View Full Version : Are you satisfied on how they handled the Orton/Cena rivalry?

In 2004, the epic dream match that was to be considered the next Austin vs. Rock rivalry was John Cena vs. Randy Orton. Cena was the US Champ, and Orton was the young buck of Evolution.

I recall reading these forums in 2004, everyone was salivating over the thought of Orton vs. Cena. They teased this in the RAW tribute to Eddie Guerrero, but that wasn't an official program Just a one-off match.

Eventually they faced at SummerSlam, this was the time they got Cena's father involved. And then a handful of other confrontation would soon follow. A Hell In A Cell match, an I Quit match, an Ironman Match. They did it all. But I recall Funky Fly and Thrilla saying that it was overkill. They were tried of seeing the same Orton vs. Cena program

So do you think it ended up being the epic rivalry that Austin/Rock was supposed to be, or do you think it felt it was prematurely blown off without proper build. Was it overkill? Should've they both of been babyfaces? Most of the time Orton was the heel. Although nowadays, Orton is a face, and Cena is a face, so next time they meet, it will have that "epic" feel to it.

Let me fill you in,

They rushed it when they got to it. Right when they got together the started wrestling, no meaning to the feud no nothing. Just over the title. Then they got Cenas father invovled...ok. but they should have built it up slower than that it instead of just getting these guys together one on one right away.

You know you can read wikipedia and old threads to catch up on the years of wrestling you missed, right?

Besides the fact the feud dragged on a bit too long, the reason Rock vs Austin worked was due to The Rock being booked to be as strong and equal to Austin regardless of which wrestler had the upper hand each week.

Cena was booked too strong and Orton was booked too inconsistent since any momentum Orton gained was gone with Cena always "over coming the odds". They also used up too many gimmick matches to artificially lengthen the feud over the year.

I remember thinking they should have held off a lot longer, and build it up proper.

Also remember that one smackdown game trailer that teased orton vs cena, and marking out for it.

The fued had it's moments, but sadly everybody hates it because we're comparing it to Steve Austin VS The Rock.

The Iron Man match was terrible.

Orton tapped with like 3 seconds left, it made him look really pathetic.

I really don't see this feud being over. I think we have just seen the beginning. Looking at the end of Raw last night, Orton will more than likely blame Cena, and Wade, and some how get Cena re instated and at TLC. They'll probably have a Triple Threat Match for the number 1 contendership. This could make a Cena Heel Turn. I think he hinted that also at last nights Raw. When he was getting the crowd to chant Cena Sucks..

Those are just my thoughts. 1st Post :)..

1up, that's a really great point. I hope that that's how it goes down (though, obviously, I'd prefer if Cena stayed out for a while).

i think the shit can still happen at WrestleMania. I think that it should boil down to a No-DQ, ony pin or submission, no one...and i mean NO ONE on the "WWE Roster" (get to that in a second) can get involved in that match or the person they helped not only loses, but they lose their jobs, PERIOD.

I say WWE Roster because SOMEONE is going to get involved in the match. And it should be to help Cena so he can turn heel. I'm sorry, but you don't turn your biggest star heel on some lame ass PPV that nobody is going to buy. This has to be Hulk Hogan/nWo, Austin/McMahon BIG. So why not have it at WM.

Now the ? is who is going to help Cena. I think a looooong shot, but won't happen, should be The Rock...THAT would be a swerve out of the ass since they are "beefing". Or i was thinking HHH, have a two-man Power Team, nWo-ish type of faction maybe. Idk, i just think they shouldn't go away from it.

By the way, Face v. Face is what i think should be the ordeal going in.

I think the feud last year was one of the best ever, it was fantastic and I don't think it was totally resolved, so of course Mainia is a good spot to have another. However, I'd personally want them to hold off even longer as I'd like to see Miz/Cena at Wrestlemania and Orton take on Triple H or Sheamus.

Definitely don't want to see HHH/Orton unless HHH is the dick we've come to know and love.

Miz/Cena would be OK..but we know who's gonna win.

I feel like their feud was a bit underwhelming. I think that has more to do with the lack of depth the story was given more so than being compared to Rock and Austin.

I always felt that they should have saved that feud for Mania season, which is when the writers tend to try a little harder. But alas...

I don't know how you would restart another feud with those two at the moment. If anything, the fans are more sympathetic towards Cena and his current situation, which would make a heel turn rather difficult. When he comes back, he's going to have just as much, if not more support than he did before. Orton just turned face, so you would basically have to abort that and have him turn on Cena.

I would wait for atleast another year before trying to reboot another program for these two.

You know the Hogan/nWo turn happened at Bash at the Beach, right? Not exactly a Starrcade.

Anyway, Cena/Orton was OK. It wasn't as good as Cena/Edge, and maybe not even as good as Orton/Undertaker, but it produced some slightly entertaining moments. The matches were happening too often, though. If I remember correctly, I think they wrestled on like 4 straight PPVs. I know that's only like two and a half months in today's WWE, but that's just (as I said before, apparently) overkill.

Also, it was painfully obvious that Cena would be getting the 'last laugh', so it wasn't that enticing.

ALSO, I actually DID like the Iron Man match right up until the last three seconds when Randy tapped. The pyro station spot was just absolutely hilarious to me. Straight out of a Wile E. Coyote cartoon.
