View Full Version : Has Chris Benoit been mentioned AT ALL on ANY wrestling show?

Xero

Since it came out that all that shit happened with Benoit (let's say late 07 to present) has his name come up at all during any wrestling event? I'm not counting shoot interviews here, but angles and commentary.

Everything including indy wrestling, TNA, ROH, etc.

I do believe they have mentioned him in WWE before but nothing more than "_____ beat Chris Benoit at __________". I might have been hearing things, but I swear I've head him mentioned like once or twice.

Xero

That had to have come from Striker if it did happen.

I dont think they have, but they should.

Its like the whole "Pete Rose not being in the Hall of Fame" issue. People want him in the Hall, but not to have an induction speech and all that. Have his recognition, but still let it be known that you can't get away with your crimes.

Thats how it should be with Benoit, at least by his name. They should be able to say "Orton won his first WWE Title by beating Chris Benoit at Summerslam in 2004". Nothing more, nothing less.

MAYBE I recall in a HOF ceremony someone mentioned "Chris" or "Benoit", maybe on the internet broadcast or TV broadcast, but I can't say for certain...but for some reason it popped into my head.

Yeah, let's compare gambling to murdering your children and wife. STFU Idiot.

glanville6
12-18-2010, 02:35 PM
Thats not the point, Idiot. The point is that you don't ignore the past. You don't give Benoit credit, but you don't necessarily need to pretend like he never existed.

Mention Benoit on TV if its needed, like when you talk about Royal Rumble Winners or whatever. There aren't a ton of things that need to have his name mentioned as it is. Just acknowledge that he won a rumble or won the title, and thats it. When needed.

I wasn't comparing Rose to Benoit, dummy. I was comparing a situation where they have both been banned.

Not sure if it counts, but wasnt he in the Elimination chamber dvd, just everything praising him dubbed out.

Really? Did they add anything about him like "You know, I never really liked Chris Benoit."

Ric Flair mentioned him in his speech when he got inducted into the Hall of Fame. But that's about it I think.

Guess there were more (possible) instances than I thought.

I watched a Raw the other day when Shawn Michaels was on commentary for a Triple H match in late 2008 and called a move 'the Crippler Crossface', then a few moments later said 'sorry....the crossface'. Shows you how much detail has gone into erasing the references.

glanville6
12-18-2010, 07:38 PM
I just want to clarify to everyone that I was NOT comparing Pete Rose to Chris Benoit. I was just using a name that everyone would probably know as someone else who was banned.

You can ban whoever you want for whatever you want, but it doesn't mean that accomplishments should be forgotten.

Lets face it, no one is going to forget that Benoit is a child and wife murdering prick, but none of us are going to forget that he won a Rumble and won the Title at Mania 20... so trying to erase it from WWE is one thing, but if they erase it from their company, it won't erase it from our memories.

I didn't mean to offend anyone if I did. I was not comparing 2 human beings, I was comparing punishments.

Are you sure it wasn't a tongue-in-cheek reference that DX usually makes.

DX is probably the only two people on the planet vince wouldn't fire for making a joke like that. Even if it's subtle.
Them and Taker, probably.

Not a TV reference, but Benoit was in the WWE encyclopedia
From wiki:
Even Chris Benoit has a profile in the encyclopedia, even though WWE has tried to distance itself from him since his double murder and suicide.[1]

I've been looking for a video of this ever since but can't find one. Any ideas?

Kinda interested to see the reaction.

Benoit was in that Smackdown 10th Anniversary DVD or something with the TLC 3 match, but they simply referred to Benoit/Jericho as 'the tag team champions' without mentioning his name. And if I recall the footage of him was only limited to one or two key shots.

Im surprised that whenever they had to show him they wouldnt just blur him out.

Has anyone bought Wrestlemania 20 direct from WWE.com recently?

I wanna know how much stuff got edited out of the main event, when Benoit won. Wonder if they've kept in the stuff where his family is in the ring, and him and Eddie are hugging.

Xero
12-19-2010, 10:22 AM
They don't edit Benoit out of full shows. They just don't include him on the packaging at all, including the match listing. But the matches are intact. I got a few of the US Tagged Classics and they had modified boxes but Benoit was in them.

They actually were editing Benoit out of airings on 24/7 at first, but they stopped that.

Kind of an unrelated question to open up the topic a bit, but in the same sense, do you guys think that if Michael Jackson had been found guilty of child molestation, etc, that his legacy would also have been removed from American society? Would his videos and DVDs and his history be erased, or would VH1 simply paint him as this dark character for the sake of making good entertainment?

Nope, and before I get called a racist or something, I'm just stating the way it was.

Like OJ, a large portion of the black community would not believe, despite evidence and all that stuff, that OJ was not guilty.

Same for Michael Jackson.

So I think that VH1 would cater to Michael Jackson's fans when he died even if he was convicted.

Xero
12-19-2010, 12:47 PM
Not even the black community, but Michael Jackson fans in general. Doesn't matter if they're black or white.

Some people look at Benoit and either separate his work from what he did or make up ridiculous theories so that he's not so horrible in their mind. Michael Jackson fans would have been even more insane and ridiculous about it, more because of his amount of fans versus Benoit than anything else.

Xero

Things would have been a lot different had Benoit actually lived. Not saying WWE would have anything to do with him, but I guarantee that some scumbag would have gone into prison for a shoot interview with him. Because even if Benoit was tried and sentenced to death, that could have taken 5-10 years.

glanville6
12-19-2010, 01:02 PM
True.

And as far as VH1 and a lot of other channels, such as E! Violence and Crime sells.

For example, E! Has done their "Most Horrific Hollywood Murders" which included Benoit.

And "Dateline NBC to Catch a Predator." Proving that Child Molestation is not funny, but a show about it is.

And I was watching a stream of an old WWE RAW where Bischoff was putting on HLA and said "Sex and Violence sell." And his book was called "Controversy Creates Cash." All of that is true.

Such as ratings. If WWE did a 2 hour show about what happened, people would watch it. If he lived like Xero said and someone went to prison to do a shoot with him, it would have been so controversial everyone would want to see it and would be talking about it for weeks, if not months.

Just put on the rise and fall of ECW dvd, all the ads before it heavily feature Benoit. His dvd, Eddies and the DOR game. Have they ever shown the Guerrero documentary on 24/7 or the like? Don't think i've ever actually watched it but just from the trailer it seems like Benoits in it alot.

Besides, his promos all sucked and he killed his family.

I know many promotions in Japan and Europe mentioned Chris by either his real name, Pegasus Kid, or Wild Pegasus.

Hell, NJPW's Youtube channel showed some of his matches under their "Greatest Moments."

Pretty sure I remember an interview with Vince in the last year or so where he said he was willing to back off on the complete striking of Benoit from the record books, but that they would only reference him where it promoted WWE as a whole, and was not just a "Benoit reference".
