View Full Version : Car Tuning

Do any of you know of a game with really deep car building/tuning? I had this IHRA drag racing game for the PC years ago where you could change everything about a car right down to the engine bore and stroke. I loved that part of the game, but the racing aspect was awful. The difficulty of the game determined how fast your opponents car went more so than the class/type of car. A stock street car could outrun a Top Fuel car easily on the easiest difficulty, and if your car had too much power the car would pop up in the air and flip on it's top as soon as you put it in gear.

I had another one called Gearhead Garage where you just took the car apart piece by piece and upgraded everything and customized it. Something like this is what I really want, but this game was pretty limited in parts you could use as upgrades and even car models themselves until a little online community developed for it after I had quit playing. Plus it was extremely unstable it would crash and corrupt your game at any time without warning fairly regularly.

I could probably dig those games out right now, but I doubt they would run on XP or 7. I don't care if it's PC or Xbox, but I want to be able to change more than the typical camber and gear changes.

I think Forza lets you do all that stuff.

Really? I tried it out for the racing, but never really looked at the tuning part. I just figured it was close to GT4 in that it had a lot of suspension tuning but no real building.

Forza was OK in the tuning department, IMO.

It felt like you could use the same general settings for every car in the same class (FF, FR, MR, AWD, RR) and it'd give you the same result.

It's a little deeper than GT4, but not by much.

I've heard GT5 lets you tune the shit out of your cars, but I haven't played it yet. Of course that's on PS3 so, I don't know.

Didn't that Juiced game let you do all kinds of shit to your cars? Or was it all cosmetic shit in that one?

Cosmetic, I'm sure of it.

Yeah, those are beyond what Forza offers. Forza is a great game, though.

I'm gonna try those ones you found, though.

Yeah I loved Forza up until I got all the achievements in 3 and burned myself out on it for the longest time.

Bah, I can't run Car Mechanic Simulator. Needs a beefier setup than what I have. :(

Same here, didn't think a game like this would be so system intensive. I mean my laptop is only like 3 years old and it is so, so slow. Took me a couple minutes just to get to the options menu and then back out.

I had to build a new computer to play most of the other games I have on Steam, and other programs I have anyway so I guess I'll just hold off on it until I can get that built. Maybe Automation will be done by then too.

You would think that there'd be an options menu so you can tweak the settings, but there isn't. From the videos, the level of detail and what you can do is probably best suited for the best specs.

Makes sense. I finally got into options but it was such a pain I never checked them to see what was under video or graphics it was just taking so long to even register a mouse movement, so I just quit.
