Syfy has canceled Stargate Universe, according to Deadline Hollywood. The remaining ten episodes of the show’s second season will be aired in the spring, with no more to follow. This apparently marks the end of the Stargate franchise, at least as far as series are concerned. The first series ran ten seasons; Stargate Atlantis was canceled after five seasons.

A Stargate Atlantis-Stargate Universe crossover movie was greenlit last summer (see “SGA-SGU Crossover”). At one point a Stargate movie, Stargate: Extinction was also planned.

Asshole cocksuckers. Couldn't they wait until the season was done before making a decision? The writers said the story was planned for 5 seasons but if they knew they had to end it early they could wrap it up in one season but seeing as the rest of the season is already in production or finished and there is no third season we'll be left with another series without a clear end.

Christ.

Yeah, it tried too hard to be BSG, without the characters, stories, and actors to back it up. But still, it was starting to develop.

I swear I'm gonna start my own TV Network that picks up good series that are canceled too early like TSCC and SGA/SGU.

Didn't they cancel SGA in the first place in order to make way for SGU, because SGU was sold to the network as being a more expensive show and so on?

If the network was not going to commit, then they should have just kept SGA, instead of finishing atlantis off in a rather unsatisfying way and trying to create another show which they would abandon so easily.

I only heard of Stargate about a year ago, but apparently it's been around for about fifteen years. Sounds like a plothole in this universe to me.

Makes more room on the schedule for replays of the Shaktopus movie.

No.

SGU was the answer to not having to pay large sums for the known actors of prior shows.

Was anyone watching it?

I like sci-fi typically, but this didn't interest me. Normally I'm all in on most things. I wonder if I'm alone or if I fit the general consensus.

I watched it for a season. It just wasn't Stargate. or good. They didn't even write the characters from other shows consistently. I stopped caring. I think a lot of Gate fans did.

I wasn't into it at first but at least it's something Sci-Fi and SG related so I kept watching. The second season is better and it seems like it will get better as time goes on. The real mission of Destiny being revealed and the introduction of more unknown alien races made it much more exciting.

I really wanted to found out more about this "message/signal" behind the cosmic radiation that Rush discovered looking through Destiny's data banks.

I think a lot of SG fans didn't like/watch SGU mainly for the same reason which is that it's unlike the other Stargate series and I think that has actually contributed to the demise of SGU. SGU is not SGA or SG-1 so they shit on SGU and complain about it because of that and also because they don't have any other SG series to watch. The writers themselves said that doing this wouldn't bring back SGA.

Oh. I didn't know that. Well now I wish I had watched the show that bored and annoyed me more often! I might as well watch bad programming if it won't bring another show back....

:p

I was referring to SG fans being hard on SGU because it was not like SG. They think criticizing SGU constantly would bring back SGA but that won't happen. This plays a part in the untimely demise of SGU.

You can watch it and think it's bad and say it is and stop watching it but is it really productive to constantly shit and criticize it because its much different from regular SG series? Especially if you consider yourself SG fans? I was like these people but I kept watching. I had complaints too and I didn't like certain characters or certain things. I couldn't get into SG Atlantis at first and wondered why they made another SG but now I can say SGA is the best SG series in my opinion.

Its like everyone is a professional critic now. The majority of TV series and movies can't be perfect and you can't cater to everyone so why not just sit back, turn off your inner critic for a while and just enjoy the damn thing. If you truly don't like it then state your opinion and then go watch something else. It's like some people have vendettas against some movies and series for some silly reason. Everyone complains too much about everything.

But it's devoid of all the characteristics that made Stargate Stargate. It's just a subpar space drama with a ring prop. Why would fans feel any special imperative to not tear this a new one? And why should people just enjoy bad stuff?

For that matter, isn't it hypocritical to complain about the fans and complain that everyone complains too much? Especially for someone who's reading more like "why must people complain about something I like?"

The trend on this and other sites I frequent tends to be as such: I tried to like it, but I stopped watching it after (X episodes). A lot of people gave this thing a legitimate chance, and shit on it because they were actively watching it and cared about the Stargate franchise. I'm not sure any of that's a bad thing, because it seems that those people shitting on it were the ones that were watching it. The ones the show couldn't keep because it was awful.

Personally, I'm glad a bad show is off the air. If they do another Stargate, they might actually try to make Stargate. Sorry that you feel the need to complain so hard about these illusory detractors, but meh.

How much of people not liking something is more because of personal preference than of any substantial reasons, especially in SGU's case? The big reason they don't like it is because it's unlike other SG series. That doesn't mean it's necessarily bad. And I'm not complaining because I like the show, I also talk about people complaining about movies and tv shows in general whether I like those movies/tv shows or not. The legitimate chance you mention seems to be only a few episodes and not an entire season or so, unlike you.

SG fans turning on SG might actually be a bad thing because if they want to spice up any future SG series and add new things they will look at SGU as a precedent and be afraid to push the boundaries of SG. Sure the old things that made Stargate, Stargate worked but how long until we will want something more than just the regular old SG formula? How many times can we use the same formula and just add fresh faces and change the scenery? How many more times can there be a Lt. Colonel in charge with a genius type member, an alien who kicks ass and the sensitive, more in tune with cultures and different people type?

With SG-1 actually being canceled after so long without a proper send off, the show that probably put Syfy on the map, SGA being canceled after 5 seasons also without a proper send off and now SGU being canned after 2 seasons, what if Syfy will take a break from any new SG series and focus on cheaper alternatives like Warehouse 13, Eureka and Sanctuary?

In its second season, SGU has declined in viewership ratings.[78] This decline has been attributed to its change in timeslot (from Friday night to Tuesday night) and by what series co-creator, Brad Wright, claims: "I don’t think if we for any reason go away, it is an issue necessarily of the quality of the product that we’ve been making. I think getting moved on the schedule has hurt us. And the fact that some of the fans that liked SG-1 and Atlantis were so angry that they have deliberately hurt us, which is unfortunate".

The two episodes that stand out the most from season 2 are episode 8 Malice and 9 Visitation. Malice features the actor who played the main villain in Heroes season 4. Episode 5 Cloverdale is also interesting because the majority of that episode is from Scott's view via dream-like state which re-imagines everyone on Earth with Young as his father, Chloe as his fiancee and others playing different parts.

They should have kept Caprica, I'm still sore over that.

They are supposed to be developing another Battlestar Galactica spin-off, set in the first cylon war.
