View Full Version : Did they drop the ball with Austin vs. Undertaker at Summerslam 1998?

I heard the crowd wasn't into this match at all because they opted to go with the whole "mutual respect" angle here

I wasn't into wrestling at the time, and it seems like this match could've been WrestleMania-caliber.

Was this a face vs. face encounter? Was Taker in his prime around this time?

THOUGHTS

Don't feel like doing any research. I be pumping out the threads like clockwork

I remember loving the PPV as a whole as it was one of the first that I have seen.....maybe my first. I thought it went well since it broke Taker off from Vince and let him start the ministry.

wasn't really face vs face but it was a weird build up cause they had austin and taker as the tag champs like a week prior.

No way! This is easily the best Summerslam main event ever, they did not drop the ball at all. The build up was perfect, highway to hell Taker vs Austin.

I think the only problem with the match was it fallowed Rock/HHH's Ladder Match, which was fantastic. Nothing bad about Austin/Taker, I just feel like the audience was drained from the previous bout (that launched both HHH and Rocky as legit threats to the Main Event by the way).

This. I loved the build and the PPV though. A classic to me.

I liked the feud, especially the finish in the Breakdown and Judgement Day PPVs after Summerslam.

Great PPV, great theme song and great nudity on the promo videos. Some random chick was naked in the video and it wasn't blurred.

I actually just watched the VHS of this week. They didnt drop the ball at all. It was a steady build that fell victim to following a solid undercard, and not to forget it followed HHH/ Rock in a ladder match, which was a great match that proved Rocky/Hunter could play in the main event. The crowd was hot as hell for that match, and like stated the crowd was dead by the time the main event came around due to it.

Interesting note: Stone Cold gets legitimately knocked out like 1-2 minutes into the match when he ducks down for a back drop, Taker kicks him in the chin and his head snaps upward into Taker's chin. To this day, Austin barely remembers anything about the match and when viewing it, can't really place anything that's happening. For this reason, it's one of his least favorite main event matches, esp. against Undertaker.

I enjoyed the main event. plus The Rock/HHH was epic and again the most underrated Rock/HHH match IMO.

It was face vs. face

Undertaker was in their prime (33 years old)

It's a great progression from their earlier matches together in WCCW/USWA Dallas like this...
