I love Kurt Angle, but it's the fucking Macho King. Nobody rocked the king shit like The Macho Man.

Steve Austin

I loved Brock Lesnar too, but his King of the Ring was just another stepping stone in what seemed to be a flood of accolades for a very young competitor. It was like they were desperate to get him over. It worked. It did. But I don't think he really needed it.

I'll never forget that promo from Austin with his busted lip after beating Jake Roberts. Wrestling history right there.

Bret Hart

I'll be voting him to the finals no matter what.

Ken Shamrock

He didn't really do dick with his KOTR win, but neither did Ted...at least I don't think he did. I never saw it. I at least remember Shamrock winning, so there you have it. If this were 'Better Wrestler', I'd vote DiBiase.

Tazz Dan

That can be argued to being good timing. Wrestling was just becoming cool again and that one line helped Austin into super stardom. When Bret won wrestling wasn't popular, but his push helped keep the company successful during that time.

Not that I'm trying to tarnish Austins win at all, but it was two completely different times in wrestling eras.

QUARTER FINALS

Match 1: Triple Threat
HHH (1997)
Randy Savage (1987)
Kurt Angle (2000)

A very close match-up here in which all three could have progressed if a single vote had gone in a different direction. Kurt Angle progresses with 7 against Randy Savage's 6 and HHH's 5.

Match 2
Steve Austin (1996)
Brock Lesnar (2002)

Stone Cold pretty much walked this round with a 14 - 4 win over former UFC Champ.

Match 3
Bret Hart (1991 & 1993)
Edge (2001)

Both of these men took a clean sweep in the First Round but it's 'The Excellence of Execution' that progresses with 15 votes to Edge's 3.

Match 4
Ted DiBiase (1988)

Not an attack against anyone's votes, but how many of you actually remember Ted DiBiase being King of The Ring? And please tell me what his reign did to make it better than Shamrock or Harts. Again, this is just a general question not a flame.

But, it is down to the individual's criteria.

If they wanna base it on who they like better overall then so be it. Doesn't have to be based on what they did as King.

Not really, though. All he really did in that tournament was defeat an over the hill Jake Roberts. Austin would have been a star with or without that tournament.

12-01-2010, 04:21 PM
Yes he would have, but it's hard to know how important that promo was. It's certainly legendary, and WWE tries to tell us it catapaulted him.
Perhaps it's what made them take real notice. Or perhaps the fan response to the catchphrase played a huge part.

Anybody Thrilla
12-01-2010, 05:07 PM
A lot of that response probably had to do with the fact that he said "ass", which was pretty rare at that point in time. I remember that's why I started thinking Austin was cool. That and his theme music.

I am not 100% sure about that. If he didn't win, you don't know if he would have ever made that promo. I think it had more significance because it was at the KOTR PPV. If it were on Raw, it might get lost in the shuffle.

XL
12-02-2010, 07:01 PM
The speech was a result of facing and defeating Jake Roberts who was working a "Bible Bashing" gimmick I believe. So, without the victory over Jake and the platform to cut the promo it may well have never happened.

I said he would have become a star without the tournament. I didn't say he would have cut the exact same promo, you dickheads.
