
He's trying to get further into HHH's pants.

He just thinks we shouldn't use them because it is acting like we know what is going on, when he feels that we don't.
He's not blaming us, he never said that.
In that particular interview, Ric Flair was being an unreasonable bastard. He gets all pissy when an interviewer uses the terms "face" and "heel," terms that were used in the WWE's own Smackdown video game, and tries to make it seem like wrestling fans don't know anything. Basically, he's trying to make us stupider than we are. He's telling us to be completely ignorant towards the wrestling business that, despite his opinion, some of us may actually know something about.
But of course, why argue with you? You've made it a point to disagree with every majority opinion on this message board. Why should this be any different?

The really sad part is that it was the "smarks" who made him the popular wrestler he is today. Back in his prime, the marks cheered for Hogan. Flair finally got his widespread due in the late 90's/early 2000's, but it was the smarks who kept his legend alive.

Well, he'd be a piss-poor troll if he failed to illicit a response by diametrically opposing people...
But you're bang-on.
Unless playing a wrestling video game either makes you a "smark" or an "insider." sorry, but on Smackdown, you use a sliding sccale to decide of your CAWs (sorry for the insider term) are "face" or "heel." You choose people for "face" or "heel" roles in season mode. How exactly is this insider info?

To be fair, Ric Flair is totally unaware of video gmes. He only recently stopped believing that having his picture taken meant someone was trying to "steal his soul."
And is it just me, or does this Ric Flair as an angry, paranoid, Grandpa from 'The Simpsons' type character thing have legs?
Flair: Back in my day, this whippersnapper Shelton Benjamin wouldn't be leapin' and jumpin' all over the place. Why, back then, we wrestled with bricks tied around our feet and got paid in mush. the crowd threw old rusty nails..and that's if they liked you. And all our matches ended on a 4 count cuz nobody had invented the number three yet...flin flarn kids..grmmbllmgrmmbl..AND WE LIKED IT!
After like a month of that nobody could blame Orton and Batista for turning.

Ric Flair doesn't like the CAW system either, cause it makes people feel like they're better wrestlers than him. :shifty:

Odd... in a recent interview Flair had this to say:
"Back in my time we didn't do a lot of that high-flying kerflubble. Gravity hadn't been invented yet, you see, so we had to be careful to keep our feet on the mat. Of course back then the mat was a sheet of metal, not like that sissy canvas they use now, and we had magnets in our shoes to hold us down, because it was the style at the time. That's why the dropkick used to be such a devestating maneuver. To this day I can't climb the ropes properly because of it. There was no internet back in them days, but we still had little whippersnappers running their mouths off. Horace Metzler, great great grandfather of that little Dave bastard, he used to hide under the ring with a can on a string and call in results to the telegraph office, where they'd wire the "spoilers," like they call them, and the next day they'd be reading them off scraps of bark they'd scratch on with twigs, because it was the style at the time."

I understand what Flair was saying. There are people on the internet who think they know more than the wrestlers do, and it can be very annoying. Maybe he's tired of people who know jack crap talking as if they do. I think that's his point.
But c'mon Naitch, lighten up. Okay fellow posters, I guess we have to say "good guys" and "bad guys" now, because "heel" and "face" is a little too much for Mr. Flair. So what if we're huge fans? So what if we spend a lot of money on the industry that lets Flair put food on his table? That doesn't matter. :-\
